"If this be victory, pray I never win another," the Doctor read, as Luna leant over his shoulder.
"I didn't take you as a Game of Thrones fan, Doc," she remarked, "I watched a couple episodes when it first came out. Got bored of all the politics,"
The Doctor scoffed, "oh, you'd probably already know that the show goes downhill,"
"Yeah, but it had a spinoff with dragons," Luna beamed, "the dragons are my favourite part. And the hot woman with blonde hair riding them, but mostly the dragons,"
The Doctor snorted, before returning to the book. Luna frowned.
"How're you feeling?"
"Awful," the Doctor said, bluntly, "honestly. Every waking moment I just think about what happened. I can still hear their screams,"
Luna hummed, and nestled into the Doctor. He'd removed his jacket and was just wearing his jumper - Luna joked that it made him look naked - but it had become his armour. He was allowing himself to be vulnerable for a brief moment, with one of the best people to be vulnerable with. The constant companion.
"…Why haven't you left yet?" He asked, suddenly.
Luna shrugged, "well, normally, whatever force decides I should be here decides when I leave. I don't really… decide to stay,"
"No, I mean…" The Doctor sighed, "I've done an awful thing, and you're still here. Chatting with me like nothing happened, treating me like I'm still…"
"The Doctor?" Luna finished, "well, you are. And you're still my best friend, so, there!"
She stuck her tongue out.
"In all seriousness," she continued, "I can't fix what happened to you,"
"What I did,"
"Yeah, 'cause you had no other choice," Luna finished, "you were backed into a corner. It was either destroy the whole planet or… Continue the endless war. Make things worse for everyone else, not just Gallifrey,"
The Doctor frowned. Luna patted his shoulder, awkwardly.
"When I activated the Moment…" He said, "I thought I saw… Someone… I don't know who that someone was. A girl,"
"Ah, you destroy your planet and the first thing on your mind is a girl," Luna smirked, "typical man,"
"Oi!"
"Oi yourself!"
The Doctor sighed, "they said the Moment had a conscience, I just didn't believe it was that true. She looked… Sad, almost disappointed in me,"
Luna frowned.
"Do you remember what she looked like?"
The Doctor weakly grinned.
"Ah, she was your type, blonde,"
Luna rolled her eyes, "of course, of course,"
"I don't remember much else about her," the Doctor continued, "it's like… She's there, and then gone,"
Luna frowned.
"Well… Destroying your home planet is stressful," she said, "makes sense for you to be missing a few memories,"
"Amnesia? Again? Really?" The Doctor joked, "I thought Lord Byron got enough of that,"
Luna laughed, leaning on the Doctor's shoulder. She hummed, soothing her friend. What he didn't know was that Gallifrey survived, locked in a time lock, by him and his two future selves. She felt terrible keeping it a secret from him, but she knew how important this trauma was to him and his future.
But that was a problem for later. For now, sitting in the Doctor's library, watching over his shoulder as he read Fire and Blood, Luna was doing her job as constant companion perfectly.
