When Toji Fushiguro first met you, he couldn’t believe that you were a jujutsu sorcerer. Much less a defected one.
You, someone who radiates sunshine and rainbows basically everywhere you go, a jujutsu sorcerer? An occupation so dark and gruelling, people literally go insane because of?
It was hard to believe, considering you would scold him for killing a butterfly, go out of your way to buy extra food for the civilians sleeping on the streets at night, hold his arm so tightly in every public space, and talk to your named plushies before you sleep.
You, who never snapped at him for his anger or financial issues. You, who would rather jump in front of a moving bus before ever raising your voice at anyone.
So as Toji stared at the scene before him, he was so sure that your body had been hijacked by a curse.
In front of him, you stood, stance powerful as your hand reached to wipe the blood of your lips. Eyes staring down at a cowering man who was on his knees below you, eye black and bruised, ripped shirt covered in blood, his gaze basically begging for an ounce of mercy.
Earlier that day, Toji had received a call from Shiu.
A simple job apparently, to capture and intimidate some curse user who’s been terrorizing a client for far longer than they liked. The pay was decent, the instructions were simple enough; get him rough and alive, and Toji had no reason to refuse either.
He left your shared apartment early in the morning with a kiss on your forehead, still half asleep, expecting a quick job and returning to find your delicious home made cooking. What he didn’t expect was for the curse user to be an utter nuisance. Dragging the job out from an hour to three.
Toji had barely finished wiping the blood off his knuckles when the man laughed from the ground.
“So this is what you’ve been reduced to?” He started, eyes wide with annoyance and humiliation, “A tool taking orders for whoever waves the most amount of cash? This is the great Toji Fushiguro?”
Great, a loudmouth too.
“Money’s money.” Toji replied simply, barely sparing a glance at the man before him, who continued to laugh crazily.
If he wasn’t under the job contract, the bastard would have his mouth separated from his face already, maybe even his whole head.
“Come on!” The user continued, “Kill me! I know you want to!”
He surely does, and maybe will in the future once he’s free from the job. But now, he has better things to do than put up with this bullshit, like going home.
“Come on!” The man continued, “Can’t finish me off because of a stupid contract?? Or has your little girlfriend softened you already huh?”
Toji froze at the mention of you, head slightly turning back towards the crumpled man, who grinned at the reaction.
“What’s the matter? Struck a nerve?” He laughed loudly, “Word gets around you know! The infamous sorcerer killer, playing house with someone who’d cry if someone stepped on a flower."
The bastard’s lucky that the contract specifically told him to just rough him up a bit, or else he’d have experienced something worse than what satan could ever throw at him.
Nonetheless, Toji gritted his teeth as he left the alleyway, walking towards your shared apartment.
Toji was someone who had faced multiple degrading comments all his life.
From his clan, who would rather he die at a pit of curses due to his lack of cursed energy. From sorcerers who’d frame him as a devil. From stuck up clients and CEO’s who regarded him as a mere pawn to order around.
He learned to ignore it all, to move forward and spare no more than a second on any comment he would receive.
But you, you were something completely different.
You’d never looked at him with difference, even though you possessed the very thing he used to dream for as a child. Even though you knew of his financial situation and occupation. Even though you knew of his reputation, gaining first hand insight from your past colleagues who’d gossip hard and long about him.
The disappointment of the Zenin Clan.
Yet, you stayed.
Even as you faced social ostracization from the Jujutsu Society for siding with a low monkey like him, you stayed by his side. Providing him with warm meals after every job, comfort and relief during hard nights, affirmations and kindness even at his roughness. He soon found that you were the sole reason he kept on moving forward in this cursed world.
In the endless winter of his life, you were the one to provide sunlight.
Which is why he couldn’t understand the scene that unfolded before him. He had returned to the apartment to find it empty, and after searching half of Tokyo, he found you, and received a pleasant surprise as well.
Because here, the person standing in front of him now, the one with blood on their knuckles and a look he’d never seen directed at another living being before, seemed nothing like the one he kissed goodbye in the morning.
“Say it again,” you demanded, bringing your boot down to make contact with his already bruised shoulder, eliciting a loud groan.
“I don’t know– what you’re talking about!” The man screamed as you stepped on his bleeding leg.
You let out an irritated clicking noise at that (a sound Toji hardly believed could be produced by you) before grabbing the man by the collar.
“Wrong answer,” you started, eyes wide and manic, “What you said about my boyfriend, say it again.”
You gotta be fucking kidding him.
Toji’s hand reached the hem of his shirt, raising it slightly to find a small hieroglyphic sign tattooed on the left side of his abdomen.
The eye of horus, your cursed technique. No wonder you found out about the encounter so quickly. You were eavesdropping on his whole mission the entire time.
Toji stifled a laugh at your action, how possessive, cute.
“You forget,” you said, pulling Toji out of his internal thoughts, “My boyfriend's a professional, he would never kill you because of his job.”
The man you had on a chokehold suddenly realized the implication as he started clawing his nails at your arm.
“But me,” you continued, lips twitching upwards, “I’m unemployed.”
Toji felt like he just discovered something new about himself as he watched you completely obliterate the man before you.
You finished with a simple punch, cracking your neck idly as the unconscious man fell to the ground.
Toji was pulled out of his trance as you stretched your head his way, finally noticing his presence.
“Oh, baby you’re here!” You exclaimed, walking towards him enthusiastically, hands curling around his arm as you started blabbering about your day and where you want to eat, as if the scene he saw before was nothing but a daily occurrence.
Yeah he was buying a ring tomorrow.
