Tag filtering and an apology

We'd like to apologise for the delay in returning tag filtering. We had hoped to have tag filtering updated, run through our testers, and back out to you by the end of July. However, it's taking us much longer than we expected to finish that code and get it all tested. We hope to have all the work finished and the tag filters returned by the end of September. However, we can't promise we won't run into more unexpected snags, so right now this is a very rough timetable and we may have to revise it. We'll keep people updated as the work progresses.

We've been able to tackle a lot of other performance-related issues since the problems started in May/June. However, sadly this isn't enough to allow us to restore the old filter code, which just isn't able to cope with the number of users the site has now. It's been necessary to completely remove the old filter code and rewrite it from the ground up, which is a major piece of coding.

We already knew that this code was nearing breaking point and were actively working on new tag filters before the performance problems hit, which is why we were optimistic about introducing the new tag filters quickly. However, coding is always an uncertain business, and it's taken longer than we expected to finish the new code. In writing a big piece of functionality like this, it's not too unusual to run up against challenges while coding that you didn't anticipate up front. In addition, we only have a limited number of coders who are able to take on something this complex: the coder who is taking the lead on this project has been working on it all available hours, but sadly we've yet to figure out how to clone her.

Thank you for your hard work, either way! Although I miss tag filters and it's somewhat of a pain to find fic without them, I'm grateful we have AO3 at all. I love the idea of this site, the layout and features, and I'm happy to wait patiently. I wish I could do more to help, but all I know is basic (very basic) HTML. Good luck, though!

Thanks so much for the update! I know you are all working hard to get filters up. If I could make a suggestion for later. Is it possible to program a disable tag filters option for those who may want to search through all the fics? I was just thinking that not everyone tags everything some way and sometimes they make up their tags to don't use many tags at all. With the cap and this issue, it could actually make it nearly impossible to read those fics. So maybe having the option to disable tag filters for those people who just want to look through by hand?

  I'm not 100% sure I've understood exactly what you're asking, but it sounds like you're thinking of the 1000 works cap which was imposed on any search results when the old filters were enabled. If this is the case, then we hope that the cap won't return: the new filters will be set up in a different way which should avoid the problems that made that necessary. We can't absolutely guarantee this until we've been able to test the new filters with real data, but it's certainly the intent. So, there wouldn't be any need to have a 'disable tag filters' option - you could just go to a fandom and sift through all the works there without any further filtering.
  If I've misunderstood what you were meaning, then apologies, and do give me a few more details of what you were envisaging!

    Yes yes you got it! That'll teach me to write comments back that require actual thinking right after I wake up. Basically I was wondering if the cap would return and if it did, would we be able to not have the cap somehow. While I like tag filters, I also like to have the option of just looking through and finding something and not have to worry about the cap.

So, for the half-dozenth time... is AO3 ever going to function with Internet Explorer?
When I try to post with IE, I only get an error message asking me to paste my story into the text field--even though it's already there.
Which is basically the same story I've had with AO3 for a year and a half now. Even after I got a new computer.

  We're sorry you're experiencing problems. We regularly test major features of the Archive such as the posting form in the main available browsers, including all versions of Internet Explorer back to IE6. We haven't encountered the problem you're describing in any recent tests, so it sounds as though it is arising out of something specific to your setup. Since the problem has persisted even on a different computer, the most likely cause is a browser add-on (since most people have a set of extensions they install on any machine they use regularly).
  To help us get to the bottom of this, would you mind contacting support and letting them know which version of IE you're using, a full list of browser extensions / add-ons you have installed, and information on other browser settings (for example, do you have Javascript enabled, do you allow cookies, etc). Hopefully this will allow us to reproduce the problem, which is the first step to getting it fixed. We're sorry this has been so persistent for you.

  Support, here. What you're describing - where you enter text into the Rich Text editor and go to post, only to have it tell you there's no content is a known and annoying issue with the version of TinyMCE (the RTE) we were using. The next major deploy should contain the updated version - it's already passed one round of QA, so hopefully it'll be deployed soon. (If you're curious, you can view the bug on gcode.)

    The rich text editor is indeed where the problem lies. (I have tried to use the HTML editor, but for me it resulted in highly unsatisfactory formatting.) I'm glad to hear there may be hope for a solution in the foreseeable future!

Because if it would I would be more than happy to see standardised tags introduced.

    Introducing standardised tags wouldn't help speed up the reintroduction of the tag filters, no - it would involve an even more extensive recoding of large parts of the site, so it would actually make it take much, much longer!
    In the longer term, if we disallowed user-created tags and moved to a system more similar to Fanfiction.net, that would remove some of the specific issues we have to solve around tags, since it's much more restrictive (although any new system always throws up new problems). However, the freer tag system was very much a deliberate choice on our part, so that's not something we'd really consider. In particular, it doesn't make sense now to spend lots of time and resources changing to a different system, when we could spend that time figuring out good solutions to keep our existing system working well.

      I personally hate standardized tags. Try as you might, you will never think of all of the ones people will need - even with an army of taggers to help you. Something always gets missed. One of the most attractive features of this site is that you allow us to make our own tags - and have tag-wranglers to try and keep down on the duplicates. I wouldn't change a thing. Even if it means I have to wait a few extra weeks for tag filters, it's totally worth ith.

      I agree with what bluebell said below. I don't see how a system of tags that need to be manually wrangled by volunteers is scalable in the long run, once the archive is out of beta and growth no longer limited. Volunteers are a limited resource.
      However, the freer tag system was very much a deliberate choice on our part, so that's not something we'd really consider.
      That's something I can't understand. I get that it was a deliberate decision at one point but I don't see why it can't be changed (unless there are technical reasons and the entire archive code hinges on those freeform tags, or something like that.)
      I love the idea of interlinked tags in general but I really wish it was restricted to preset tags, with an option to suggest new ones. I'm not fond of freeform tags from a reader's point of view either because any tag that's not searchable is essentially white noise, drowning out the actual information and therefore making the archive less user friendly and searchable, IMO. Cute and fun maybe, but useless overall. Sometimes I stare at a wall of two dozen tags, just trying to find simple info about characters and pairings. Why can't the additional fun tags go in the summary field or an separate freeform tag field?

    I get what you're saying, but I don't see how AO3 is going to manage with the current tagging system as the site gets larger and larger. The fact that people can just create ANY tag they want just seems impractical to me and some of the time doesn't really help people in their search for fics or help authors get readers - which seems to miss the point of tagging imo. I think if you introduced standardised tags you could still have a system where people could request tags if they found the site lacking something in particular - just because you'd have a standardised list of tags wouldn't mean that list could never be added to. And even if the site can manage the number of tags that exist now and the new ones that will continue to be created in the future, the demands on your poor tag wranglers are going to get more and more severe.
    However, I'm just a user and don't have detailed knowledge of coding or tag wrangling so I'll shut up now. xD

First of all: Thank you for the great work you do. AO3 is wonderful and I'd rather wait patiently for you to find a solution for tag filtering that works and has been tested than have something half-baked that doesn't work the way it's supposed to. I understand that its hard and it's taking awhile no problem :D i've just gotta say one thing the normal search engine sucks coz you can!t just select a fandom u get all these other fandoms popping up in ur search :P but ur websites still better than fanfiction who took peoples stories down with no reason or warning.

  You should be able to find works in specific fandoms using advanced search - if you enter the fandom you want into the tag field then it will search only for works tagged with that particular fandom.
  When the new tag filters are implemented there will be more browsing options. :)

Good luck to all your coders, and thank you so much for all the work you're putting in. One of the best things about AO3 is your tag system and while I can only imagine how difficult it makes coding for it, it makes the user interface so much nicer than any of the other fanfic sites. Speaking as both a browser and a writer, I'm perfectly happy to wait as long as you need to get the tags up and running again <3

Hi! It's been a while (that I know of) since we've heard any updates! If I missed an update, I'm very sorry, but do you guys have any news about when we might get tag filtering back?
I would also like to say that I love you guys, and this has become my number 1 site for fanfic ever since I discovered it. This is an amazing place and I so appreciate the work you all put into it.

  The current status of the filters is that the database changes required for the new search and browse system to work have been moved into place on the Archive. The rest of the code is currently in preliminary testing. It should shortly (in a week or so) be moved to full scale testing by our volunteer staff.
  The length of that phase is very dependent on whether any major bugs are uncovered—this is a big code change, so it’s important that we make sure it’s not going to break anything on the Archive. So, I’m afraid I can’t give you any sort of hard estimate, but we’re cautiously optimistic that it won’t be too much longer. You can see a preview of what the new filters will look like at the end of our latest release notes (archiveofourown.org/admin_posts/251).
