Chapter 1: prologue

Chapter Text

The seal of the witch of envy.

A plane of existence beyond spacetime and the natural order of existence itself. Once a prison, now acting as a sanctuary for her beloved soul every time he loses his life in this cruel world. It was supposed to be a place only for them, a place that allowed them to share their joy, their fear, and their pain with one another, but in reality, it wasn't. Four centuries after she finally found her beloved's soul in a dimension completely lacking in all forms of magic, authorities and other supernatural powers their was this strange presence attached to him. A sort of intimacy that her soul craved for years, and here that thing was clinging to him like a parasite.

Envy: “Who are you? Why are you with him? I’ll kill you, die die die die die ”

Despite all her attempts, Envy's corruption was now too much for her to resist, as her mind was quickly being overrun by the thoughts of ripping and shredding that thing apart from his soul; there was no mercy, no desire to understand why and who that thing was. The only things left of her at this point were envy and jealousy.

Ripping through the spatial barrier separating the two universes came a shadowy hand, slowly moving towards its target in the dead of night. Other than a few cars traveling in the nearby area alongside him, there was no one to disturb her, as she would quickly destroy the parasite's core and bring her beloved to her and become one again. But as the hand moved closer towards him, Satella began to notice a strange connection between the two; it was a contract between them, and not just any contract, but something that combined both of their souls as one and, because of that, inflicting damage on one of them would automatically harm the other.

Satella: “You have been lucky this time, and if not for my beloved, I would have”

Envy: “ KILLED YOU, I WOULD HAVE SQUISHED YOU LIKE THE PARASITE YOU ARE.”

Satella: “It seems like it's time to bring him closer to me, but don't forget.”

Envy: “ONCE I FIND A WAY TO REMOVE YOU, I WILL TORTURE YOU FOR THE REST OF ETERNITY. I WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE A HELL.”

Satella: “ Till then, goodbye.”

Around 1 and a half years later:

Nightmares
Horrible nightmares have been hurting Betty’s contractor in silence every night, and she hated them. She hated him waking up at night, screaming and scratching his arm to cope with whatever horror that he refused to share with her.

Beatrice: “ Betty hates seeing you like this.”

She said with a small smile on her face while her eyes were on the brink of tears.

Beatrice: “ Betty also hates that you, the same person who pulled me out of that eternal prison and promised to cherish every waking moment we spend together, refuses to do the same with yourself "

Beatrice: “ But I suppose I was being a little harsh on you, wasn't I? Even a 400-year-old grandma like me, with all her knowledge and wisdom, was unable to overcome her pain until you came and decided to help me.”

Beatrice: “ But what is Betty supposed to do when she doesn't even know the thing that hurts Betty's Subaru every night, I suppose?”

Beatrice: “I just hope that you one day manage to overcome those hardships own your own i suppose.”

There was truly nothing she could do in that moment without having the basic understanding of what she was dealing with. All she knew for sure was that whatever horrific memories Subaru was dealing with were from before they had met each other in this world as he calls it. According to him, he in fact belongs to a completely different world than the one she knows, a land beyond the great waterfall as they call it.

Beatrice: “For these nightmares to end, you must stay strong, Subaru; you must not let those bad memories define who you are. You are a man who always fights, no matter how big or intimidating the situation is; you always face them head-on, and you must face your past the same way.”

Facing the past. Yes, that's exactly what Betty's Subaru needs right now to stop suffering every night alone. Similar to how that half-elf faced her past in the sanctuary, he must also face his, so we can finally make those happy memories he promised we would make in that burning library, without these scars and with these constant reminders of the past he should have left behind long ago.

Beatrice: “Betty remembers Mother once teaching her about the magic which can directly target the senses; I suppose it was the same kind of magic that she used in the sanctuary, just on a much higher scale.”

She quickly jumped from the bed and headed towards a bookshelf containing the last few surviving books from the old mansion that happened to be scattered around the mansion for emergency reading purposes. Pulling an orange book off the shelf, she went back toward her contractor, who was still on the bed, and sat beside him.

Beatrice: “If I remember correctly, this is supposed to be the book that talked about magic associated with illusion and memories, I suppose.”

Beatrice: “But in order for this to work properly, I must combine these two into a single spell, I suppose.”

Beatrice: “You better bring a lot of sweets for Betty, I suppose; if not, for you, Betty would have been sleeping right now, I suppose, but where I am working overtime just for your sake, I suppose."

Hours have passed since Beatrice first started working on the spell. At first, combining the two seemed almost impossible, but with dozens of failed attempts and retries, she was slowly getting closer and closer to completion until, suddenly, when she least expected it, the spell was finally ready.

Beatrice: “It's done i suppose; now you can finally be free i suppose.”

Beatrice: “The spell is now complete, and the only this thats left right now is for you to give your best, I suppose.”

She pressed her hand over his heart and cast the spell over him with a vibrant blue aura similar to the one in the sanctuary, starting to form around his body as the spell did its job and took effect.

Beatrice: “I suppose I should rest now, and you better pass the trial, I suppose. Betty worked the entire night for this, in fact, so you better show some results in the morning, I suppose.”

—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have died.

When I first came to this world, on my first day, I died to the bowel hunter.

A couple of days later, I died to Rem in the forest, all alone and helpless.

I was frozen alive when all I did was try to save everyone.

I was eaten alive when I refused to sacrifice and chose to save everyone.

I have died
I have died
I have died
I have died
I have died
I have died
I have died

But after each death, after each sacrifice, for some reason it didn't hurt; instead, the only thing I felt, the only emotion my brain was able to create, was love and grief. A sort of nostalgic feeling that you have always craved, but surprisingly, you have never actually experienced it for yourself in the first place. So why do I care if I have it or not? Why do I crave something that was never mine to begin with?

Unknown voice: “I love you”

The void has always remained empty, nothing but nonexistent, but within that void there has always been a presence, or perhaps multiple presences, who were always there for me, always watched over me, and always loved me no matter how pathetic or idiotic I was; they were always there.

But today was different; I felt a presence I had never felt before. It wasn't any different; in fact, the same nostalgic feeling that I always got from THEM was still present, but with some minor differences. It was personal way more than THEY have ever been, but instead of showing any sort of affection, it chose to stay silent. Not asking for my love, not asking for my attention, but just silence.

I heard you *^&^&, let's kill this thing already.

Subaru: “Who are you?”

Boy, you’ve got until tomorrow to put 700,000 together. You can beg for it, whore yourself out… I don’t care. Get it done. Otherwise, we chop you up and sell the bits

Subaru: “Do you also love me?”

You’ve gotta make my dream come true.

Subaru: “If you love somebody, you should tell them over and over again that you love them and not leave in darkness.”

I want you to show me your dream

Subaru: “ Just who are you, dammit? Tell me, do you love me or not?”

Pochita!
—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Subaru: “Pochita”

The silence of the morning at Anaros mansion shattered as Subaru lunged up into the air, screaming as the name came out of this mouth.

Subaru: “Just a dream, ha”. Subaru said as his breath slowed down and he realized that he was still indeed in his bedroom with Beako right beside him.

Subaru: “I sure cause a lot of trouble for you,” He said with a hint of empathy in his voice.
Subaru: “Hey, Beatrice, wake up! We overslept; Garfiel is probably outside already right now.” Said Subaru as he shook Beatrice, trying to wake her up.

Beatrice: “HaaaaOOO, let Betty sleep, I suppose. Betty stayed up late last night working on something important, I suppose.”

Subaru: “ All right, I will be outside with Garfiel; you can join us later on. Oh, and if you get late, don't skip your breakfast, ok; otherwise you end up tiny like Ram.”

Beatrice: “ Stop joking, I suppose, and let Betty rest.”

Subaru: “Alright, jeez, enjoy your rest; I will go and enjoy my morning tea with Meili,” Said Subaru as he grabbed his jacket and walked outside, wondering what Beatrice was doing at night that she didn't even have time to sleep.”

Subaru: “ I hope I didn't disturb her too much last night .”
