Upcoming changes to images

In the next few days, we'll be making a small change to the way images are displayed in fanworks. To make the Archive friendlier for smaller screens, we're updating the default display of images to ensure they won't be any wider than the full width of your screen.

Before and after: A work with the AO3 logo partially cut off on the right side, and with image resized so the full image fits on screen.

This change will apply to both new and existing works, and it's being done using CSS. That means it only affects how the image is displayed on the Archive -- the image files themselves are not being modified.

If you're an artist and you'd like to make it easier for others to view your art in a larger size, we recommend providing a link to the full size image. Our FAQ describes how to make a link with HTML, or you can use the link button on our rich text editor.

Art lovers who'd like to view an image at full size, your browser can probably help! The directions will vary depending on your device and browser, but generally, you can right-click (or your device's equivalent) on an image to open a menu, which should have an option for opening the image in another tab or copying the image's web address, which you can then visit. For more detailed instructions, we recommend going to your favorite search engine and searching for "open image in another window" and the name and version of your browser, operating system, or device.

This is fantastic news!! I read on an iPad mini - and when I scroll through a fic that includes art, if my finger does not perfectly move exactly straight to scroll down, the fic just moves side to side because of the art loaded somewhere in the text. I love the art in fics so it will be nice to not be annoyed when the image is larger than the width of my screen. I’m really excited about this ❤️❤️

ah, thank you so much for doing this! sometimes it was troubling, but it really didnt affect my experience so much, but fixing this would definitely up the quality of the experience of this site, which is great!!!
(tho ill admit, i sometimes benefit from this feature, because sometimes, there are just way too big images for my small phone)

    Sorry I think I didn't make myself clear. Let's say I'm reading a fanfic and it isn't a fanfic that I myself created. Is it possible for the reader to change the size of the font itself? If you go on the desktop version of Fanfiction.com you can change the size of the font on a fic. (obviously this only effects the font on your own screen). It would be great if Ao3 had a similar ability.

      At the bottom of each AO3 page, under "Customize" - "Choose Skin" you can choose the skin "Low Vision Default", which doubles the size of the font.
      Or, if you prefer a skin more customized for your own preferences, you can create your own site skin (see the "Skins and Archive Interface" FAQ).
      When you opened the "Create Site Skin" page and click on the button "Uze Wizard" there's a line "Percent of browser font size". Just enter the percentage you'd like to use :).
      After saving ("Submit") the skin, there's a Prewiew option you can use to check if the result is to your liking. If not, just click on "Edit" and change the percentage.
      Once you've created a site skin, you can switch between that and the regular AO3 skin as needed (by going to your Dashboard and then to "Skins").
      It's also possible to save different site skins, e.g. one for smaller font, one for enlarged font and one each for the changed fonts in Nightview (just add e.g. "#cccccc" in the "Background Color" field in the Skin Wizard).
      When you like "Low Vision Default" (or another public site skin), but not everything of it, you can use its code and adapt it to your preferences by copying it and pasting it to the CSS field on your "Create Site Skin" page where you can change parameters and/or remove things you don't need.
      The list of available public site skins is linked in the FAQ. They all come with a description, the code and a preview.

        Thank you so much I'm going through a treatment to help with my depression. The treatment is called Trans-magnetic stimulation. During this procedure I cant wear any metal which means I can't wear my glasses. I'm able to use my phone if I hold my arms a bit in front of me but I can't read normal font at that distance without my glasses.
        The procedure is somewhat uncomfortable so I often use fanfiction,com to distract myself.
        I guess I just wanted to say thank you. You might think that you did that much but it really helps me a lot. Thank you and happy holidays.

        There is one more thing I'd like to ask. Is there a way to temporarily block a relationship from appearing in a search ? (Not anybody else’s searches just my own) I don't really like the relationship Bakugo Katsuki/Midoriya Izuku. If I type -Bakugou that eliminates the character from the search entirely. Any ideas? (I have no problem with other people liking the ship but I would like the option to temporarily disable it for myself.)

        You could write: -"Bakugo Katsuki/Midoriya Izuku" (the quotation marks are important here)
        or add the relationship you want to exclude in the "Other tags to exclude" field of the "Exclude section of the filter options

An unrelated request...could we please have all the options for subscriptions as we do for bookmarks? I mean why can’t we filter or at least search them?

  This would definitely be helpful. As a workaround, I actually use bookmarks themselves to keep track of subscriptions. I'll typically bookmark any work that I subscribe to, as well as add "subscribed" as a bookmarker's tag, so that I can search/filter just those works.
