Chapter Text
"Sunny! Sunny! Wait up!"
Basil grabbed onto Sunny's shoulder and turned him to face him. Sunny was crying horribly. Basil looked past Sunny's shoulder and saw the stump. It was all crooked lines where it was half hazardly cut down.
"Oh..."
"I'm so sorry, Sunny. I shouldn't have taken you to the memorial. I just thought it would make you feel better knowing we still r-remember and care about h-her..."
Sunny ignored Basil's attempt at comfort.
"... t-they cut down the tree," Sunny whispered through his tears and scratchy, shaken voice; it was broken from underuse these past few days.
Basil took a small step back. He didn't expect to hear Sunny talk since it's been so long. Basil didn't dare look past Sunny. He'd rather stare at Sunny's dead and gone eyes than the stump.
"N-now how will she be a-able to live on. She couldn't even give her song..." Sunny whispered even lower in his throat. It almost sounded like he was growling at Basil.
"...Sunny... no, I-I-can-" Basil was cut off.
"Shut up!" Sunny suddenly shouted. Basil's eyes widened, and he took another step back.
Basil's brow pressed in worry as he watched Sunny struggle to meet his eyes after his small outburst. Even though, Sunny began to sob even harder, his eyes turning a violent shade of red.
Basil pressed his foot forward making gentle contact with the soft dirt underneath them; hesitantly he moved forward. He kept his gaze on Sunny and only Sunny. It was too painful to look away. He slowly brushed his hand against Sunny's thin arm. Sunny didn't flinch. He didn't even try to look up at Basil.
Basil pulled Sunny closer with gentle hands and unsure eyes scattering nervously all over Sunny for any sign that he might still be there. That, maybe they could still work.
He pulled Sunny into one last hug. While Sunny was still there.
