Work Text:

Zayne’s birthday had necessitated a lot of prep, but it was now finally ready. Everything had went well, including the cake reveal and the play in the snow. It was the second birthday you two spent together, but the first one as a real couple. The first one where you could say ‘I love you’ with a smile, and be answered with the same softness.
The first one where your lips were less cold, because Zayne could prevent it. Even if he still let cold sneak near you, so you would lean against him for warmth.

You two were on the poarch of doctor Noah’s house, sitting while you drank a hot chocolate - you had forbidden Zayne to drink any cup of coffee here. Talking quietly, joking, exchanging kisses. Zayne had never felt more at peace than here, surrounded by people who loved and estimated him. Well it was only two, but it was already good enough, right ? Zayne did not needed more.

“Zayne, look at the little birds here… They seem to be cold.”
“They are used to the weather here.”
“No one is perfectly used to the snow.”
“I am.”
“You are not. You only like the snow when I am here against you,” you smiled, looking up at him.

He smiled, looking away but without denying.

“I have an idea. We could buy them a kind of… Big nest. So they could rest from the snow if they want it !” You chirped joyously, getting on your feet.
“Of course. Let’s try to find some wood.” He said calmly, picking up your cup so it would not fall down the snow.

In the dark of the night, you took his hand to wander in the forest near the house, using your power to resonate with him, making a dim light to walk in the snow.
You picked some wood, while Zayne took on logs, that he brought back inside.

“All that ?” You asked, suspicious.
“It might as well be big enough to really protect them from snow.” He said, taking off your coat so it could dry in the entryway.
“I do not think we have the same ambitions, Doctor Zayne.”
“Why ? Didn’t you wanted to build something for them ?”
“Urgh, yes, but… Something small ! You always make it extra. But it’s good for them,” you said softly, sitting down to get to it.

Your little nest was ready in a few minutes, assembling the sticks to each other.

“Here. It will keep the birds warm in this cold winter nights.” You said proudly, showing it to Zayne.
“That’s good, honey. I am proud of you.” He said gently, looking up from his work.

He was carving the log, making an entrance for little birds to seek relief from the cold. And, like everything the surgeon made, it was… Good. Near perfect.

“Hum. You could… Make more columns maybe ? And a balcony ?”

Zayne traced the first lines of it under your content smile.

“It’s too dark, we are not seeing anything. We should go to sleep and keep that work for tomorrow.” He concluded, letting the knife on the table.
“Yes. It will be beautiful !”

A few days later, the sun was shining on the snow when you left doctor Noah to go back in town. But this time, a small house, carved in a log, was placed in the forest, with a well furnished nest inside.
Maybe next year, it would held more memories of you two.
