The bedroom is pitch black, completely stripped of any normal lighting, save for a single, mesmerizing source of illumination: the warm, crackling, bright orange flame flickering steadily atop Waxwell’s head.
Waxwell sits cross-legged on the plush carpet, arms aggressively crossed over his wrap. In a twist of sleepover fashion that he would vehemently deny enjoying, he is now wearing a midnight-green dinosaur onesie. Opposite him sits Shelly, also wearing a red Dino onesie, lost entirely in her passionate recounting of prehistoric history.
🐚 "And people always underestimate the Tyrannosaurus rex because of its tiny little arms, Waxwell! But do you know how much force those jaws could exert? Up to twelve thousand pounds of pressure! That is enough to crush bone like gravel!"
🕯 "Fascinating. Truly. My dark, malevolent soul is trembling at the thought of ancient reptiles crunching on pebbles. Please, tell me more about lizards with calcium deficiencies for the four-hundredth time."
🐚 "They weren't lizards, they were theropod dinosaurs! And it's not a deficiency, it's apex predation perfection!" Shelly beams, her orange cheek blushes glowing warmly in the ambient orange light of his head flame.
🕯 "Silence, peasant! I did not grant permission for a paleontology lecture inside my chamber of eternal darkness. I invited you here so we could plot the downfall of Gardenview, not listen to a biology seminar about oversized chickens with teeth!"
🐚 "Sometimes... I feel like an old fossil left in the dirt, Waxwell..."
Waxwell freezes instantly, his arms uncrossing in a sudden, jerky motion as his tired eye bags widen in sheer panic.
🐚 "Like... like if I stopped talking, everyone in Gardenview would just walk right past and forget I'm even here. I'm just a background prop in everyone else's adventures."
Waxwell despises this feeling more than anything else in the world. He hates seeing her look "extinct," pushed aside by the hustle and bustle of the other Toons. Desperate to shatter her sadness and drive away the gloom before she sinks any further into despair, he snaps into a frantic, chaotic action plan. He decides that the only logical cure for existential dread is a theatrical, try-hard villainous tantrum.
🕯 "Silence, mortal! How dare you diminish the audience of the great Waxwell?!"
🕯 "If they ignore you, it is because they are blind fools who simply cannot handle our combined dark aura! You are terrifying! You have fangs on your hood! You wield the ancient power of extinction!"
🕯 "Behold my wrath! Tremble before my supreme malevolence!"
Waxwell snaps his fingers aggressively, channeling every ounce of his magical energy to make his flame flare twice as bright, casting long, dancing amber shadows across the bedroom wall. He immediately holds up his hands, twisting his fingers into a clumsy, shaky configuration, attempting to cast a giant dinosaur shadow puppet on the wallpaper.
🕯 "Behold! My dark minion, the... the long-neck one! It shall crush anyone who dares to ignore our supreme existence!"
Shelly watches the pathetic, wobbly shadow puppet dance across the wall, and the sheer absurdity of the terrifying, try-hard demon trying to cheer her up using finger shadows breaks right through her sorrow. She bursts into bright, ringing giggles, her heart melting instantly at his comically disastrous attempt to comfort her.
🐚 "You mean a Sauropod! Oh, Waxwell, teamwork really makes the dream work!"
🕯 "It was an intentional artistic interpretation! A terrifying beast of the deep abyss! Do not mock my dark arts, berry-shell!"
🐚 "Your dark arts are adorable, Waxwell. Thank you." Shelly smiles warmly, wiping a tiny tear of mirth from her eye as she adjusts her red dinosaur hood.
🕯 "Hmph. Whatever. Just go to sleep before I decide to set your fossil collection on fire."
As the deep hours of the night slowly wind down, the playful energy in the room settles into a peaceful, quiet calm. Both Toons wriggle out of their upright sitting positions and lie down side by side on their plush pillows, facing each other in the dim sanctuary of the bedroom.
The room is whisper-quiet, broken only by the gentle crackle of Waxwell’s flame, which has now dimmed down to a soft, sleepy, amber glow, casting long, comforting ripples of light across the ceiling.
🐚 "Thank you for listening to me, Waxwell. You're a really amazing Toon."
Waxwell’s eyes widen in absolute horror. Compliments—especially sincere, unprompted ones—are his absolute kryptonite. Before he can stammer out an edgy, biting retort about how he was merely plotting her demise, Shelly leans forward across the small gap between their pillows.
With practiced care to completely avoid the open fire flickering on top of his head, Shelly gently presses her lips against his cheek.
Waxwell freezes dead in his tracks. In less than a millisecond, his entire face turns a heavy blush. His meticulously crafted, overconfident, dark villain persona entirely crumbles into dust. His jaw goes slack, his eyes spiral slightly, and a tiny, undignified squeak escapes his mouth.
🕯 "T-That wasn't part of the scheme...!"
🐚 "Goodnight, evil overlord."
Waxwell sits there paralyzed for a few long seconds. Realizing he has completely lost this round, he lets out a flustered, defeated huff. With a dramatic sweep of his arms, he yaks his wrap all the way up over his face, completely burying himself to hide his massive, mortifying blush from the world.
Shelly softly chuckles into the darkness, listening to the muffled, grumbling complaints emanating from beneath the fabric. Slowly, the tension drains from Waxwell’s frame, his breathing evening out alongside hers. Surrounded by the cozy warmth of the bedroom, the flickering amber glow softens to a mere ember, and both of them finally drift off into a deep, peaceful sleep.
