Chapter Text

Scotty

Leonard was right. Scotty knew that he was. But the whole situation still made him feel nauseous. His family would come over. People he hadn’t seen in years. People he had left behind, traveling across the ocean with Khan.

He knew his family. They would ask questions. And he wasn’t sure he could handle them.

But with Leonard at his side, Scotty felt a bit calmer, safer. He knew that his love would be a main focus on this evening.

“This is about us, remember.”

The Scotsman looked over at McCoy. He swallowed and nodded when they heard the sound of the door bell.

“Let’s go.”

They had put on some new clothes after their talk and now they had to get downstairs to welcome the first guests.

Scotty’s eyes widened in surprise when he saw who it was. He nearly fell down the stairs, hurrrying to get to the man standing in the door.

“Uncle Mortimer, hello!”

The older man turned around and instantly wrapped his arms around his nephew.

“Monty! Ye’re really here!”

Mortimer let go of him to eye the man from head to toe, before he muttered something in Gaelic about his nephew having grown up.

“Would ye please let us in too?” A voice from behind Mortimer said and Scotty looked over his uncle’s shoulder to see his cousin and his wife.

“Marsaili! Anndra!”

Anndra was around his age. When they were kids, they had often played with each other. Marsaili, his wife, had been a childhood friend. Apparently she was pregnant once again.

“Montgomery Scott. Come into my arms,” she exclaimed and hugged him tightly.

It felt great. To hear their voices, to see their faces. Scotty had nearly forgotten how much he had missed them. But now, seeing them, all the worries washed away for a moment.

“And that lovely lad must be yer special someone, huh?”

Scott turned around to see that Leonard had managed to get downstairs too.

“Aye, he is. This is Dr. Leonard McCoy, my fiancé.”

“Fiancé now, eh? Didn’t know ye were ready for something like that.”

His cousin clapped him on the shoulder before Scotty went over to stand next to Leonard.

They all sat down in the living room and soon even more guests followed.

His aunt Eilidh and uncle George. His cousins Elizabeth, James and Mary with their spouses.

Even his grandmother Margret.

So many people were there. It… was just wonderful.

McCoy

McCoy lay back on the bed. The evening had been a blur of fun and food and Gaelic and Scotty on his arm. Scotty was across the room undressing and still had a high color on his cheeks from the evening. His own face curled up in a smile.

“What?” Scotty asked as he turned and saw McCoy staring.

McCoy raised his eyebrows with a slow side to side movement of his head.

“Nothing darlin’, just enjoying the view.” McCoy held back a chuckle as Scotty’s color increased.

“Did you have fun?” Scotty asked as he finally joined McCoy in the bed.

“Yes, I really did.”

McCoy had liked Scotty’s extended family more in one evening than he ever had Jocelyn’s after their years of marriage.

“I may have heard a few interesting stories from your cousin and Robbie.” McCoy grinned as he rolled over to face Scotty.

Scotty groaned and closed his eyes. “Whatever they said was a lie.”

McCoy laughed.

“Don’t you worry darlin’, I’m sure Leah will tell you some lies about me too.”

He was rewarded with a laugh from Scotty.

“What about you? Did you have fun?”

Scotty nodded. A spot of tension loosened in McCoy’s stomach.

“Good.”

McCoy had seen the obvious curiosity in the guests faces at times, but no one had asked anything uncomfortable. He was grateful for that. Everything had been light and fun.

He moved an arm over Scotty and pulled him close.

“I like seeing you in such high spirits,” McCoy said quietly. “Tha gaol agam ort.”

Scotty smiled wide at him.

“That’s better than last time,” he said with twinkling eyes. “I love you too.”

McCoy leaned in to kiss Scotty, and let his hand move to run his fingers through Scotty’s hair. He let the kiss deepen as he poured his love through. Scotty pulled back breathless, but moved quickly back in and pulled McCoy even closer. His fingers tightened in Scotty’s hair as their bodies met and legs tangled together.

Scotty

Only a few days later, they were standing at the airport. Time had passed so fast, but Scotty was still feeling over the moon.

This visit had been a great choice. It was one of the best he had made in his life. And it wouldn’t have been possible without Leonard.

Scott watched his love who was lifting the suitcases out of the car’s trunk with Robbie, while he himself stood next to his mother.

Francine looked happy and sad at the same time. Even though they would see each other again soon, her son was still miles away again.

“Ye sure that Len doesn’t want to move here?”

Scotty chuckled as he took his mother’s hands in his.

“Aye, I’m quite certain. And… America is great! I have made friends there. I have a good job and a nice home. With the man I love. I… wouldn’t want to leave either.”

That was the whole truth. Even though he had missed Scotland so much, San Francisco had still given him things he didn’t want to lose.

His nightmare had turned into his biggest dream.

“Just be careful.”

His mother ran a hand across his cheek and kissed his forehead before she turned to face Leonard.

“Thanks again, Leonard. Thanks for everything ye did. It is my biggest pleasure to call ye my son-in-law.”

Scotty could see tears in his mother’s eyes when she placed a hand on Leonard’s cheek.

“Take care of him for me.”

She pulled Leonard into a hug and held onto him.

“I will, Francine. I will.”

And that was a promise. Scotty could tell by the way the doctor said it. Nothing would ever stop him from protecting the Scotsman.

“Well, ye’ve gotta go now or ye’ll miss the plane,” Robbie reminded them.

When Francine hugged Scotty one last time, he made sure to remember this moment. The smell of her perfume. The feeling of her arms wrapped around him.

A tear escaped his eye as he whispered his goodbye. Why did it have to be so hard?

Robbie gave him and Leonard a short hug before he waved them off.

“See the two of ye in America!”

Scotty nodded and waved his hand before they started running.

This trip had been perfect. He had learnt so many things about himself. He had relived old memories and made new ones. And he had shown the man he loved the place he came from.

But now it was time… to get back home. His new home. Shared with his fiancé.

McCoy

McCoy was tired as they exited their last flight, finally back in San Francisco. He was quite glad he had planned ahead for an extra two days off before heading back to work. He yawned, then glanced at Scotty behind him. Scotty’s eyes looked as heavy as his felt. He slowed a step as they reached the terminal and took Scotty’s hand.

A slow walk found them in the baggage claim.

“Hey lovebirds!”

They turned to see Christine walking towards them.

“Hey Chris,” McCoy greeted her.

He let go of Scotty and hugged Chris.

“It’s good to see you,” she said as she planted a kiss on his cheek.

“How was the trip?” she asked, after hugging Scotty and kissing his cheek as well.

“Really good,” Scotty said, looking at McCoy. “Thanks for coming to get us.”

“Don’t worry about it. Jim was prepared to come if anything came up at work, but it was an easy day.”

They chatted happily as they waited for their bags.

McCoy held the door in Christine’s car for Scotty. He squeezed his hand as the engineer got in.

“So you’ve picked a date?” Chris asked, as she pulled away from the curb.

“Aye,” Scotty answered.

“It’s soon, but why wait?” McCoy said from the backseat.

“Jim is already doing best man planning,” Christine laughed.

“Dammit Jim,” McCoy laughed too. “I haven’t even thought about that yet.”

Christine pulled away as they reached the front door. He was glad he had left the keys with her and he didn’t have to dig through his bag. McCoy unlocked the door and they drug their suitcases through. He closed and locked the door behind them, then grabbed Scotty’s hand.

He began to pull the engineer down the hall.

“What about…” Scotty gestured back at their luggage.

“Tomorrow,” McCoy said tiredly.

McCoy led the way to their bedroom. McCoy kicked his shoes off and pulled most of his clothes off. Scotty followed suit, and let out a surprised noise when McCoy pulled him onto the bed.

“Welcome home,” McCoy said before he wrapped his arms around his fiancé and kissed him.
