Work Text:
The waterfalls called Virgil forward, as they always did. A low humming sound crawled up his neck, covering him in static and climbing higher and higher until his brain was nothing more than an organ. An organ meant to force an end to his miserable life.
The feeling drove his feet across the sandy cliffs, one after the other, the numbness only growing as he came closer. He could still see the indent of his favourite spot on the edge, unchanged from the stillness in the air. It was fitting, he figured. It reminded him that no matter how hard he tried, everything was still the same as it always was. He took a seat cross-legged and met the scenery head on.
The waterfalls didn't lead up to a river, or down to a deep pool. Instead, they spouted straight from crevices in cragged rock formations, some fixed to the side of the space and others floating in midair. The grey water, beautiful and unclean, tumbled neverendingly downwards. Virgil could lean forward as far as he dared and never find where it led. There was always a part of him that wondered if he could catch a glimpse of the water's final destination if he just jumped, a thought that only pounded so loudly against his head when he was here.
Anybody sane would wonder why Virgil came here so often. He was never actually going to do it so why bother? It took all his of willpower to stay rooted to his spot, ignoring the one singular thought that branded itself behind his eyes. The end of the waterfalls. A dreamless sleep.
But that was just it. It was one singular thought. The humming drowned out the constant cacophony of thoughts swirling inside his head like hornets, no "What if Thomas' friends stop talking to him?" or "When will the others force him back?" to be found. Instead, he was here. Entertaining the one thing he could not do over and over again.
"I know my role, Anxiety. When will you learn yours?"
Virgil forced himself to stand and turn away, pointedly ignoring his old footsteps as he left.
