Chapter Text
ACT TWO
At Rise: A day later, MALKA stands and addresses a crowd of people, THE CHORUS.
MALKA
My dear Razia. Since the events of last night, many people have come to me with concern and well-wishes for my daughter. It is my understanding that you believe she has fallen ill. In light of this, I offer my most sincere promise that such concerns are misplaced. Rather than wring your hands in worry, good people, take heart. I am Razia, and Razia will never fall.
(AHRIMA steps out from the crowd and removes the hood of his cloak. MALKA spots him and appears shaken before nodding to the crowd and retreating back inside the palace. The spotlight fades from the balcony and the lighting shifts to the crowd below. An OLD WOMAN speaks to a FRIEND.)
OLD WOMAN
The poor dear.
(This catches AHRIMA’S attention. He listens in.)
OLD WOMAN’S FRIEND
It’s a horrible shame.
OLD WOMAN
It’s bad enough what she has to go through. But, having the whole kingdom’s eyes on her for it…
AHRIMA
Pardon me - I couldn’t help but overhear. What do you know of the princess?
(The OLD WOMAN looks around and takes AHRIMA aside so they can speak in private.)
OLD WOMAN
Well, she isn’t the first, you know.
AHRIMA
The first-?
OLD WOMAN
Child of the king. He doesn’t speak of them, but those of us who have been around… We remember.
AHRIMA
What happened to them?
OLD WOMAN
Are you quite alright? Do you know the princess?
AHRIMA
No. No, not personally.
OLD WOMAN
Forgive me. You look pale.
AHRIMA
I know the king. (He looks to the balcony.) Or at least… I thought I did.
(The scene shifts to NIDRIA and RIVKA in NIDRIA’S bedroom. RIVKA fusses over her, bringing her water, touching her forehead, pulling up her blankets, but NIDRIA fights it all.)
NIDRIA
I’m alright, Rivka. I swear it.
RIVKA
You’re not alright. What happened to you last night, child? I saw you leave with a stranger.
NIDRIA
You saw that?
RIVKA
Did they do something to you? If they hurt you in any way, I swear I’ll-
NIDRIA
No! Not at all. They helped me - brought me back here. I wish I could have thanked them for it, but when I turned around, they were gone.
RIVKA
Well, if that’s true, then I’m certainly grateful to them. But, I can’t say I approve of your running off in the first place. Think of if the king had seen you!
NIDRIA
He hardly pays me enough mind to have seen it.
RIVKA
Nidria…
NIDRIA
This stranger… Adakias was their name… I understand that you don’t trust them, but… they saw me. In a way no soul ever has.
(RIVKA gives the weary sigh of a mother with a daughter in love, but she smiles all the same.)
RIVKA
I understand.
NIDRIA
You’ll keep our secret then?
RIVKA
I see no harm in it.
(To RIVKA’S surprise, NIDRIA lunges forward and hugs her.)
RIVKA
You’re… certain you’re alright?
NIDRIA
For the first time, I think I am.
(ADAKIAS appears in the window. RIVKA, seeing them, clutches her heart in surprise.)
RIVKA
This is them, I gather?
NIDRIA
Adakias? What are you doing here?
ADAKIAS
I’m sorry. I tried to leave last night, but I couldn’t - not without knowing you’re alright.
NIDRIA
I’m alright - truly. I felt… weak last night. But, I’m well rested, and well looked after. Whatever it was, I believe it’s passed.
ADAKIAS
That’s wonderful!
(After a beat, they both look over at RIVKA. RIVKA looks between them and sighs.)
RIVKA
I’ll give you two a moment. But, it really must be a moment . Nidria-
NIDRIA
I understand, Rivka. Thank you.
(RIVKA gives her a look, then exits. Once she’s gone, NIDRIA runs toward ADAKIAS and hugs them. She ushers them inside.)
NIDRIA
I thought you had gone.
ADAKIAS
I’m sorry I ran off. I’ve never been around anything like this before. (They gesture their arms in the air, indicating the palace.) I’m afraid I was… afraid.
NIDRIA
Please, it’s alright. I’m just glad you came back.
ADAKIAS
I am, too.
NIDRIA
But, you were going to tell me something? Last night, before- well…
ADAKIAS
I was. Nidria, the truth is… I- (Again, they look around.) I’m afraid I’m not really someone worthy of your attention.
NIDRIA
I know how that feels. But, if you’re worried about my attention, I promise you have it. Was there… anything else?
ADAKIAS
No. Just… Thank you for noticing me.
(RIVKA returns, looking behind her carefully as she opens the door.)
NIDRIA
That was a “moment?”
RIVKA
I’m sorry, princess. But, the king requests your presence.
NIDRIA
Whatever for?
RIVKA
There is a visitor here who would speak with you. He’s calling himself “Holy the Sea.”
ADAKIAS
“Holy the Sea?”
RIVKA
A friend of yours?
ADAKIAS
No, but that name rings a bell.
NIDRIA
It does?
ADAKIAS
It’s from a story I read when I was young. The sea would take you to your destiny.
RIVKA
Well, then I suppose your destiny awaits. (Beat) With a king not known for his patience.
NIDRIA
(to ADAKIAS) Will you be here when I return?
(ADAKIAS looks to RIVKA. RIVKA stares back.)
ADAKIAS
Yes…? Yes. I will be.
(NIDRIA nods gratefully and exits. We linger for a moment on RIVKA and ADAKIAS. ADAKIAS opens their mouth to speak, but RIVKA only shakes her head. ADAKIAS nods uncomfortably and sits. We transition to the throne room, where MALKA waits expectantly until NIDRIA stands at his side. Before them, AHRIMA kneels on the ground, disguised.)
MALKA
Daughter. This stranger wishes to have your ear. (to AHRIMA) You may rise.
(AHRIMA does so. He looks at MALKA and stands there frozen, speechless. MALKA clears his throat and AHRIMA steps forward, remembering himself.)
AHRIMA
Thank you, Your Majesty. I’m grateful you allowed me an audience. I am the honorable Holy the Sea. I have traveled many miles for many nights, and while passing through your kingdom I heard tell of the princess’s illness. If my services are not required, by all means dismiss me. But, I am known throughout the land for my healing abilities, and I humbly offer myself to you… that I might ensure your legacy is secured.
MALKA
Your services are not needed. As I confirmed in my address to the kingdom (and as you can well see, for you have eyes to see with) the princess is fine. Be on your way.
NIDRIA
Wait! Do you know what happened to me?
AHRIMA
I cannot claim to know, with the limited knowledge that I have. But, if there is anyone who can find out, it’s me.
NIDRIA
Father… Your Majesty. While I am certain you’re right, and I feel no trace of the weakness that struck me before, I ask that you allow him to look. For my own peace of mind, and for the kingdom’s, for he’s sure to produce nothing of concern.
AHRIMA
I would be humbled to safeguard the image of the royal family. I am a businessman myself, and know all too well the importance of a good word.
MALKA
Very well. For my daughter’s comfort, I will allow you to confirm what we already know.
(MALKA stretches out his fist. After a long pause, AHRIMA comes forward and kisses it. He looks into MALKA’S eyes with the pain of a thousand years, then he turns his head to NIDRIA. NIDRIA offers her own hand and AHRIMA takes it with both of his, shaking it. Eyes wide, NIDRIA hides her hands behind her back. Father and daughter watch as he exits. MALKA nods at NIDRIA and she bows and exits. In private, she reveals what she had hidden: a folded note. We transition to NIDRIA’S bedroom. When she enters, ADAKIAS rises to their feet.)
NIDRIA
Adakias, I think you were onto something! Listen to this: “When the sun sets at the river’s bend, meet me in secret with your friend. If you would put your trust in me, I will tell your destiny.”
RIVKA
Oh my.
NIDRIA
We have to go! I’m certain he’ll tell us something important.
ADAKIAS
Do you know the river he means?
NIDRIA
I think so. There’s a river at the base of the mountain, known for its strange sharp edge. I saw it myself just the other day.
ADAKIAS
That’s perfect!
NIDRIA
Rivka, you must cover for me in my absence. I’ll have to leave just after dinner to make it by sunset.
RIVKA
Nidria, I’m not sure. It isn’t safe to follow the word of a stranger who would go behind the back of the king.
ADAKIAS
She’ll be with me! I assure you, ma’am, I won’t let anything happen to her.
RIVKA
You honestly think that’s a comfort to me, don’t you?
NIDRIA
They rescued me only yesterday! I trust them. Just as I trust you.
RIVKA
Understand this - if the king asks me directly where you’ve gone, and I tell him a lie, that would be treason. I’ll not be a traitor to the crown.
NIDRIA
I’m willing to take that chance.
RIVKA
No. I won’t let you. I’m sorry, but I can’t let you go.
NIDRIA
Fine. Then, as your princess, with all of the authority that gives me, I order you to let us go, and to hide it as best you can.
(There is a moment of silence as the two regard each other. RIVKA relents and bows her head.)
RIVKA
As you wish, Your Highness.
(The scene transitions. Later that night, ADAKIAS waits anxiously outside the palace. NIDRIA enters and nods at them, then takes their hand and guides them out of the palace grounds.)
NIDRIA
I’m sorry I’m late. My father was more attentive to me than ever. He wouldn’t stop asking after my health.
ADAKIAS
Perhaps he does care, after all?
NIDRIA
Perhaps. But, he picked a rotten time to show it. Let’s go.
(The scene transitions. AHRIMA sits at the base of the mountain, waiting. When the pair arrives and ADAKIAS gets a close look at him, they’re taken aback.)
ADAKIAS
It’s you!
(NIDRIA gives ADAKIAS an enquiring look, but they turn away.)
AHRIMA
Forgive my deception. Palace etiquette required me to hide my true purpose.
NIDRIA
Which is?
AHRIMA
To guide you - both of you. Nidria, Adakias. It is with deep sorrow that I tell you that your future is of great importance to all of Razia. It is through your efforts that the kingdom might become whole again.
NIDRIA
You mean, we can reunite with our other half? But, how?
[Track Nine: “Holy the Sea”]
AHRIMA
PLEASE LISTEN CLOSE
LET ME TELL YOU BOTH
A TALE OF LOVE AND HOPE
IT’S A STORY
THAT YOU MAY HAVE READ BEFORE
SOLD AS MYTHICAL LORE
BUT THIS TRANSLATION IS CLEAR
UNLIKE THE EMBELLISHMENTS
THAT HAVE REACHED YOUR EARS
(AHRIMA mostly sings to ADAKIAS, a soul he recognizes and understands. NIDRIA listens warily, but ADAKIAS drinks up every word.)
THERE WAS A BOY
WHO SHARED YOUR THIRST
YOUR EAGER BLOOD
YOUR AFFINITY FOR LOVE
THE CHOICES THAT HE MADE THAT DAY
TO LEAVE BEHIND HIS LOVE
FOR ALL OUR SAKE
LEFT THE WORLD SPLIT
ORACLE CURSED IT
ALONG WITH ME
THE PROPHECY
HAS BROUGHT THE TWO OF YOU
TO ME
(ADAKIAS addresses the audience with their inner thoughts.)
ADAKIAS
IF THESE THINGS HE SPEAKS OF
SINCERELY BROUGHT UPON
THE PROPHECY
THEN WAS I TRULY MEANT
TO LEAVE THE DARK
DOWN THIS PATH SET OUT
IN FRONT OF ME?
AHRIMA
YOU’VE BEEN CARRYING A BOOK
THAT YOU’VE READ A THOUSAND TIMES
YOU’VE MEMORIZED THE WORDS
BUT IT NEVER LEAVES YOUR SIGHT
ALL THESE WORDS ARE TRUE
THEY WERE WRITTEN FOR YOU
YOU’VE BEEN DREAMING ALL YOUR LIFE
OF SOMEONE SOMEWHERE
NOW IT’S LAYING IN YOUR LAP
WILL YOU FIGHT TO KEEP IT THERE?
YOU’RE THE CHOSEN ONE
AND YOUR TIME TO SHINE
HAS COME
(AHRIMA takes ADAKIAS by the shoulder.)
YOU’VE GOT IT ALL
IN YOUR HANDS
DON’T WATCH IT ALL
TURN TO SAND
ADAKIAS
IF THESE THINGS HE SPEAKS OF
SINCERELY BROUGHT UPON
THE PROPHECY
THEN I WAS TRULY MEANT
TO LEAVE THE DARK
DOWN THIS PATH SET OUT
IN FRONT OF ME
I WILL REUNITE THIS WORLD’S
DIVIDED HALVES
FULFILL THEIR HISTORY
THIS IS MORE THAN DIVINE DECREE
IT’S MY DESTINY
(AHRIMA throws out his hands and summons images of the future, represented by members of THE CHORUS in brief flashes of light. Only ADAKIAS sees them. In most of them, two people are standing united. In one, they face off against a figure on a throne. In one, someone holds another in their lap on the ground. They repeat. ADAKIAS sees all of this, then they look over their shoulder at NIDRIA. Before they can speak to her, AHRIMA again takes them by the shoulders.)
AHRIMA
I lost someone precious to me once, long ago. In a thousand years, it has not gotten easier to bear that pain. I don’t want that fate for you.
ADAKIAS
Nidria… is she truly sick?
AHRIMA
I don’t know.
ADAKIAS
By following this destiny, do I risk losing her?
AHRIMA
I don’t know.
(AHRIMA looks over his shoulder at THE ORACLE, who has appeared to watch from the top of the mountain.)
AHRIMA
But, the world won’t be right until it is done. For your home, for hers… for me… do what you were born to do.
(ADAKIAS steps away from him and goes to NIDRIA.)
NIDRIA
I don’t understand this. What is “the prophecy?” Just what is it we’re meant to do?
ADAKIAS
The prophecy is a part of a story my sister told me when I was young. It says only that two chosen would meet and reunite the dark and light… the two kingdoms on each side of the mountain. The book I read told a tale inspired by it, but… if this prophecy is real, and we’re the ones who are meant to fulfill it, there’s no telling how it should be done.
NIDRIA
We’d be going against the will of my father no matter what. He wants nothing to do with the other side.
ADAKIAS
Nidria… if this isn’t what you want, I would never ask you to go against your family.
NIDRIA
I’ve already gone against him by coming here. There’s something he’s been keeping from me, and I don’t know what it is, but… if this is what it will take to make the world right, then I’ll do it. I’m just glad it’ll be with you.
AHRIMA
You will both need to be trained to harness O.
NIDRIA
(Flustered) O?
AHRIMA
Yes. The presence of O between people who love each other is stronger than anything. But, O isn’t love alone. It is life, the beating heart of the world. In the hands of a trained architect, it can do remarkable things. But, you must be careful with how you use it. Understand this: people aren't meant to have such power, and if you let it, it can quickly go to your head. Rather than seek it out, trust in your gut, believe in your love, and O will find you . Allow me to demonstrate.
(AHRIMA reaches out his hands and demonstrates his power. The lights flicker and we hear the wind rushing. AHRIMA has not done this in many years, and when he’s finished, he wrings his hands together.)
NIDRIA
Incredible!
ADAKIAS
My sister possessed this gift. I once thought it was her gift alone. Try as I might in all my years, I’ve never been able to replicate it.
AHRIMA
It took me a lifetime to master it. But, I had no one to teach me. You’ll do just fine.
(A spotlight shines on THE ORACLE, who stands to address the audience.)
THE ORACLE
Despite Ahrima’s high hopes, it was not to be. Nidria and Adakias met at this river for many nights, whenever Nidria could escape the eye of her father. But, though they were diligent in their training, neither could master the art that their guide would teach them. For Nidria, the harsh, jeering words of the streets’ rumormongers would stop her in her path just as she got close to any true progress, barring her from success. For Adakias, they just couldn't keep the image of their sister from their mind, making a light appear as though it were nothing at all.
But the fault was not solely on the students. It had been a millennium since Ahrima had sworn off the use of O, and his memories were tarnished by the fateful night when his love used it against him. So you see, his lessons were in earnest, but they bore no fruit. A situation such as this was bound to reach its breaking point.
(After a failed attempt, ADAKIAS flings their arms out in frustration. AHRIMA and NIDRIA watch on with matching frowns.)
ADAKIAS
It’s no use! I’ll never manage it! You'd be better off teaching an ass to sing an aria.
AHRIMA
As I have said, O will find you. You can't force it.
ADAKIAS
Clearly!
NIDRIA
Just tell us - what are you training us for? If we knew what we were up against, we could prepare for it, with or without O.
AHRIMA
This part of your destiny is yours to write, and yours alone. You could not force me to wrest that right away from you if you tried.
THE ORACLE
Meanwhile, the king stayed ever vigilant of his daughter.
(The king appears on his balcony, looking over his kingdom.)
NIDRIA
I should be heading back. She’s covered for me, but Rivka doesn’t like me staying out so late.
ADAKIAS
(taking her arm) Nidria, wait. Can I have your ear for a moment? I have something on my mind.
(NIDRIA smiles and lets ADAKIAS lead her somewhere private.)
THE ORACLE
Though the purpose of reuniting their lands was close to each of their hearts, the time they spent together training, the stolen moments away where they could be their true selves… it all served to strengthen more between them than morale alone. The bond between Nidria and Adakias grew with each passing day.
NIDRIA
What’s on your mind?
ADAKIAS
(Playfully) Hm? Oh… I was only just thinking…
(NIDRIA laughs and bumps their shoulder with hers.)
NIDRIA
Thinking? About what, oh chosen one?
ADAKIAS
I was thinking “chosen one” thoughts.
NIDRIA
Of course. And, what else…?
ADAKIAS
What else? Well…
(They rub the back of their neck, more shy than they’re letting on. Unable to look at NIDRIA, they look at the sky.)
[Track Ten: “It’s True Love”]
ADAKIAS
IT SEEMS TO ME LIKE EVERY STAR
AGREED TO MEET
RIGHT OVER OUR HEADS TONIGHT
TO FLEX THEIR BRIGHT
NIDRIA
THE LIGHT COLLECTS IN YOUR EYES
TURNS AND REFLECTS
JUMPS INTO MINE
I’M A SLAVE TO THE SIGHT
ADAKIAS
MY HANDS SHAKE
OUR MINDS RACE
FROM THE THOUGHT OF LOVE
YET WE CURB OUR SPEECH
BECAUSE WORDS ARE NOT ENOUGH
TO ETCH THIS MOMENT
BURN THIS MINUTE
INTO OUR MEMORY
LET GO
TAKE MY HAND AND TRUST IN ME
NIDRIA CAN’T YOU SEE
THAT WE ARE MEANT TO BE?
IT’S TRUE LOVE, IT’S TRUE LOVE…
IT’S TRUE LOVE, IT’S TRUE LOVE…
(NIDRIA leans in close, but they both shy away.)
NIDRIA
I NEVER WOULD
GUESS YOUR TOUCH COULD
FILL ME WITH SUCH…
THOUGHTS OF O SWIM THROUGH
EVERYTHING I DO
IS IT TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE?
ADAKIAS
I CAN’T LET HER
LEARN ABOUT MY PAST
IF SHE FOUND OUT WHERE I CAME FROM
SHE’D TURN SO FAST
AND NOT LOOK BACK, I CAN’T GO BACK
I JUST WON’T GO BACK
NIDRIA
I CAN’T SLOW DOWN
I’M SCARED I’M FALLING TOO FAST
ADAKIAS, CAN’T YOU SEE THAT
I KNEW AT FIRST KISS?
(ADAKIAS kisses her hand. :) )
ADAKIAS/NIDRIA
WE WERE MEANT TO BE
ADAKIAS
DON’T YOU EVER
FEEL LIKE YOU’VE BEEN
DESTINED FOR SOMETHING
BIGGER THAN YOUR SKIN?
NIDRIA
DON’T YOU EVER
FEEL LIKE YOU’VE BEEN
DESTINED FOR SOMETHING
BIGGER THAN YOUR SKIN?
(ADAKIAS, exhilarated, grabs her hands. Both look surprised - they can feel O!)
ADAKIAS
I CAN FEEL IT
AFFIRMING MY SIGNIFICANCE
RENDERING ME WEIGHTLESS
CONFIRMING MY PURPOSE
I CAN FEEL IT
NIDRIA
TENDONS TENSING IN ITS WAKE
ADAKIAS
AFFIRMING MY SIGNIFICANCE
NIDRIA
SHIFTING MY SHOULDER BLADES
ADAKIAS
RENDERING ME WEIGHTLESS
NIDRIA
TRICKLING DOWN MY VEINS
ADAKIAS
CONFIRMING MY PURPOSE
NIDRIA
IT’S SUBTLE AS A TIDAL WAVE
ADAKIAS/NIDRIA
IT’S TRUE LOVE, IT’S TRUE LOVE…
IT’S TRUE LOVE, IT’S TRUE LOVE…
IT’S TRUE LOVE, IT’S TRUE LOVE…
IT’S TRUE LOVE, IT’S TRUE LOVE…
(NIDRIA puts a hand on ADAKIAS’ face. ADAKIAS nods warmly. They kiss! As they part, ADAKIAS looks at NIDRIA with wide eyes. NIDRIA smiles with a hint of mischief.)
NIDRIA
Was that all, Adakias?
(Sensing NIDRIA’S teasing, ADAKIAS smiles and kisses her forehead. But, there is something more. They take a couple steps away, wringing their hands.)
NIDRIA
Adakias? What is it?
ADAKIAS
There’s something I need to tell you. I should’ve told you the day we met. But, now after… well… (They smile, unable to contain it.) I want everything out in the open.
NIDRIA
Rivka can wait. Say whatever you need to say.
ADAKIAS
That day, when you asked where I came from… I told you the truth, but I could have said more. I want to tell you more. I want you to know everything about me, just as I want to know everything about you. But, I was afraid. I’m still afraid… of what you’ll think, of how you’ll perceive me. But, I trust you. And I hope you trust me, too.
NIDRIA
I do.
ADAKIAS
The home I left behind…
NIDRIA
It’s there. Beyond the mountain.
ADAKIAS
You knew?
NIDRIA
I suspected. But, I wanted you to tell me when you were ready.
ADAKIAS
Then, you don’t mind? You don’t think-?
NIDRIA
There’s much I suspect my father doesn’t understand about the world. If someone like you can come from that land beyond, I will be glad to see it brought back to the light.
ADAKIAS
I have nothing to offer you. No jewels, no accolades… As a suitor to the princess, all I have is my name, my history, a beaten-up storybook I’ve read a thousand times…
NIDRIA
I don’t care. Adakias, I love you.
ADAKIAS
(Beat) You love me?
NIDRIA
Did I say that? Wow. I said that. Yes, I do love you. I’m not sorry for it.
ADAKIAS
That’s a relief.
NIDRIA
Oh?
ADAKIAS
I love you, too.
(They kiss. After a moment, AHRIMA comes out of the shadows and speaks his thoughts aloud, unseen.)
AHRIMA
It’s just as she said. I thought it would be a secret until the end, but she welcomed the truth with open arms. Were I in their shoes, I’m not certain I’d have had the courage… But, that only means the two of them will do what I couldn’t do, be what I couldn’t be. Malka, my love, I never thought I would say it, but… You have no idea what’s coming for you.
(A swell in music. All others exit as the lights focus on MALKA on his balcony. He looks up to the sky.)
MALKA
Oh, Ahrima… I am running out of time. The light that you provided me kept me youthful for so many years, I once thought it would sustain me into eternity. But, just as the memory of your hand in mine faded, so too did your O. The kingdom needed me. I took the life of anyone who was foolish enough to get near me, but they were all dimly burning stars compared to your brilliance. So, then, it seemed that only the O of someone I truly loved could grant me the years I needed. My children… I’m sorry for what became of you. I’m sorry for the horrible fate you were left with. But, it is through your sacrifice that Razia lives on. Nidria, my light, try as you might you cannot burn forever. But, how have you evaded me so…?
(MALKA shakes his head and claps his hands, summoning a SERVANT.)
MALKA
Bring me the chambermaid, Rivka. I would speak with her about my daughter. (They go.) Razia… You have been like a stubborn child who pulls its hand away from its parent with all the might it possesses. But, I will not let you fall to darkness.
(RIVKA arrives. She bows before the king, and rises shakily.)
MALKA
My daughter has been distant from me ever since the eve of her birthday. I have done everything I could to reach out to her, but nothing has worked. I know she speaks to you, far more freely than she ever would with me. Do you know what’s taken her?
RIVKA
Your Majesty… the girl values her privacy, as all do at that age. But, I know how much she values you, too. If you would speak openly with her, I’m certain she would tell you her heart.
MALKA
I have tried. She will come nowhere near me. We dwell under the same roof, but it’s as if she’s not even here anymore.
RIVKA
I am sorry to hear it. Being a father is hard enough, but to juggle the responsibility of the kingdom… I can’t imagine it.
MALKA
I do not need your sympathy. As your king, I have asked you a question, and I bid you answer it truthfully: what has taken my daughter?
(RIVKA hangs her head.)
RIVKA
It’s not a “what,” Your Majesty, but a “who.” She has found someone - a commoner she met at her birthday party. They steal away together most nights of the week.
MALKA
A lover. Is that all?
(RIVKA hesitates.)
MALKA
Is that all?
RIVKA
Yes, Your Majesty. That is all.
MALKA
Very good. I will have a word with her about this. You have done well in telling me. Have a good evening.
(RIVKA bows and exits.)
MALKA
A lover - therein lies my answer. And here I thought I truly was fading. Nothing could keep her O away from me better than the O of another. I will have no choice but to shatter that shield.
(Transition to NIDRIA’S bedroom. NIDRIA is fast asleep with a smile on her face as MALKA enters.)
[Track Eleven: “Murder Lullaby”]
MALKA
HUSH NOW, CHILD
YOUR DADDY’S HERE
YOU HAVE NOT A SINGLE CARE
EXCEPT WHICH FRILLY DRESS TO WEAR
OR HOW TO DON YOUR AUBURN HAIR
YOU’RE INNOCENT, HOLD ONTO IT
BEFORE SOMEONE SNEAKS IN YOUR ROOM
AND TAKES IT FROM YOU
I WISH THAT I HAD YOUR LIFE
YOUR YOUTH SEEMS EVERLASTING
MY BRIGHTEST DAYS ARE BEHIND ME
WAVING, I’M FADING
BUT I’LL NEVER PUT DOWN THE CROWN
SO GIVE ME YOUR LIFE
ENCHANT IT INTO MY VEINS
LIKE THE BURNING SUN
I’LL BECOME UNSTOPPABLE
SO NOW IT’S TIME FOR YOU TO GO
AND I’M THE ONLY ONE WHO KNOWS
(MALKA harnesses O and begins casting an enchantment. The lights everywhere are turned on and off, the mountain itself seems to glow and shake. NIDRIA tosses in her sleep. AHRIMA enters and looks at the palace, then runs back off.)
MALKA
WITH O’S POWER, I DECIDE
WHO WILL LIVE AND WHO WILL DIE
FOR THE GOOD OF ALL THE LIGHT
TIME FOR YOU TO SAY GOODNIGHT
MY CHILD
MY CHILD…
(MALKA exits NIDRIA’S room and calmly walks up to a nearby SERVANT.)
MALKA
Summon the great doctor, Holy the Sea. The princess is dying.
(As the SERVANT runs off, MALKA stands in the hallway alone. RIVKA steps into the light and appears shocked, though it’s not clear how much she saw or overheard. She runs off. Transition into the next day. ADAKIAS arrives outside of the palace with a bouquet of flowers. RIVKA sees them from NIDRIA’S window and rushes out to meet them.)
ADAKIAS
Rivka! How nice to see you. Can Nidria not make it out today?
RIVKA
You haven’t heard.
ADAKIAS
Heard…?
RIVKA
She’s sick, young one. Horribly sick.
ADAKIAS
Sick! That can’t be. I must go up there - would she see me?
RIVKA
No, you cannot be here. You need to get as far away from here as possible.
ADAKIAS
Hold on - why? Can I not give her my well wishes?
RIVKA
I’ve risked a lot just by being here. Go, do you hear me? Go!
ADAKIAS
Then take these to her. Let her know I’m anxious to see her well, and I will not go far. (They give her the flowers.) Please.
(After a moment, RIVKA nods. ADAKIAS turns and runs, darting through a gathering crowd. RIVKA exits into the palace and the scene transitions to NIDRIA’S bedroom, where NIDRIA lies sick and frail in bed.)
NIDRIA
What was it, Rivka?
RIVKA
Nothing, child.
NIDRIA
You brought flowers.
(RIVKA looks at the bouquet in her hands and sets them beside her in a vase.)
RIVKA
For you.
NIDRIA
Thank you.
(RIVKA sits at her side and takes her hand.)
RIVKA
How are you?
NIDRIA
Fine. When will Holy the Sea be here?
RIVKA
They’re still out searching for him. Has your father been to see you?
NIDRIA
Yes, frequently- (She dissolves into a coughing fit.)
RIVKA
This is foolishness. You need a real doctor, not that stranger in disguise.
NIDRIA
No! It’s good for him to know. He can deliver to the news to Adakias. And anyway, my father has to believe he’s a doctor. He can’t know his true identity or-
(There is a knock at the door. RIVKA and NIDRIA exchange a look and RIVKA goes to answer it. MALKA is there with a GUARD and AHRIMA, disguised as Holy the Sea. There is something wrong with AHRIMA - he does not seem himself.)
MALKA
The great Holy the Sea has been found, my Nidria. Soon, all of your troubles will be over.
AHRIMA
Yes, Your Majesty. I will strive to get to the bottom of this. Please, give us some space.
(As everyone does so, NIDRIA looks closely at AHRIMA, speaking to him as privately as she can.)
[Track Twelve: “Doctor Doctor”]
NIDRIA
I’m glad you’re here. Does Adakias know already?
AHRIMA
Adakias, Your Highness?
NIDRIA
Ahrima, that is still you, isn’t it?
AHRIMA
I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean. I am here to serve the king, and to uncover the nature of this dark affliction.
NIDRIA
“Dark affliction?” What’s the matter with you, don’t you recognize me?
AHRIMA
(To the others) She’s mad. It is worse than I thought.
DEAR GHOST,
YOU LOOK WHITE AS A SHEET
NOTE THE SALLOW CHEEKS
OPEN WIDE, SAY “AH”
LET THE DOCTOR TAKE A PEEK
NIDRIA
It’s me! It’s Nidria, your student! You must come to your senses!
AHRIMA
WHEN MY HAMMER MEETS HER KNEE
HER LEG COULD NOT CARE LESS
HER EYES ROLL BACK
LIKE CHILDREN’S DOLLS
I’M RUNNING OUT OF TESTS
(AHRIMA goes to speak with the small crowd by the door, kneeling theatrically to the king.)
AHRIMA
NOW I DON’T WANT TO ALARM YOU
BUT SHE CERTAINLY IS ILL
STRICKEN WITH A SICKNESS
DEADLY ENOUGH TO KILL
CURRENTLY, SHE’S SUFFERING
FROM CLOSE PROXIMITY
TO SOME VERY BAD BLOOD
OF THE DARK VARIETY
AND EVEN WORSE, NO CURE,
SO SHE CAN COUNT HERSELF CONDEMNED
SHE IS GONNA DIE
AND IT’S ALL BECAUSE OF THEM
(There is a quick transition as AHRIMA is brought to the palace balcony to address a gathering crowd. ADAKIAS is hidden within, watching.)
AHRIMA
WELL, I’VE SEEN THESE SYMPTOMS BEFORE
SO LET ME DIAGNOSE
SHE HAS BEEN AFFLICTED
WITH THE ROYAL COMATOSE
NOW WHAT SHE’S GOT
AIN’T NO QUICK FIX
IT AIN’T NO COMMON COLD
I’D PRESCRIBE A BONAFIDE
IMMACULATE MIRACLE
WELL THE THING ABOUT INFECTIONS
IS THAT THEY DON’T GROW ON TREES
THEY DON’T FALL FROM THE SKY
THEY HAVE TANGIBLE TRACEABLE GENESES
SO SURELY YOU ARE WONDERING
WHO WE HAVE TO BLAME
CAUSE SHE SPENT MOST HER TIME
WITH THE PALACE’S CHAMBERMAID
OH COULD IT HAVE BEEN
BAD FAITH INTENTIONS
THEY WATCH HER EVERY WAY
OR DARE I SUGGEST, HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS
AFRAID TO PASS THE REIGNS?
WELL, DON’T WORRY YOUR LITTLE HEADS
IT’S NONE OF THE ABOVE
THE REASON SHE’S NOT BREATHING
IS OVEREXPOSURE TO DARK BLOOD
FROM THE ONE THAT SHE LOVES
(Hearing this, ADAKIAS leaps into action. They tear away from the crowd to climb up the palace wall, trying to get to NIDRIA’S window. Seeing ADAKAIS, AHRIMA is temporarily brought back to his senses. He seizes them and holds them still.)
AHRIMA
LISTEN VERY CLOSE
THIS WAS ALL A SHOW
THE KING’S A WICKED MAN
IT’S ALL PART OF HIS PLAN
LIKE A FLEA, HE SUCKED HER DRY
THE APPLE OF HIS EYE
NOW YOU’RE HER ONLY CHANCE
THE SACRIFICIAL LAMB
YOU MUST GIVE HER YOUR O
IT’S THE ONLY ROAD
JUST DO WHAT THE DOCTOR SAYS
(With the last of his will, AHRIMA pushes ADAKIAS away and ADAKIAS scrambles back down the palace wall just as MALKA arrives over AHRIMA’S shoulder and puts a hand on it. ADAKIAS hits the ground amongst THE CHORUS. As they begin to close in around ADAKIAS, they look around frantically before they dash off, unsure of where to go.)
MALKA
You’ve done well.
AHRIMA
I’m happy to serve, Your Majesty.
(The scene transitions, illuminating the mountain. ADAKIAS runs to their usual meeting place and looks around, shouting.)
ADAKIAS
Ahrima! Ahrima! I need you! It’s Nidria - the king’s done something to her, you have to help me! Ahrima!
(THE ORACLE appears on the top of the mountain and calls down to them.)
THE ORACLE
I’m afraid you’ve just missed him. The king’s men arrived to collect him just hours ago. It seemed to me they thought he would be able to diagnose the princess.
ADAKIAS
What? (to themself) So, that really was him, then… But, why? He would never have done the bidding of that monster!
THE ORACLE
I think you’d find yourself surprised.
ADAKIAS
Who are you? What do you know of Ahrima?
THE ORACLE
He has been one of my finest architects, crafting the threads of the future.
ADAKIAS
The future?
THE ORACLE
I have been cursed with the ability to see it.
ADAKIAS
Then, you must know what I should do. Ahrima says the only way to save Nidria is to give up my O, but I don’t know how to do it. I thought we would be doing this together, and now she might- she might…
THE ORACLE
I am sorry to hear of it.
ADAKIAS
Will she survive? Will she make it out of this?
THE ORACLE
If she survives, she will be one of the finest rulers our Razia has ever seen.
ADAKIAS
And me? I’ll be gone? There’s no other way?
THE ORACLE
I don’t like to tell people their own futures.
ADAKIAS
Then, can you teach me how to use O? If I fail in this, I’ll lose her.
THE ORACLE
Ahrima was meant to teach you.
ADAKIAS
Well, he’s gone! Is it truly hopeless?
(At the sound of approaching footsteps, ADAKIAS whips their head around. But there’s no place to escape.)
THE ORACLE
Remember the words of your teacher: O will find you.
(ADAKIAS falls to their knees as the guards close in and circle them. We transition to NIDRIA’S bedroom, where RIVKA tries to keep her awake.)
NIDRIA
(weakly) Where is Adakias? They should have heard what happened by now, the whole kingdom knows.
RIVKA
But, Princess, it's Adakias who made you sick.
NIDRIA
You don’t really believe that?
RIVKA
How else could this have happened? You heard the diagnosis.
NIDRIA
But, it was Ahrima who gave it. He never would have said those things about Adakias - they’re his “chosen one.” (She coughs)
RIVKA
Listen to what you’re saying. All this talk of “chosen ones.” You’re losing yourself.
NIDRIA
No. (Coughs) I’m not. But, none of this makes sense. Someone must’ve been controlling him, but… how could they have known about Adakias? The only ones who knew about that were you and I.
(RIVKA looks at the bouquet at her bedside, guilt-ridden.)
NIDRIA
Rivka?
RIVKA
I told the king of you and your secret love. It was as I told you - he asked me directly and I had no other choice. And with how often you left to meet them, I feared… We were losing you, Nidria. I couldn’t bear it. But, still… I’m sorry for not keeping your secret.
NIDRIA
Father knew… I forgive you, Rivka. I never should have asked you to conceal things from the king. But, please, you have to tell me… When did he know?
RIVKA
Why, just before you fell ill.
NIDRIA
What?
RIVKA
After I told him, he went to check on you - thank goodness you were here and not out there - and he found you ill. I saw him leave your room and summon the doctor.
(NIDRIA’S eyes grow wide. She struggles to get up.)
NIDRIA
Rivka-
(MALKA appears in the doorway, grinning in his triumph.)
MALKA
My Nidria, you look worse by the moment.
NIDRIA
Father… What have you done?
MALKA
So, you’ve pieced it together after all. You’re brighter than I gave you credit for. Certainly brighter than your siblings. Not that it matters anymore - you’re much too late to stop what’s coming.
RIVKA
Your Majesty… What are you saying?
MALKA
Oh, dear Rivka. You’ve served such a vital role in securing the future of my kingdom. You shall have to remind me to thank you.
RIVKA
I’ll tell everyone. No one will let you keep the crown once they hear what you’ve done.
MALKA
Hm. I wonder how much life I will get from the O of a loyal chambermaid. A year, maybe two? Well, every little bit counts.
NIDRIA
Where is Adakias? What have you done with them?
(We get our answer as we transition to ADAKIAS, alone in a cell. They try again and again to harness O but nothing works. They slump to the ground, defeated.)
ADAKIAS
It’s hopeless.
(In a small shaft of light, PALLIS appears.)
PALLIS
I’ve never heard you speak that way before. Are you certain you’re my Adakias, chosen savior of Razia?
ADAKIAS
Pallis… you’re really here?
PALLIS
I’ve always been here, with you. You were right, you know. Seeing you fall in love has been one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever gotten to witness. You wear the light well. I’m so proud of you.
ADAKIAS
“Proud,” are you? (They laugh bitterly) I don’t see much to be proud of.
PALLIS
Adakias, I have always been proud of you. I have always been proud to be your sister. Growing up, we didn’t have much besides each other, and I know you always had difficulty finding a friend. It would have been so easy to fall to despair, but you never did. You and your light - your laugh, your smile, your confidence… You inspired me more than I could ever express. It is a privilege to be beside you, and it always has been.
ADAKIAS
You’re right - I was confident. I was so sure that I was what the world needed. I had to be different from the rest, or else what were all of those years of suffering for? But, I’m no hero. I didn’t leave home for the sake of the world. I left for me.
PALLIS
Do you wanna know a secret? It doesn’t matter. You still tried to do a good thing.
[Track Thirteen: “The Sacrifice”]
ADAKIAS
And look where it got me.
LOCK THE DOOR
TOSS THE KEY
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO
IN THIS CELL OF CONCRETE?
WITHIN THIS PRISON
I CANNOT SAVE HER
NOTHING MATTERS ANYMORE
IT’S ALL OVER
VAGABOND, WHEREVER YOU ARE
HIDING IN THE DARK
IT’S ALL BEEN A FARCE
OLD MAN, I’M CALLING YOUR BLUFF
“TRUST IN YOUR GUT
LISTEN TO YOUR LOVE
O WILL FIND US”
(PALLIS smiles and kneels beside them. She demonstrates her use of O patiently and calmly, and then ADAKIAS replicates it, successfully! PALLIS points at ADAKIAS’S heart.)
ADAKIAS
HOW DID I MISS THIS?
WHY DIDN’T I SEE BEFORE?
IT’S BEEN INSIDE ME THIS WHOLE TIME
WAITING TO SHINE
SO LOCK THE DOOR
AND TOSS THE KEY
I’VE GOT ME, MY LOVE, AND HER
AND THAT’S ALL I NEED
PRINCESS, WHEREVER YOU ARE
ASLEEP IN THE DARK
THEY CAN’T KEEP US APART
MY FAIR NIDRIA
TRUST IN YOUR GUT
BELIEVE IN OUR LOVE
O WILL FIND US
(PALLIS watches proudly as ADAKIAS practices using O before she takes her leave. The lights shift to NIDRIA’S bedroom, where NIDRIA rises shakily to her feet.)
NIDRIA
I am through being your little girl. I’ve found someone who sees me for the person I really am, and for the first time I’ve started to like who that person is. And you tried to keep me from that. I should have seen you for who you are a long time ago.
MALKA
You will stand down. It is useless to defy me.
NIDRIA
Do you know what the worst part is, father? All I ever wanted was your love. I wanted to be someone worthy of your respect and praise. I’ll not stand here and waste my breath on you for a moment longer. I’m going to find the one I love.
(She darts past him and runs out into the hallway. MALKA clutches his heart and turns to RIVKA, furious.)
MALKA
Go after her! Bring her back this instant!
RIVKA
No. I won’t let you hurt her.
(MALKA lunges to attack her, but is stopped by an invisible force. He turns over his shoulder and AHRIMA appears in the doorway, free of all disguises. He’s the picture-perfect image of the man he once was.)
AHRIMA
Your time is up, Malka.
MALKA
So it really is you. Ahrima, my old love. I was beginning to think I’d been haunted by spectors, seeing your face all over my kingdom.
AHRIMA
You were not mistaken. I’ve been here haunting you all along. And, I’ve seen what a vile, heartless person you’ve let yourself become. What happened to the man who wanted to change the world?
MALKA
I have made the world into something beautiful, and it was all thanks to your sacrifice.
AHRIMA
That was no sacrifice. You murdered me that day, Malka.
MALKA
No. You stood in my way! I am not to blame!
AHRIMA
So, you’ve told yourself all these years. But, it’s time for that to end.
YOUR COLD WICKED SOUL
WILL GET ITS JUST DESSERTS
YOU’VE WAITED LONG ENOUGH
TO TASTE THE DIRT
EVERY DARK CORNER
WILL SOON SEE THE LIGHT
GO ON AND SQUEEZE YOUR GRIP
AND TAKE MY LIFE
(Reluctantly, MALKA holds out his arms and makes the motion of tearing AHRIMA apart. RIVKA takes her opening and runs out.)
MY O WILL TEAR THROUGH THE AIR
PIERCE THROUGH THE DESPAIR
AND FIND YOUR EXHAUSTED, WILTING EARS
(The lights show ADAKIAS on the opposite end of the stage.)
ADAKIAS
IF IT’S TOO MUCH TO BEAR
OR TO HEAR OR TO TAKE
I’LL BE FRANK
LET MY INFLECTION BE CRYSTAL CLEAR
AHRIMA
THIS MESS THAT YOU’VE MADE
IS A SIX-FOOT GRAVE
IT’S A HOME FOR
YOUR LONESOME BONES THAT REMAIN
ADAKIAS
I’LL DISAPPEAR
YOU’LL STAY HERE
TO LIVE AND TO LOVE
AS QUEEN OF RAZIA
I CAN FEEL IT
AFFIRMING MY SIGNIFICANCE
RENDERING ME WEIGHTLESS
CONFIRMING MY PURPOSE
(The lights reveal NIDRIA in the center as she runs in place through the hall, searching for ADAKIAS. She can barely move but she’s pushed forward through her desperation and dread.)
NIDRIA
I CAN FEEL THE TENDONS
TENSING IN ITS WAKE
I CAN FEEL IT
SHIFTING MY SHOULDER BLADES
I CAN FEEL IT
TRICKLING DOWN MY VEINS
I CAN FEEL IT
IT’S SUBTLE AS A TIDAL WAVE
ADAKIAS
I CAN FEEL IT
NIDRIA
TENDONS TENSING IN ITS WAKE
ADAKIAS
AFFIRMING MY SIGNIFICANCE
NIDRIA
SHIFTING MY SHOULDER BLADES
ADAKIAS
RENDERING ME WEIGHTLESS
NIDRIA
TRICKLING DOWN MY VEINS
ADAKIAS
CONFIRMING MY PURPOSE
NIDRIA
AS SUBTLE AS A TIDAL WAVE
ADAKIAS/AHRIMA
I CAN FEEL IT
NIDRIA
TENDONS TENSING IN ITS WAKE
ADAKIAS/AHRIMA
AFFIRMING MY SIGNIFICANCE
NIDRIA
SHIFTING MY SHOULDER BLADES
ADAKIAS/AHRIMA
RENDERING ME WEIGHTLESS
NIDRIA
TRICKLING DOWN MY VEINS
ADAKIAS/AHRIMA
CONFIRMING MY PURPOSE
NIDRIA
AS SUBTLE AS A TIDAL WAVE
(NIDRIA crouches down and focuses, concentrating on her O. This guides her where she needs to go. Meanwhile, ADAKIAS and MALKA fall to their knees, nearly gone.)
ADAKIAS/AHRIMA
I CAN FEEL IT
NIDRIA
TENDONS TENSING IN ITS WAKE
ADAKIAS/AHRIMA
AFFIRMING MY SIGNIFICANCE
NIDRIA
SHIFTING MY SHOULDER BLADES
ADAKIAS/AHRIMA
RENDERING ME WEIGHTLESS
NIDRIA
TRICKLING DOWN MY VEINS
ADAKIAS/AHRIMA
CONFIRMING MY PURPOSE
NIDRIA
AS SUBTLE AS A TIDAL WAVE
(NIDRIA finds ADAKIAS in their cell, dying. She rushes to their side and holds onto their hands through the bars.)
ADAKIAS
IT’S TRUE LOVE
WE’RE THE CHOSEN ONES
IT’S TRUE LOVE
WE’LL GO ON AS ONE
(As NIDRIA holds onto ADAKIAS, AHRIMA holds MALKA as he dies. Despite himself, despite all the years, he can’t help but grieve.)
NIDRIA/AHRIMA
OH WHAT HAVE YOU DONE
CAN STILL TASTE YOU ON MY TONGUE
I AM FAR TOO YOUNG
TO LET GO OF MY LOVE
OH WHAT HAVE YOU DONE
CAN STILL TASTE YOU ON MY TONGUE
I AM FAR TOO YOUNG
TO LET GO OF MY LOVE
MALKA
Didn’t we make something beautiful?
(AHRIMA looks over his shoulder at NIDRIA and ADAKIAS.)
AHRIMA
Yes… I suppose we did.
(As MALKA goes still, AHRIMA closes his eyes. RIVKA arrives to find NIDRIA holding onto ADAKIAS. She quietly crouches beside her and NIDRIA embraces her, crying.)
NIDRIA
I really loved them.
RIVKA
I know, dear.
NIDRIA
What of Father? You escaped him?
RIVKA
He’s gone. You’re queen of Razia.
NIDRIA
We did it, Adakias. Didn’t we?
(NIDRIA and RIVKA look at each other and get to their feet. The lights transition to THE ORACLE, who steps out humbly and looks to the skies.)
THE ORACLE
As queen of Razia, there was still more work to be done. Nidria stood before her people that day and told them the story of her father. With Rivka by her side, she told them the story of her siblings and the people cried out each of their names, not lost to history after all. She told them the story of Ahrima, and his effort to make things right. She told them of Adakias and the days they spent together, and the sacrifice they made for her and for the future of their kingdom. And lastly, she told them her own story - all the years she spent seeking the approval and love of her people were long past. Just as she reached her hands out to them, they reached theirs out back to her. As for Razia’s story… it had just begun.
(We transition to the mountain, where AHRIMA waits to meet with NIDRIA. She sits beside him, and they look together at their kingdom.)
NIDRIA
Did I do enough?
(AHRIMA laughs warmly.)
AHRIMA
You did more than enough. Our future is in good hands.
NIDRIA
I miss them.
AHRIMA
I know. But, you’ll see them again, someday. I’m sorry you didn’t get more time.
NIDRIA
I’m sorry for everything that happened to you. That you had to linger here all this time. I can’t imagine how painful that must have been... but, shouldn't your curse be broken now? Why are you still here?
AHRIMA
I wanted to see it for myself.
NIDRIA
See what for yourself?
(THE ORACLE arrives. NIDRIA looks skeptically at AHRIMA, who nods and steps aside. THE ORACLE puts her hand on NIDRIA’S cheek.)
[Track Fourteen: “Epilogue”]
THE ORACLE
THERE’S WORLDS LIKE YOURS
THERE’S WORLDS LIKE MINE
WE’LL FOREVER BE INTERTWINED
WHAT I’M DREAMING OF
I CAN SEE AND TOUCH
IT’S A FEELING CALLED LOVE
(THE CHORUS fills in, all gathered together to see the mountain. It rotates so we see the citizens of both sides, everyone in harmony.)
THE ORACLE/THE CHORUS
THERE’S WORLDS LIKE YOURS
THERE’S WORLDS LIKE OURS
THIS IS A PLACE OF
HOPE AND LOVE, UNTOUCHED
IT’S RAZIA
OUR HOME
IT’S BOUND BY A WONDROUS FORCE
THAT WE CALL O, O, O, O
(THE CHORUS on the light side gathers together with NIDRIA at the center. AHRIMA stands apart, but proud.)
THE CHORUS
THE UNRELENTING CONSTANCY OF HOPE
WILL RESCUE AND RESTORE YOU
FROM ANY SCOPE
THE VISION OF LOVE
THE MAGIC OF O
IT’S ALL AROUND US
BEGGING TO GLOW
THE UNRELENTING CONSTANCY OF HOPE
WILL RESCUE AND RESTORE YOU
FROM ANY SCOPE
THE VISION OF LOVE
THE MAGIC OF O
IT’S ALL AROUND US
BEGGING TO GLOW
(As THE ORACLE sings, the mountain of Razia splits apart at the seams.)
THE ORACLE
THEIR TRUE LOVE
WAS STRONG ENOUGH
TO REUNITE
THE DARK AND LIGHT
THE MOUNTAINS CRUMBLED INTO DIRT
THE REACH OF O HAS BROKE THE CURSE
THEIR TRUE LOVE
WAS STRONG ENOUGH
TO REUNITE
THE DARK AND LIGHT
THE MOUNTAINS CRUMBLED INTO DIRT
THE REACH OF O HAS BROKE THE CURSE
THEIR TRUE LOVE
WAS STRONG ENOUGH
TO REUNITE
THE DARK AND LIGHT
THE MOUNTAINS CRUMBLED INTO DIRT
THE REACH OF O HAS BROKE THE CURSE
(As the people join together, NIDRIA finds AHRIMA. He hugs her and waves goodbye as he exits into the light.)
THE ORACLE
THE PRESENCE OF O
IS MORE THAN WE KNOW
HARNESSED FOR FEATS
BOTH GOOD AND HATEFUL
THE CHOICE IS ONE’S OWN
BUT WE URGE YOU THIS WAY
TO LIVE FOR YOUR LOVE EVERY DAY
THE ORACLE/THE CHORUS
THE PRESENCE OF O
IS MORE THAN WE KNOW
HARNESSED FOR FEATS
BOTH GOOD AND HATEFUL
THE CHOICE IS ONE’S OWN
BUT WE URGE YOU THIS WAY
TO LIVE FOR YOUR LOVE EVERY DAY
(ADAKIAS appears with PALLIS. ADAKIAS takes NIDRIA’s hand and they touch their foreheads together, then face the audience with their hands joined.)
ALL
THERE’S WORLDS LIKE YOURS
THERE’S WORLD’S LIKE OURS
THIS IS A PLACE OF
HOPE AND LOVE, UNTOUCHED
IT’S RAZIA
OUR HOME
IT’S BOUND BY A WONDROUS FORCE
THAT WE CALL O, O, O, O
The end!
