Pumpkin Pie//Apple Cider

Summary:

Joy and Emma are hosting Joy's family and since this is the first time Emma is meeting them, she's determined to make a good impression by cooking a fabulous meal.

Work Text:

Emma points up ahead. "Look! There's the farm. Looks like you can pull in across the street." Joy carefully eases the car onto the grass parking lot and parks between some other cars. Emma takes the grocery list out. "Okay, one more time. We've got zucchini, broccoli, squash, potatoes, tomatoes, onion, corn—" her voice trails off as her eyes flick down the list.

Joy smirks at her. "I can't wait to see what you decide to make with half a farm."

Emma can feel her face grow hot, but studiously ignores it and hopes Joy can't tell. "We're hosting a lot of people! I want everything to be right. It's my first time meeting your family!"

Joy squeezes her quickly. "It's cute! I'm excited to see what you whip up." Emma's shoulders relax and she leans into her girlfriend.

The farm stand is bursting with lots of produce, as well as jams and baked goods. Emma starts carefully examining the produce she wants, placing the best ones in her bag. She knows exactly what she's looking for and she won't settle for anything less. Out of the corner of her eye she can see Joy wandering around, looking at some of the non-produce items they are selling. She turns her attention back to the corn in front of her, sifting through to find the best for the dinner party they are hosting for her girlfriend's parents and siblings. They are coming up from Philadelphia for Joy's birthday and Emma is cooking for them. They're hosting at her place because her roommates will be away anyway.

As she finishes filling her bag up with the ingredients for the feast she has planned, she can see Joy lingering by the baked goods so she goes over to join her.

"Whatcha looking at?" she asks.

Joy glances up at her. "I was just looking at the dessert options. You're already making everything else so I thought I would get something from here so you don't need to worry about that." She taps the glass in front of the pies. "I was thinking pumpkin pie maybe? It's my brother's favorite."

"That's a good idea," says Emma. "We can get another one too, maybe an apple pie?"

Joy nods. "Yeah and let's grab some cookies too. Not for the party, these are for me." Emma laughs and starts giving the order to the woman behind the counter. While Emma does that, Joy slips over to the fridge in the corner of the shop. She grabs a gallon of apple cider and brings it back over to Emma. "This will go perfectly with our cookies," she says, leaning in to give her girlfriend a kiss on the cheek.

"This too!" Emma tells the cashier.

"Youse guys are cute," the cashier says, watching them. "It's always nice when we get couples out here. Doing anything special?"

"My family's visiting," Joy replies with a smile, "so we're making them the best Pittsburgh has to offer."

"Well, have fun!"

Joy grabs the desserts and cider, while Emma hefts her bag of produce over her shoulder. Joy tilts her head towards the parking lot. "Let's get this all back to yours and then we can have some real fun!" she murmurs into Emma's ear. She waggles her eyebrows at Emma, who rolls her eyes in response.

"You've got a one track mind there, don't you?" she says affectionately.

"Please, like you don't. We've got plenty of time; my family isn't coming until tomorrow!"

Emma looks at her. "You're a horndog, you know that?"

Joy cackles. "Please, you and I both know the feeling is mutual. Come on, let's go!"

Laughing, Emma puts the bag in the backseat of the car, next to the carefully placed pies and climbs in. As they drive away, she glances back at the farm and smiles contentedly. She has the best life.
