Chapter Text
When you’re alone you start to question things
When you’re alone for decades you start to question a lot of things
Airy is no different there as he started to take a long hard look back on his life the moment he…disappeared. He had a lot of regrets, he lost a lot of friends and in a way that could’ve been prevented if Airy was just into them. Why didn’t he like them? They were all nice to him and he was really happy to be around them, so why did he love them?
Maybe he needed to find The One? That’s what all the shows he watched told him,”You’ll find The One someday! You just need a little more time!”
But his time was up
He was gone, dead, according to the world and the only thing he had was an ex to his name.
Was he broken?
The question stuck to Airy’s mind for a day, then it turned into a week, then a year, and finally a decade. During that time he (accidently) gained some friends; not a lot, only three but maybe those three could answer Airy’s question.
First, Host Circle, how Airy thought he could help was a mystery to Airy himself, but he proved to be just as helpful as Airy thought he’d be.
“Didn’t you crack your face? I’d say you’re pretty broken”
“That’s…not what I meant”
“Oh”
Second, Bassy, she’s close with a human, so she might understand.
“I don’t know, Jess never really talks about that stuff”
“Oh”
Finally, Button, which should’ve been his first choice considering that they come from the same world and all, but Button was a little more strict when it came to bringing her to The Plane. Bassy didn’t care as long as she wasn’t in school and Host Circle just didn’t care. Button, however, didn't want to be brought until it hit 9pm, which was the time that she got off work. It was currently 8:40.
He could wait 20 minutes
Airy wasted time by collecting reeds, chopped down a tree, and listening to his cassette player. After what felt like 20 minutes, he headed back to the cave and quickly checked the time on his computer.
It was 8:50
He could wait 10 minutes
He couldn’t wait 10 minutes
“-ises,” Button finished as he appeared, that relaxed smile quickly turned into something more confused and worried
“Hey Button,” Airy said, making the smaller object jolt, but after a few seconds that worry turned into frustration
“Airy?! We talked about this!” Button yelled,”I disappeared in front of someone, they’re probably calling the police!”
“Sorry…I just had to ask you something…important”
“What could be so important that you needed to bring me now?!”
Airy opened his mouth to say something, but nothing came out. He said it two times already, so what made this time any different?
“Airy?” Button yelled, a little more worried
“I think…I’m broken” Airy said, his words slower than they usually were
Button’s eyes widened,”Are you okay? How did you-”
“Not that way…in general, I’m not like you guys”
Button sat down, now curious,”You’re an object just like us, so I would say you’re like us” Button said
“But I don’t…love like you guys, I don’t think I ever loved. I loved people but not the way that they…loved me and they left me because…I don’t know why, I don’t…” Airy trailed off
Button waited for a minute to see if he was going to continue, he didn’t, he didn’t need to,”I don’t know why they would leave you either, but I can tell you that love isn’t everything, especially romantic. It’s just an optional part of life that some objects just said was necessary when it isn’t. I think what really matters is the platonic relationships you make, your personality, and you act and you’re doing just fine (if a little iffy at times) in all of those departments! You’re already doing great without a lover and you don’t need one if you simply don’t want one or, in your case, can’t feel that sort of attraction”
Airy stared at Button, taking in everything she said
“You’re far from broken, Airy” Button finished with a relaxed smile
That answered his question
“Thanks Button” Airy said, a small and genuine smile spread across his face
