Work Text:

The air in their home feels different tonight, like every inch of the space has been holding its breath for a while now, but can finally exhale.

The TV glows and flickers softly across the living room, some random cooking competition playing that neither Tim nor Lucy is actually paying attention to. An empty pizza box clutters the coffee table alongside two almost-finished glasses of red wine and a couple of greasy plates that both of them are too lazy to get and wash.

Lucy is curled into Tim’s side on the couch, socked feet tucked beneath her legs, one arm looped loosely around him. Tim’s stretched out across the cushions beside her, one hand resting absentmindedly on her thigh, thumb moving in slow lazy circles through the fabric of her jeans.

Outside, somewhere out in the street, a car horn honks before fading back into the general noise of Los Angeles at night.

But mostly, it’s just them.

And about every thirty seconds, without fail, Lucy looks down at her ring again.

Tim, of course, notices every single time.

She tilts her hand toward the lit lamp beside the couch, watching the diamond catch the light.

Then again.

Then one more time.

Eventually, Tim huffs out a quiet laugh across the top of her head. “You know it’s not gonna disappear, right?”

Lucy doesn’t even look guilty to be caught in the act. “I’m aware.”

“Are you though?”

“Yes.”

Another pause.

She angles her hand again.

Tim smiles despite himself, finding the small action overwhelmingly adorable. “You’re obsessed,” he pointedly tells her.

Lucy finally glances up at him. “Can you blame me?”

“No,” he admits easily.

Because, honestly? He gets it.

Even now it still doesn’t fully feel real.

The proposal.

The ring.

The fact that Lucy had looked at him with tears in her eyes and excitedly said yes *three times* just barely before he’d fully finished getting all his words out.

His fiancée.

The word still catches him off guard every time he thinks it.

Lucy settles even deeper into his side again, if that was even possible, still staring at the ring.

“It’s so perfect,” she says quietly, almost like she’s talking to herself.

Tim’s fingers tighten slightly against her leg, remembering the history behind it. The very history that helped him realize that ring was *the one.*

“There’s actually something I never told you about it.”

That gets Lucy’s attention immediately. She lifts her head from his shoulder, brows knitting together the slightest bit. “About the ring?”

Tim nods once. “The jeweler told me a story when I was buying it.”

Lucy shifts a little so she’s facing him more fully now, back straightening up against the cushions of the sofa, interest already brightening across her face.

“What story?”

Tim’s expression softens slightly, placing his hand under hers, gaze dropping briefly toward the ring before lifting back to her eyes.

“About the couple who owned it before us.”

Lucy stills. “Oh. Wow.”

He leans back slightly into the couch cushions.

“He said the ring originally belonged to this couple who’d been friends for years before they got together,” Tim says. “Like… a really long time.”

Lucy’s expression shifts almost immediately, the gears in her mind already turning a million miles a minute.Because already, it sounds familiar.

Tim observes the realization settling behind her eyes and continues.

“They met when they were young. Stayed in each other’s lives through basically everything, with all the ups and downs of life. Apparently everyone around them knew they were in love before they finally figured it out themselves.”

Lucy lets out a quiet breath that she didn’t even realize she had been holding. Tim’s thumb brushes unconsciously over the back of her hand as he keeps talking.

“And then eventually they got together.” He pauses slightly. “Got married. And *stayed* married for over fifty years till they peacefully passed away together.”

The room goes still.

Lucy just stares at him for a second.

Then down at the ring again.

Then back at him.

“You’re serious?” she asks breathlessly.

Tim nods once.

Lucy looks down at the ring again like it suddenly means something entirely new now.

Her voice softens almost immediately.

“That’s… literally us.”

Tim smiles slightly. “Yeah.”

Lucy’s eyes shine a little in the low lamp light now.

“Friends first,” she murmurs quietly.

Tim raises an eyebrow. “You mean enemies first.”

She gasps dramatically. “We were *never* enemies.”

“You literally called me a pain in your ass, like a week into me being your TO!”

“Well, yeah, you deserved it.”

“I absolutely did not.”

“Whatever you say, sarge,” Lucy laughs softly, leaning fully against him again.

But her fingers keep turning the ring slowly around her hand, like she’s trying to feel the vast history behind just a tiny piece of jewelry.

*Fifty years.*

The thought settles warm and heavy somewhere deep in her chest. Eventually she tilts her head back slightly to look at him again.

“For what it’s worth, you picked the perfect ring.”

Tim’s expression softens in the way it only ever really does around her, when they’re alone in the safety of their own home.

“You said yes before you even looked at it.”

Lucy smiles immediately. “Because I was distracted.”

“By what?”

“You.”

Tim rolls his eyes a little, but his hand slides tighter against her waist, pulling her closer anyway.

The TV drones on in the background, but neither of them notices.

Lucy settles comfortably against him again, her cheek pressed against his chest now.

For a while neither of them says anything. The silence is the kind that only exists between people who know each other so well that they don’t need to constantly talk to fill the space.

Tim’s fingers drift absentmindedly through the ends of Lucy’s hair. And Lucy traces lazy circles against his stomach through his thin cotton t-shirt.

And then, casually, Lucy blurts something out.

“Lucy Bradford sounds fake.”

Tim snorts immediately. She lifts her head slightly, looking slightly exasperated now.

“No- seriously,” she says. “It sounds the pretentious nerd who would remind the teacher they forgot to collect the homework from last night.”

Tim nods solemnly. “That’s because she definitely would.”

Lucy gasps dramatically and smacks his chest. “Hey! Rude!!”

“You started it.”

She narrows her eyes slightly before relaxing back against him again.

“Lucy Bradford-Chen sounds kinda nice though.”

Tim feels her shift slightly against him, somehow suddenly more aware of herself.

The teasing fades from her expression little by little, and his thumb strokes slowly along her side, grounding her.

“You thinking about it already?” he asks quietly.

Lucy exhales softly. “A little.”

Tim nods once.

Like, of course she is. Because Lucy thinks about everything.

She stays quiet for a few seconds more before speaking again.

“I think professionally, I’ll always stay Lucy Chen,” she admits.

Tim doesn’t even hesitate. “Okay.”

Lucy blinks slightly, like she expected more opposition than that. “You don’t care?”

Tim looks at her, genuinely confused. “Why would I care?”

Lucy shrugs slightly against him. “I don’t know. Some people get weird about this kind of stuff.”

Tim’s brows pull together in doubt. “You’ve been Lucy Chen a lot longer than you’ve been engaged to me.”

Something in Lucy’s expression softens instantly at that.

“It’s your career. Your reputation. Your name. You’ve built it all yourself.”

Lucy’s fingers tighten slightly against his shirt. The thing is, she hadn’t realized until just now how emotional the conversation would actually make her.

Because logically, it’s just paperwork. But emotionally? It feels bigger than that somehow.

Like standing at the edge of something permanent.

Lucy stares down at her ring quietly. “I want to keep honoring my culture and heritage,” she says softly after a second of thought. “But I also dive in all the way, do this all fully with you.”

Tim’s gaze doesn’t leave her face.

And immediately, immediately, he understands what she’s actually trying to say.

Not *‘which last name should I pick?’*

But *‘how do I become your wife without losing myself?’*

Tim’s hand slides up gently along her back. “Then don’t lose it.”

Lucy’s breath catches slightly.

Tim says it so simply, so easily, like to him there’s never even been a question.

“You shouldn’t have to give up part of yourself just because you’re marrying me.”

The room goes quiet again.

Lucy feels something warm ache throughout her body.

*God, this man.*

She shifts slightly, pushing herself up enough so she can actually look at him properly now.

“What if I hyphenated legally?” she asks quietly. “But I still stayed Chen at work?”

Tim doesn’t even consider it, immediately agreeing. “Okay.”

Lucy laughs softly. “You’re suspiciously easygoing about this.”

Tim shrugs slightly. “Why wouldn’t I be?”

She smiles immediately. “Wow. Growth.”

“Don’t push it.”

Lucy grins. She then falls silent for a moment.

“Lucy Bradford-Chen.”

Tim repeats it automatically.

“Lucy Bradford-Chen.”

Something about hearing him say it out loud makes Lucy’s stomach flip unexpectedly.

It suddenly sounds real. Very, very real.

Like wedding invitations and mortgage paperwork and registering their kids for kindergarten and future family Christmas cards.

Like forever.

Tim watches her expression carefully. “You okay there?”

Lucy laughs softly, slightly overwhelmed. “Yeah,” she says. “Yeah. It just sounds…” she trails off, not knowing the words to express her thoughts.

“Married?”

She points at him immediately. “Exactly.”

Tim smiles a little. The room settles warm around them again.

And then he goes quiet.

Lucy notices immediately.

Years of knowing him have made her hyperaware of his different types silences, and what they mean.

This one feels thoughtful.

She tilts her head slightly. “What’s going on that mind of yours?”

Tim hesitates- which immediately makes Lucy suspicious.

“What?” she repeats.

Tim scratches lightly at the back of his neck. “I was kinda thinking maybe I’d hyphenate too.”

Complete silence.

Lucy just stares at him.

Actually stares, like a deer caught in headlight.

“…What?”

Tim shifts slightly beneath her gaze now, looking oddly self-conscious.

“I mean…” He shrugs once. “It only seems fair.”

Lucy continues staring at him like her brain has completely stopped functioning.

“Tim.”

“What?”

“You are *not* just casually dropping that.”

A small smile tugs at the corner of his mouth despite himself. “Why not?”

“Because you just said you’d hyphenate your last name.”

Tim looks genuinely confused by her level of shock. “Okay, and?”

Lucy sits up even more, scooting back away from him a bit, turning toward him completely.

“You’re serious?”

“Yeah.”

“You.”

“Yes, Lucy.”

“Timothy Bradford.”

“That is currently my name, yes.”

Lucy’s mouth actually falls open slightly.

Because this is Tim.

Tim Bradford.

The man who alphabetized his spice rack.

The man who used to think being emotionally vulnerable was basically a crime.

And he’s sitting here casually offering to become Tim Bradford-Chen like it’s no. big. deal.

Lucy feels embarrassingly emotional about it almost immediately. “You’d *really* do that?”

Tim’s expression softens a little at the look on her face. “Why should you be the only one having to change your name?”

And there it is. That’s the thing that completely breaks her.

Lucy lets out a helpless little laugh that sounds dangerously close to her trying to choke back tears.

“Oh my god.”

Tim’s brows knit together. “Why are you reacting like I proposed again?”

“I mean, you kind of did!”

He laughs quietly as Lucy closes their distance and climbs fully into his lap, hands coming up to cup both sides of his face.

“You’re literally insane, Tim.”

His hands settle automatically on her waist. “You seemed into it five seconds ago.”

“I am *very much* into it. Trust me.”

She stares at him for another second before leaning down and kissing him hard. Tim kisses her back instantly, melting into the connection, one hand sliding under her shirt and up her spine.

When they finally pull apart she stays close, forehead resting against his.

“You’re really okay with that?” she asks more quietly this time.

“More than okay.”

Lucy pulls back and searches his face carefully, like she’s trying to figure out if he’s just saying what she wants to hear.

But he means it completely.

And somehow that makes her even more emotional, tears brimming her eyes and threatening to spill over.

“You crying over paperwork right now?” Tim asks softly.

Lucy immediately smacks his shoulder. “Shut the hell up.”

Tim laughs quietly in response, pressing a kiss against her temple.

The warmth in the living room feels almost unbearable now, like happiness inflating too much and and sitting too big inside both of them.

Lucy stays curled against him for a while after that, her head tucked beneath his chin again while Tim’s hand lazily caresses up and down her back.

The TV is still playing, and at some point the cooking competition switches out for a home renovation show.

Neither of them notices that either.

Lucy’s almost drifting off when suddenly her eyes open back up and she says, “Okay, don’t laugh, but.”

Tim immediately narrows his eyes. “That sentence never leads anywhere good.”

Lucy huffs softly into his chest before reaching for her phone off the cushion beside her.

Tim watches suspiciously as she unlocks it and opens her notes app.

Then hesitates, immediately suspicious of the circumstances.

“What are you hiding?”

“…nothing…?”

“That was definitely some guilty eye contact.”

Lucy glares at him briefly before biting her lip slightly.

Then she unlocks another hidden note with her face ID.

He catches the title, and he just can’t control himself. He immediately starts laughing.

She shoves his shoulder instantly, huffing in fake anger.

“Okay, to be clear-”

“Baby names???”

“TO BE CLEAR,” Lucy repeats louder to be heard over his laugh, “I started a baby name list way back in high school.”

Tim’s laughing harder now, and Lucy just points accusingly at him.

“That is totally normal!”

“I never said it wasn’t.”

“You implied it with your uncontrollable laughter!”

“Sorry, I just couldn’t help myself! A locked note of baby names you started in *high school*?!”

Lucy groans dramatically, covering part of her face with one hand in embarrassment.

Tim gently grabs her wrist, pulling it away so he can see her expression again.

Still smiling.

“So you’ve just been secretly naming hypothetical children for years now?”

Lucy sighs dramatically. “Fine. Yes.”

Tim grins. “This is literally the most Lucy thing I’ve ever heard.”

She narrows her eyes at him again, about to respond snarkily.

But then her expression softens slightly, and she whispers something so quietly, it’s like she was telling herself.

“It got a lot longer about three years ago though.”

Tim stills immediately. The joking disappears from his face almost instantly.

Three years ago.

Back when work partners turned into life partners.

Back when they started looking at each other differently.

Back when everything between them became dangerous and complicated and important.

Lucy suddenly looks weirdly shy now, like she maybe hadn’t meant to admit that out loud.

Tim’s chest aches softly. Because all he hears is ‘I started imagining a future with you before either of us was brave enough to say it.’

And, God. He loves her so damn much.

Lucy shifts slightly under his stare. “Okay, stop looking at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you’re about to swallow me whole.”

Tim smiles softly. “No promises.”

Lucy rolls her eyes slightly, though a soft smile is cracking her face, too.

Then she looks back down at her phone. “Okay,” she says, regaining some of her usual confidence now. “Help me judge these.”

Tim settles back more comfortably into the couch. “Alright. Ready”

Lucy scrolls to the top of the list.

“Ruby Bradford-Chen.”

Tim considers seriously.

“…I like it.”

Lucy blinks at him. “You answered that very fast.”

“The name called to me.”

“Interesting...”

She scrolls again. “Mason Bradford-Chen.”

Tim immediately shakes his head.

Lucy gasps dramatically. “Why? Mason’s *such* a cute name!”

“That kid would definitely get suspended for something stupid like making spit wads in the bathroom.”

Lucy stares at him for a second, in disbelief, but then considers again. “Wait, you’re kinda right.”

Tim looks unbearably pleased with himself.

Lucy keeps scrolling. “Ivy Bradford-Chen.”

Tim repeats it quietly under his breath.

“Ivy.”

Lucy watches him carefully now.

He’s actually imagining it. She can see it happening in real time behind his eyes.

And suddenly Lucy feels warm all over again.

Tim scrolls further down the list himself now.

His thumb pauses over another name.

“Beckett Bradford-Chen.”

Lucy smiles instantly. “Oh, that’s one of my favorites.”

Tim reads it again quietly, whispering it into the air.

Almost absently. Testing how it feels.

Like he’s trying to picture hearing it across soccer fields or crowded school auditoriums or a graduation stage someday.

Lucy’s heart squeezes painfully, because she knows what’s going on in his head.

Because suddenly this doesn’t feel hypothetical anymore.

Not after the ring and the hyphenating conversation and the way Tim said, “Why should you be the only one changing your name?”

Tim scrolls again slowly.

Lucy watches him instead of the phone now, gazing into his eyes.

Watching him imagine each name.

Imagine them.

The future.

*Their* future.

Eventually his thumb pauses again.

“Amber Bradford-Chen,” he reads quietly, almost in a breathless voice.

Lucy tilts her head slightly. “You like that one?”

Tim looks over at her. *Really* looks at her.

Completely gone for her.

“Yeah,” he says quietly.

Lucy smiles slightly in response.

Tim’s gaze drifts back toward the phone in his hand.

“Sounds like ours.”

Lucy feels her entire chest cave in a little, in the best possible way though.

Because suddenly she can see it too.

Not abstractly, not someday-maybe-possibly.

Clearly.

A future house with tall, gleaming windows and a white picket fence out in the yard.

With a large master bedroom, perfectly adorned with decor that Lucy fussed over for weeks.

With three more bedrooms; one for each of their kids to have their own.

With a foyer full of tiny shoes scattered by the door.

Bedtime stories where the kids are asleep by the third page of the book.

School plays and concerts.

Late-night family dinners with their favorite take-out.

A little girl with Lucy’s eyes and Tim’s sandy blond hair, running through the hallway.

Another boy, barely old enough to walk on his own, a perfect mix of their parents.

More children on the way.

This beautiful, beautiful future.

All theirs.

Lucy slides the phone out gently from his hands before curling fully into his chest again.

Tim wraps both arms around her automatically, holding her close.

Their house stays quiet around them. Warm and safe.

But most importantly, full.

Full of love, of support, of devotion, of longing.

And somewhere between discussing their hyphenated last names and their future children, neither of them can stop imagining now, the reality of it finally settles in completely.

After everything.

Every mistake.

Every ‘I’m sorry.’

Every almost.

Every promise.

Every year spent circling each other, reaching out but hesitating, before finally getting it right.

They made it here.

They did it.

Together.
