Stuff that didn’t make its way into the final draft:
- Thomas has no effect if someone dies. He’s honestly the equivalent of a taxi driver, bringing people to the afterlife. His blessing to baby newt in the beginning is just that – a blessing, a dramatic “good luck”.
- Thomas can visit newt whenever he wants because he had multiple near death experiences. Newt has a tinge of death on him, giving Thomas the physical capability of being where Newt is. In other words, Thomas can actually visit anyone who’s had a near death experience if he ‘wishes hard enough’. He just chooses Newt because Newt asked for his name (and also because newt was cute)
- Thomas becomes death through a game of chess. He was taking part in a chess competition when he accidentally challenged the current death to a chess game. He won. His reward was becoming the new death. He was 15. (very much inspired by that one magnus archives episode)
- The april festival is based off of the ‘qingming festival’ in chinese culture. Aka the day ghosts walk.
- Thomas is all ages at once. Both as tired and wise as an old man and as curious and awkward as a teengaer.
- Thomas uses he/they pronouns and is asexual
- Newt is just gay
