Chapter Text

It drifts.
It has been drifting for a while, It believes. Years, decades, centuries, millenia. It has no purpose, no will, nothing to make It whole, not anymore. Perhaps It used to, once, but that was long, long, long ago.
…
It is bored.
One of Its most miniscule tendrils grows nearer to a small planet, a speck of dust to the rest of It, but a planet nonetheless. The eye upon the tip of that near-microscopic tendril looks upon the planet, observing it.
It is a curious thing, It knows, and so It watches this planet. Unlike the vast majority of habitats in its system, this planet has life on it. Hundreds of thousands of little bodies and plants, prospering in their miniscule lives that hardly last a second to It. There are many lifeforms on this planet, but there is one in particular that catches Its interest.
They build tiny castles and huts that shelter them from the elements. They form communities and order each other around. They forge little metal sticks that they use to pierce each others’ chests and cut those tiny lives even shorter. They love, they hate, they birth, they kill. Fickle creatures; not that this is new to It, but intriguing nonetheless.
It does not know how much time passes as It watches this pebble, watches as its civilisations grow, prosper and die, but It knows that the length is at least an hour or so for It. It has simply been so long since something peaked Its interest; It is dying to have something to do.
It notices a small island, to the north of a larger stretch of land where It has seen a small god rise over the last thousand years. The land has the faint scent of sugar; a scent that It knows is a symbol of the Universe’s favour. Odd for a place so small to have such significance, but as It looks closer, It sees that the creatures on it have a desire to look beyond the ozone and into the stars. No wonder, then, that the Universe dotes on it.
It thinks for a second, then decides. The pupil of Its eye opens ever so slightly, and It sends down something new.
A vessel. A faint mimicry of the self-proclaimed ‘humans’ on this planet, that It can place a fragment of Its attention into. An effigy of Itself, that It can use to play with for a time. A character that It can play, a mask that It can wear.
When the vessel lands, It watches, and waits for the play to begin.

On that day, a person had appeared.
Nobody knew them, had ever seen them, and yet they felt familiar. Somehow, they were known without ever being known before. Somehow, they blended in without a second glance. Somehow, their sudden appearance was forgotten.
Somehow, nobody noticed that the eye long known as Áhorfandi had inched closer that night.
