Work Text:

Just a few days. It was just a few days that's all.

David should have learned care less a long while ago. But alas, he did not, emo bitch. Now he has to face the consequences of having feelings (oh nooo)

Standing on the beach between Michael and the boys, David was watching Michael warily. He really wasn't 100% okay with the idea of Michael going back to Arizona.

"I told you I'll be back in three days, don't worry." Michael had told David.

But David did worry, a lot. More than he should anyway. Michael wasn't going to be gone forever, it's not permanent.

Jesus Christ David, get yourself together. It's a stupid road trip.

And yet, he couldn't not worry.

Curse David and his stupid attachment to Michael.

"I'm not worrying." David snapped, feigning indifference.

Michael saw through his act. He looked at him unimpressed. "Uh huh." He came over and held David's face in his palms. "I know you, David."

David glared, but didn't bother to pull away. "No you don't."

"Yes I do." Michael smiled, pulling David close.

David's eyes narrowed the slightest bit, he tilted his head into Michael's hand. "Sure."

"Yeah, sure." Michael joked. "But seriously, you know I'll be back."

Liar. David thought. He scoffed. "I know that. I'm not stupid."

"If you insist." Michael kissed his cheek, making David scowl. "But I know you're lying." He teased.

Michael let him go, turning to the others. "I'll miss you guys." He said solemnly.

"It's three days Mikey, not an eternity." Marko said.

"Does David know that?" Paul asked.

David made an angry noise, stepping towards him defensively. "What did you say?"

"That three days is an eternity without Michael." Dwyane supplied.

Michael snickered.

"Shut up." David crossed his arms, turning back to Michael. Not that long. Chill out. Three days. Just three days.

"Sun's up soon, I have to go. Gotta pack." Michael said. He put his hands in his pockets, absentmindedly kicking sand. "Big day I guess."

David frowned. "I don't like the fact that you're going back to Arizona, Michael."

"It's to get some paperwork my mom forgot when we left. I'll be fine."

"Your dad."

"I'll be fine, David." Michael repeated. "I probably won't even see him."

"Don't do anything irrational." Dwayne said.

Michael rolled his eyes. "I won't, honestly."

"Just in case"

"Yeah yeah. I know." Michael eyed the horizon. "I still have to go."

They bid goodbye to each other and Michael walked back to his bike. David trailed behind him, staying silent.

"Do you need something?" Michael asked when they got to the parking lot.

David got closer to Michael, pulling him in my the belt loops. "Are you sure you should be going back there?"

Michael tilted his head and looked at David. "Hey, I'll be okay." He said softly.

David frowned, looking at Michael. "I know." It was said much more softly than intended.

"Getting soft, Davey?" Michael teased.

"No."

"Sorry for assuming you had an ounce of emotion in your body." Michael said, playing with David's hair.

"Shut up." David said, putting his head in Michael's neck. He let out a sigh, inching closer.

"David, what-"

"Stay."

"Stay?" Michael asked. "Aw David are you gonna miss me?"

David opted to stay silent, tucking his face into Michael's neck and letting out a breath.

"Hey... hey, you know I'll be back in the blink of an eye." Michael reminded. "I can call you whenever I can if it'll help, okay?"

David nodded, still refusing to move from his position. Michael wrapped his arms around David, giving him a gentle squeeze. "I should be heading home, gotta leave early." He said again. Michael pulled back from him, much to David's disappointment. He made a small noise, looking up angrily at Michael. "Fine. But I'm coming with you."

"As I said before, it's almost morning. You'll get burned." Michael said, exasperated.

David tilted his head, giving him a tight smile. "Mmm don't care. Lets go." He climbed onto Michael's bike, patting the space behind him. "Hurry up."

"Wh-what? That's my bike! You sit in the back." Michael protested, crossing his arms.

"No." David started the bike, looking at Michael smugly, challenging him. "As you said, we don't have much time. Let's go."

Michael huffed, climbing on the bike behind David. He had no clue where the others had gone off to, probably the cave.

They peeled out of the lot, Michael gripping David's waist. It took a while to get to his house, but quicker than normal due to the... speeding. Jesus David obey the laws of traffic! Michael mentally scolded, holding on tighter as David sped up. "Slow down! Holy Jesus! I'm gonna fall!" Michael yelled over the roar of the engine.

"You're not gonna fall, you big wuss! We're in a hurry, so I'm hurrying. See? Helpful."

"It won't be helpful to anyone else if I fall off and die!"

David looked back at him, smirking. "If you're that worried hold tighter." He winked, facing the road again.

His house came into view, much to Michael's relief. David parked the bike, getting off and offering a hand to Micheal. "C'mon."

After he took a moment to catch his breath, Michael graciously took his hand, smiling. "Such a gentleman. Taking me home and walking me inside, how kind." He gave David a light kiss, pulling him along as he walked to the door.

"And you didn't die after all. So there was really nothing to worry about, bright eyes."

Michael hummed, looking back at David once before facing the house.

Lucy was standing at the door when Michael reached the porch, her arms crossed. "Hey honey, you had a nice night I hope?" She asked sternly.

"Hey mom," Micheal said guilty. "I didn't mean to be home so late. Time got away from me I guess."

"I'm just kidding Michael, it's fine. Now come inside and go to sleep. We have to get up early." She went back into the house after one final look between Michael and David. "Say goodnight to your boyfriend and hurry up!"

"Not my-"

David slapped a hand over Michael mouth, snickering. "Yes I am!"

Michael looked at David and smiled, giving a kiss to his palm. "I should get going."

"I'll see you soon, bright eyes." He bid Michael adieu, watching him as he closed the door before leaving and getting his bike he left behind at the boardwalk. Three days. Just three days.

--------

He couldn't do this.

Three days without Michael was hell, David hated it.

Yes, he had talked to Michael every day he was away but David was restless. And yes, he knew today was the day Michael was coming back, that he was happy for.

David had been dealing with non-stop teasing for the entirety of the three days.

The had others picked up on his mood the first few hours Michael was gone, constantly teasing him about it.

David sat on the couch, rubbing his temples as Marko and Paul chanted Michael's name, mocking him.

"Michael, Michael, Michael. You miss him so much, don't you." Paul teased.

"Shut up." David grit out.

Marko snickered. "Technically not a nooo."

"Be quiet."

"Party pooper." Marko grumbled, flopping onto the couch with an unnecessary amount of gusto.

Star's hand landed lightly on David's knee, she looked at him kindly, silently questioning how he felt.

"I'm fine." David growled. He looked at Star, curling into himself.

She stayed quiet, nodding.

David stood, pushing Star lightly off him. He walked away, going down the hall to his room.

Closing the door behind him, David leaned against it, letting out a sigh.

Michael could you get back any faster? Goddamn. David complained internally.

Okay drama queen. Came Paul's voice in his head.

Impatient much? Marko teased.

Dwayne just laughed. Isn't he coming back today? Just be patient.

I left the room for a reason! Goddamn cursed mental link...

Laying on his bed dramatically, David groaned.

A few hours. Not that long. Not that long at all.
