As part of celebrating International Fanworks Day for the 10th year, we are curious to know how many of you are out there looking for fanworks and creating fanworks of various kinds. We got a great response to the survey we ran for our 16th Anniversary last September and are hoping many of you will want to participate.

This survey asks 12 ticky box or multiple choice questions and does not ask for any identifying information. All users will be anonymous. We ask that only those 18 or over take the survey.

TAKE THE SURVEY

In honor of IFD's 10th year, the survey will be open for 10 days (closing on February 19 at 23:59 UTC). We will be sharing the results of the survey in a public report in March.

The Organization for Transformative Works is the non-profit parent organization of multiple projects including Archive of Our Own, Fanlore, Open Doors, Transformative Works and Cultures, and OTW Legal Advocacy. We are a fan run, entirely donor-supported organization staffed by volunteers. Find out more about us on our website.

Wrote about in what context? Like translating relatable fannish shenanigans into meta scenes in fic? Or writing/communicating about fannish shenanigans in real life contexts? Articles, papers, surveys, forums, text messages etc.

  Yes, I can see that. The intent was to see if the person answering had ever written about fandom events, which could be in a social media post, a blog post, or some other format. Were they, in other words, discussing fandom events and activities in some text space.

      At this point this wouldn't be feasible, due to both the volume of people taking the survey and also the fact that all the translations would need to match. But we'll have a better idea of phrasing next time!

Hi! The survey suggested you can sign up for news by email — I was wondering if you’d could point me in the direction of that? (I have Mastodon too as the only social media I use much but I don’t think you’re on there?) Thank you!

  Glad you asked! Most of our news content is drafted well in advance of release. Because the surveys in particular needed to be drafted and worked on very early due to all the translations, we had expected our new emailed news service to already be available. However, due to other scheduling issues and some recurring problems, this ended up not being the case /o\
  We still expect to make a public announcement launching it within the next month. However rather than change all the surveys at a late stage we decided to leave in the answer option as a way of alerting fans to the fact that it was coming soon.
  It's been rather curious to see that over 150 survey takers so far claim to be subscribed to it!

I assume questions 4, 5, and 13 are/were about "did you already know/were you already following before we mentioned it here?" - I know *now* that you also preserve physical fanworks(which I guess means you scan fanzines?), because it was mentioned in the survey. I didn't before so I checked "no". Similarly, I was previously only following the AO3 tumblr, the survey prompted me to also follow the OTW one(which I was aware of but not following yet) and search for the Fanlore one(whose existence I wasn't previously aware of). Though either I just couldn't find the Fanlore account, or it's inactive? https://fanlore.tumblr.com/ seems to not have posted anything in at least 8 years, unless tumblr is just being weird and not sorting posts by date.
Also, wondering what are Fanhackers? Are they people who make software for fans? Or provide IT security for conventions, or something?

The question about if you were aware that AO3 hosts more fanworks than just fanfic gave me flashbacks to someone insisting to me that if it's on AO3, it's a fanfic, and when I pointed out it was a fancomic, them getting angry and repeating "AO3 hosts fanfic!" like it was gospel. When you access the site, if you're not logged in, it says in big, bold text: A fan-created, fan-run, nonprofit, noncommercial archive for transformative fanworks, like fanfiction, fanart, fan videos, and podfic. I genuinely don't understand how this is still something people struggle with. I has two separate learning disabilities and even *I* get this.

Hey guys, love everything you do and congratulations on everything today!
I have only one comment about question 3 on this survey. Would it be possible next time to include fic reccing as a contribution to fandom? I’ve been modding fic rec tumblr blog for 10+ years and have contributed fic rec lists to other fandom events, and yet I had to check None of the above box on question 3.
