Work Text:
Jackie is really, really appreciative of DiJonai.
Her girlfriend (she still can't believe she can say that) took the time to travel from Minnesota to Miami while on an injured foot just because Jackie asked her to. Now, Jackie gets to spend her day off with her lover. They've been snuggled up in bed since lunch ended, DiJonai tucked securely into Jackie's side.
"I kinda want cookies." DiJonai thinks aloud. Jackie looks up from her phone, turning to look at her.
"I can Doordash some." Jackie suggests, but DiJonai shakes her head and pouts.
"I want 'em fresh. And you know those cookies always be sweet as hell." DiJonai explains. She sighs, staring down at the boot on her foot. "Wish I could make some…"
"I can help." Jackie volunteers. She would sooner die than not help DiJonai get her way. If DiJonai wants fresh cookies, Jackie will do whatever it takes to get her fresh cookies.
"Seriously?" DiJonai raises an eyebrow, but she's already smiling hopefully. Jackie can't say no now, even if she wants to—which, she doesn't. How could she, when DiJonai looks so soft and pretty?
"Sure. I mean, I don't have flour or anything, so we'll have to Doordash that, but we can make cookies. You wanna pick a recipe?" Jackie is already on Doordash, finding the nearest grocery store.
DiJonai shakes her head. "I have a recipe already. Gimme your phone." Jackie hands it over wordlessly, watching as DiJonai finds everything she needs. Jackie chimes in occasionally—she has some of the stuff DiJonai wants to get. (Some is a stretch. Really, it's just the butter and eggs.)
Less than an hour later, the stuff arrives. Jackie helps DiJonai up onto crutches (her apartment is too small for the scooter) then carefully follows behind her so she can catch DiJonai if she stumbles. DiJonai is terrifyingly reckless on crutches, cruising across the floors as she takes steps that would make her doctors panic.
"I don't think you should be taking such big steps…" Jackie sounds genuinely distressed, a little horrified by how carelessly DiJonai is swinging on the crutches.
"If you really think about it, I'm taking two steps at once. It's fine, right?" DiJonai replies airily. She stops right in front of the marble island in Jackie's kitchen, pushing herself up onto the bar stool. Jackie holds her waist to stabilise her, and DiJonai repays her with a soft smile and dainty kiss to the nose.
Jackie smiles back, so wide the corners of her eyes crinkle and her cheekbones move higher. She quickly shakes her head, neutralising her expression to go take the Doordash stuff. When she comes back in, DiJonai is shaking with silent laughter, covering her mouth as she tries to restrain herself.
"What?" Jackie prods, frowning. She stares at the paper bag that she hugs in her arms, then back up at DiJonai. She slides the bag onto the counter top slowly, still confused by DiJonai's sudden laugh attack.
"You really just stopped smiling to go pick up groceries." DiJonai reaches out to grab Jackie the moment she's close enough to do so, and she pulls Jackie right between her legs, locking her in place with her knees. Jackie instinctively slides her hands under DiJonai's camisole (Jackie is pretty sure she either has the same one or Nai just stole hers) and onto her waist.
"Smile is only for you. Duh. Can't have anyone else seeing me cheesing like a motherfucker." Jackie leans in, puckering up her lips and letting DiJonai close the distance. DiJonai giggles, but obliges and gives Jackie her kiss.
"Do we really need to make cookies? I think I'm happier here." Jackie mumbles, wrapping her arms all the way around until she's hugging DiJonai with her head on Nai's chest.
"I want cookies, Jack. Please?" DiJonai is surely some kind of siren, softening her words as she leans back to look into Jackie's eyes. She's hypnotising—her smell, her face, really, just her as a whole. Jackie never stood a chance.
"Fine." Jackie relents. She gestures at the bag on the counter. "You unpack that, I'll go take the eggs and butter out."
DiJonai pulls things out of the paper bag one by one, then moves her hands off when Jackie is back by her side. Her girlfriend wordlessly picks up where she left off, taking out the remaining items.
"Right then. You gonna tell me the recipe, or am I supposed to read your mind?" Jackie clears her throat, staring at DiJonai expectantly.
DiJonai starts rattling off instructions, and Jackie is happy to follow. She grabs a bowl, heats up the butter, combines the dry ingredients with the wet. Before long, the cookies are in the oven, and DiJonai never lifted a finger.
DiJonai gets up after Jackie puts the cookies in the oven, which sends her girlfriend panicking and dashing around to the other side of the kitchen island.
"You need to not to that, please. I like not having heart attacks." Jackie can't stop finding herself holding DiJonai by the waist, but DiJonai just laughs.
"Relax, pretty girl. I still have one working leg." DiJonai is smooth, too smooth. Jackie finds herself sitting in the chair where DiJonai had been sat just moments ago, only now DiJonai is planted on her lap instead.
"You know I'll still need to get up to actually take the cookies out, right?" Jackie questions. She's not exactly complaining—DiJonai's so warm under her hands, so pretty on her lap.
"And you'll get up when the timer goes off." DiJonai replies. Her torso is perpendicular to Jackie's, legs draped over Jackie's lap. Her torso has always been longer, and from on top of her, DiJonai looks down on Jackie. She leans down slightly to kiss her nose. "Right?" DiJonai asks, but Jackie knows it's rhetorical.
"I will." Jackie agrees.
True enough, when the oven starts screaming at them to take the cookies out, Jackie picks DiJonai up, stands up, and puts her back down. DiJonai murmurs a soft thank you, takes Jackie's hand and kisses the back of her hand tenderly. Jackie doesn't even have time to finish blushing, because the oven is crying out to her.
"Now we wait for 'em to cool down." Jackie places the tray down on the cooling racks she'd set out earlier, then returns her attention to DiJonai.
"Looks really good, baby. You did a good job with 'em." DiJonai praises. She revels in Jackie's shyness, a side of Jackie she hardly sees when they're alone.
"Thank you." Jackie mumbles. She decides the easiest course of action is burying her face in DiJonai's neck, which works remarkably well in her favour.
When the cookies are cooled down enough to be held without getting burnt, Jackie puts half onto a plate and the couple relocate to the sofa. She shuts the blinds so the glaring afternoon sun won't intrude, then gives DiJonai the remote and lets her pick a movie. She turns the AC on, places the plateful of cookies on the coffee table, and disappears into the bedroom.
When she emerges minutes later, it's with blanket and pillows galore. While taking the items, she ran out of hands to hold, so she opted to drape it over her head. Her view is partially obscured by the fuzzy white blanket, and the sight is so comedic DiJonai lets out a loud laugh and takes a picture.
Jackie deposits all the pillows by throwing them at DiJonai, then sits next to DiJonai and covers their laps with the blanket. She reaches forward and takes the plate of cookies to rest atop her lap, taking one for herself right after. When she looks at DiJonai, the knowing look is enough to make Jackie's heart flutter. She darts her eyes away with a giggle, and DiJonai laughs at her too.
"C'mon, start the movie." Jackie nudges DiJonai, who rolls her eyes.
"Please, you're the one who waltzed in here and started throwing pillows at me."
"You're the one who laughed at me!" Jackie retorts.
"It was funny, so I laughed. Simple as that." DiJonai sticks her tongue out. Jackie just shakes her head.
"Talking 'bout funny." She mutters to herself. "Just start the movie."
DiJonai is happy to oblige, and as the opening credits roll, she takes another cookie and feeds a bite to Jackie, giggling when the crumbs stick to Jackie's lips. She leans forward and kisses Jackie—a gentle peck—and removes the crumbs in the process. She pulls back with a proud smile, and Jackie responds with an amused one.
Wordlessly, Jackie tugs at DiJonai's hand and sandwiches it between her own. She redirects her attention to the movie—5 minutes and and she's already lost—and she can't fight the smile that takes over her face when DiJonai's head rests on her shoulder.
