The Courier’s presence always caused quite a bit of commotion. Nothing dramatic, it’s not exactly befitting of an NCR ranger to be caught gossiping about those who pass through their camps. But dinner is always more lively after another visit. For example, today was yet another surprise with the Courier having brought back 3 bounties. Or at least, the heads of the bounties, the rest of them was probably smashed to bits. They didn’t use guns, somehow?
Your buddy Jamal always gave you a whistle when he saw the courier so you knew to be on the lookout. The two of you had come up with a system, he was often on guard duty so he’d let you know who was coming into base. You used the freedom of your armory station to wander around casually and offer to repair any weapons the visitors might have. Which is how you got quite familiar with the clearly modified power fist the Courier used on their adventures. You still weren’t even sure what gender they were, they didn’t say much and when they did speak, well. Let’s just say that maybe that bullet scrambled more than a few eggs in their skull. Or maybe there weren’t many eggs to begin with, no one could say.
They were kind despite the fearsome aura that comes with being a person able to take down a deathclaw with just 2 power fists and a dog. You heard it was actually closer to 7 deathclaws but that’s too far, even for the Courier. You mentioned having run out of some commonly used materials for repairing guns and they just showed up with them the next day. Veronica, the other power fist owner, even stopped to chat with you for a bit, idly petting the Courier’s dog as she did so.
You shook your head slightly to clear it of distracted memories. You were on a mission, damn it. Jamal would be hounding you for some news come dinnertime and you had better deliver. Today seemed to be a good one, the Courier seemed pleased having beaten down more trouble for the NCR. Even if they weren’t exactly on your side, better they help than be against you, right? You grimaced slightly at the battered heads while your commanding officer said some bullshit about it being a great help to the cause. She wasn’t wrong, it was a great help and all. You just knew that she knew the Courier didn’t care. They seemed almost disappointed that there wasn’t another bounty waiting for them this time, you even saw the dog’s tail sag slightly.
Finally, after an hour or so of wandering and speaking to various people in camp, the Courier and their companions left with little fanfare. Veronica waved brightly as the gate closed behind her and you rushed over to Jamal’s post with new information. Today’s fact finding excursion included realizing, the courier can’t count past 10, the dog’s name was Rex for some unknown reason, and that they were definitely stronger than you previously thought. They traded you multiple rebar clubs from fallen super mutants for bobby pins and some playing cards you happened to come across on a rare patrol around town. Jamal gave you a cheeky wink in greeting as you leaned against his desk.
“Alright, super spy! Lay it on me,” he said joyfully. You opened your mouth only to be interrupted by Mr. House on the radio, reporting some news.
“We’re hearing rumors that Caesar may have been assassinated by an unknown party. It is currently unknown how the assassin was able to evade security.”
The two of you looked at each other, mirrored expressions of shock. The leader of the Legion, whose presence had been hanging over the heads of every NCR ranger for months now, was just gone. You remembered the especially good mood the Courier seemed to be in today and wondered. There’s no way… Right?
