Work Text:

Loki tossed the small candle holder into the air one last time before setting down with more force than necessary.

He recognised the footsteps coming down towards the dungeon immediately. Odin. Finally coming to talk to him at last.

Time was becoming hard to tell stuck in this windowless place but Loki estimated about a week or so having passed since he had been sentenced to his stay down there.

When Odin finally descended the steps, he stopped in front of the magical walls surrounding Loki and... stood.

"Is there something you seek?", Loki asked without looking at him after the silence had stretched a little too long.

Odin didn't answer right away. He never did. He never did answer Loki's question. He'd never had. And when he had, he'd always answered in riddles that no one was able to decifer.

"I came here to speak to my son," Odin finally answered.

"Then you have come to the wrong place," Loki scoffed, picking the candle holder back up, resuming to toss it into the air.

"I believe so as well," Odin said, "Although it has not always been this way. I remember you calling me father for years and I remember you not objecting to being my son all your life."

"Because I did not know, that I was not your son!", Loki snapped, throwing the holder against the far wall. It shattered upon impact, leaving a dark mark on the else spotless white wall.

"Because I thought it better you did not. I recognise now that I have been wrong," Odin's voice didn't waver and for some reason that infuriated Loki more than it should have.

"Do you not think this is coming a little late?", Loki asked, still refusing eye contact.

"I do."

"Then what are you doing here?"

Loki was fed up with this conversation already. He did not want to have this talk right now. And he couldn't even leave if he wanted to.

"I came here to talk," Odin repeated.

"You have said that already and yet here we are," Loki said, doing his best to emphasise his eye roll verbally as well.

"Are we not talking?", Odin asked.

Loki groaned, feeling like a petulant child, "Are we?"

"You betrayed every vow you ever took when you attacked Midgard," Odin said unprompted.

Now we are getting somewhere, Loki thought, subtly straightening his back against the wall.

"Every single one. You were supposed to protect the nine realms, not bring them under your control."

"Your oaths poison those you want to protect," Loki spat out, "Did you not always promise to keep us safe? Did you not?"

"It was your own fault. Everything that happened after you fell from the Bifrost, was your fault," Odin countered, still keeping his voice furiously not furious.

"How can you say that?!", Loki shouted, springing from his seat and looking at Odin. He looked the part of an unbothered man that did not care about the conversation at all. It drove Loki crazy.

"Because that is the way it is," Odin simply answered, holding Loki's stare.

"You are at fault for everything that happened! Everything!", Loki insisted, fighting back the tears that threatened to spill at the thoughts of the last year and all the pain he'd endured at the hands of -

"If I may remind you, you are the one who let go, choosing to fall from the Bifrost," Odin said, condescension dripping from his every word.

"You are never going to understand," Loki realised, hands that were trembling in anger falling to his sides, "You never did."

Odin didn't react to it at all. Nothing.

"You are a failure of a father. Leave me to rot in this dungeon and never come back, do us both the favour," Loki said, turning away from the see-trough wall.

There was no answer from the other side. Only footsteps slowly ascending the steps.

Odin left. He just left.

Loki couldn't say he was surprised.
