Work Text:

The closet had been fine before.

Well, “fine” was an understatement. It was optimal. Balanced. A masterpiece of spatial discipline.

Tim Bradford had built that closet system with the kind of focus most people only used on filing their tax returns. Shirts arranged by category. Then by color. Then by sleeve length. Hangers evenly spaced, exactly 24 hangers on each rack, no more, no less. Shoes aligned with the front edge of the shelf, not a single piece of dirt on any of them. There had been breathing room between garments.

What some like to call, perfect harmony.

Now it just looks like a department store exploded.

Lucy is sitting cross-legged in the middle of all of it, surrounded by an avalanche of fabric: sweaters stacked in rainbows, dresses draped over the boxes that still had the last of Lucy’s items from her old apartment, tall boots tipped over on their sides like fallen dominoes. There’s even a scarf hanging from the light fixture. Tim has no idea how that happened.

He stands in the doorway, hands on his hips, staring at the wreck.

Lucy looks up at him with a perfectly innocent expression. “Welcome to phase one of Operation Chen Closet Integration”

“There are phases…?” he asks carefully.

“Of course! Chaos. Reflection. Growth.”

“This is not growth.”

She grins and tosses the cardigan she’s holding at his chest. He catches it automatically.

“You knew I had clothes,” she says. “I warned you about it.”

“You said “a few boxes.””

“I meant emotionally.”

He exhales through his nose and steps into the battlefield, clearly already stressed out.

“Okayyy,” he says, slipping into command mode because that’s what he always does when he feels overwhelmed. “We make three piles. Keep. Donate. Maybe.”

Lucy points a finger at him. “There is no “maybe” pile.”

“There is absolutely a “maybe” pile!”

“Tim.”

“Lucy.”

She narrows her eyes, then smiles slowly in defeat. “Fine. But the maybe pile has to get reviewed at least twice.”

“Agreed.”

Lucy picks up a bright patterned blouse from the pile and holds it up. “Okay. Interrogation time. When have you ever seen me wear this?”

Tim studies it. “Literally never.”

“Correct.” She tosses it dramatically to the side, starting the donate pile. “See? We’re making progress already!”

He nods. “We are.”

They settle into a rhythm. Lucy pulls things out. Tim folds. She debates the sentimental value. He evaluates it practically.

Every so often he adjusts a pile so it’s squared.

Every so often she intentionally nudges it crooked just to watch him twitch.

“You’re doing that on purpose,” he says, narrowing his eyes at her.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.” She sticks her tongue out.

He straightens the stack again.

A few minutes later she pulls something from the back corner, tangled between two of her winter coats.

The green floral dress.

They both go still.

Lucy’s expression shifts first, from playful to soft, like she just opened a time capsule.

“Wow,” she murmurs. “I forgot this was back here.”

Tim doesn’t say anything right away. He just looks at it.

The memory hits him with clarity. The restaurant’s dim lights. The way she stepped out of her car confidently, pretending she hadn’t practiced that entrance in the mirror. The way the green had caught the evening light. The way he had to remind himself to breathe like a normal human being.

“That’s the one,” he says quietly.

“Our first date,” she confirms.

“You were late.”

“I was *five* *minutes* late.”

“More like fifteen.”

She smiles, eyes warm. “I needed time to get all dolled up! I wanted to make an entrance.”

“Well you definitely did make one.”

Lucy stands up and holds the dress against her body, smoothing it down her torso. “Still iconic?”

Tim gets up with her steps closer. “Yeah,” he says.

“Yeah?” she presses.

“Yeah.” He reaches out, feeling the fabric between his fingers, the material softer than he remembers it being. “You looked…” He clears his throat. “You looked incredible.”

Lucy beams, victorious, blushing, and a little emotional, all at the same time. “Wow. Full sentence. I’m documenting this.”

“Don’t.”

“Too late. It’s in my brain forever.”

He doesn’t pull his hand away immediately.

“Keep it,” he says firmly.

She folds it carefully - not tossed, not crumpled - and places it at the very top of the keep pile delicately.

They stand there for a second longer than necessary.

Then Lucy breaks it by sitting down in front of the pile (now a bit smaller, thanks to Tim’s system!), pulling out a tank top that’s aggressively neon and bedazzled.

Tim physically recoils. “Absolutely not.”

“It was a phase!”

“More like a warning sign.”

She laughs so hard she falls sideways into a pile of jeans, her hair spilling everywhere. “You are *such* a control freak.”

“Am not.”

Lucy looks at him with a fake disappointment in her eyes. “You alphabetized your *spice rack*.”

“It’s called efficiency.”

“You also reorganized my shoes while I was at work.”

“Come on, they were suffering.”

She crawls closer on her knees, cheek resting on his shoulder, eyes sparkling with mischief. “You love this though. Admit it.”

He looks around at the mess. The mountain of clothes, evidence of their shared life, spilling across the floor. Her laughter. The fact that her stuff is here at all.

“…maybe,” he admits.

Her teasing softens. “I know you like things neat and that you’ve got stuff organzied a certain way. I’ll try not to completely destroy your system.”

He tucks a strand of hair behind her ear. “It’s not just my system anymore.”

The words hang there for a moment.

Their closet. Their space. Their *home.*

Lucy’s smile turns quieter, deeper. She turns to look at him straight on. “You sure?”

He nods once. “Of course.”

She leans forward and kisses him, soft and quick but grounding.

They get back to work, but something has shifted. The mood is lighter, reminiscient.

Lucy digs deeper into a box and pulls out an old undercover outfit. Brown pants and medium wash denim jacket. *Nova Lin.*

Tim arches a brow. “That one we’re keeping.”

She laughs. “You don’t get veto power over my wardrobe.”

“I absolutely do when it looks like that.”

She throws the brown pants she’s holding at his face. He catches it without looking, smiling back because he just loves seeing her laugh.

They build momentum. The donate pile grows. The keep pile stabilizes. And the maybe pile gets suspiciously large…

At one point Lucy disappears into the hallway and comes back with a brand new label maker machine.

Tim freezes. “Is that…”

“Yes.”

“Is it fully charged?”

“Very.”

His expression betrays him instantly.

She grins. “I knew you’d like it.”

He tries to play it cool. “It’s… definitely practical.”

“Mhmm.”

They spend the next fifteen minutes labeling shelves. Off-Duty; Undercover; Fancy Outfits; Memories. Tim lines the labels perfectly straight. Lucy deliberately sticks one for “Jeans” slightly crooked. He silently fixes it when he thinks she’s not looking. She notices anyway.

Eventually, the chaos has been tackled. The hardwood floors can be seen once again. That scarf is removed from the light fixture, with some help from Tim’s height.

Tim takes a step back, surveying their work.

It’s definitely not as symmetrical as it was before. But it’s warm. Full. Lived-in.

She leans against his shoulder, wrapping herself around his bicep. “You survived.”

“Barely.”

She nudges him. “You know you love me.”

He doesn’t hesitate. “Yeah,” he says easily. “I do.”

She smiles, eyes flicking toward the green dress neatly hanging at the far end of the rack.

The closet door slides shut with a soft click.

He thinks to himself, *the chaos isn’t just chaos now, it’s Lucy shaped.*

It’s still organized. Just… differently.

And somehow, it still feels exactly right to Tim.
