Chapter Text
There in the master bedroom in the currently situated accommodation, the first-born sunrays of light started to penetrate through the room’s cold windows. Unlike most sane people, Wilbur had a bad habit of tying his bedroom curtains to the side letting the windows view whatever the earth had to offer. He really didn’t remember when he started doing such a thing, but he was certain it was vaguely after Sally’s death. It was her fault after all. She was the early bird, the one who would always bother his heavenly sleep every morning. EVEN ON SUNDAYS. A choked voice in the darkest parts of Wil’s head shouted angrily. He was starting to overcome his unconsciousness and wake up, but it seemed he didn’t like that idea very much as he forced his thought to shut and rotated his body across the bed to avoid the sun rays that were burning his eyelids. Now back to a couple of years from where we currently are, In the same exact room at the same exact time. There stood Sally by the window throwing their royal blue curtains to the side repeating the same incident that happened at our current time.
“Wakey, Wakey” she hummed while seating herself on the edge of the bed that was positioned next to the window and forcing her husband’s eyelids open. Now if such a thing happened even a couple of years earlier Wilbur would have Jumped off the bed in fury and stayed mad at Sally for the whole day long. After all, what was he but a night owl? But now he grew to love Sally’s “annoying” way of waking him up or at least that’s how he used to describe it.
“5 mo…re…mi..kfjfrjufrju”
Sally giggled. Such a soft giggle that you couldn’t even hear from the other end of the room. It seemed as if her husband was still unconscious, but it was almost 7 am and he had his job interview time approaching, so Sally did as any ‘sane’ wife would do and grabbed an ice-cold water bucket she had brought earlier into the room and spilled it all over Wilbur’s head.
“WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK”
Wil, immediately after the edge of the first mostly melted ice cube touched his cheeks, jumped in terror and managed to slam his head across the bucket in Sal’s hand that was still high up in the air.
“Wakey, Wakey. Your job appointment is today, remember?”
“I do but that is no way to wake someone up”
“I already sent Fundy to the nursery, and I have to leave for my job, and I know if I left you sleeping you wouldn’t wake up, and… we need that job Wil.”
Sally was right in every word she spat. They really needed that job or to be more specific the money of that job. They were struggling with paying back their debt after Wilbur lost his last job and they struggled to even get this interview for him so it was either he gets accepted, or they would be on the streets soon. Wilbur was also a heavy sleeper and without something waking him up he wouldn’t get off the bed, not in a thousand days, and would have probably missed the interview if Sally hadn’t woken him up. However, such misery was in the past and Wilbur learned to wake up on his own now... or that’s what he convinced himself with. Remember the open curtains? That was their purpose to wake him up.
“Wa..ke..me..uhhh..mmm..p” He muttered in his sleep adjusting his position to be more comfortable. Then his ear twitched to some words exchanged across the room. He could barely hear what was being said but he managed to form a sentence.
“Pft- look at him in his …”
What?
“Wh..a-“ he muttered under his breath as he tried to wake up.
“I think we should…”
Wil’s ears stopped working till that point. What should they do? He thought. He tried waking up, but it was as if a heavy weight on his chest prevented him from doing so until
“OW, what did you do that for”
After getting slapped on his cheeks by he suspected one of his brothers, Wilbur tossed his head up and sat upright on the bed. He started to open his eyes and his blurry vision started to disappear. There came into focus two figures… Of course. There stood Tommy who seemed to be the one who did the crime that Wilbur won’t let go unforgiven and Techno who had his large muscular arms crossed in front of his chest. Wilbur has not realized till now that Techno has been working out. While he was thinking about how he missed such an important detail, a word from Techno brought him back to the present.
“Wil, your job interview is in 30 minutes”
30 minutes. His head was still hazy, and his brain wasn’t functioning until it hit him.
“30 MINUTES!!”
Wilbur said while yeeting his blanket from his lap and rushing to the bathroom. After all, he had no time to waste… Literally.
In the meantime, while Wilbur was getting ready upstairs, Techno and Tommy descended the second floor, which held all bedrooms including the guest bedrooms, to the ground floor with a mischievous smile on their faces where their mother stood in the kitchen preparing breakfast and their father reading a newspaper on the nearby couch.
Wilbur was… Well… to put it in simple words Panicking. Now Wil wasn’t the kind of person to do multiple tasks at the same time but under pressure those manners meant nothing. He stood in front of the bathroom mirror while brushing his teeth, brushing his hair, washing his face, wearing his glasses, and even tying his tie which apparently appeared out of nowhere all at the same time. It was as if his body had more than two hands and it learned how to move all its limbs at the speed of light. Wil himself did not know how he was doing such things; he didn’t even know when he got dressed in the first place! With 15 minutes to spare Wilbur rushed down the stairs and headed to the front door wearing his classic black shoes. As he did so, he grabbed his CV off the small table that stood awkwardly next to the door house. How did the CV get here? He thought as his mind brought up a memory from the grey areas of his brain showing that he, himself placed those paper sheets with his own hands yesterday.
Oh.
Oh.
“Won’t you have breakfast dear?” His mother Kristin asked from across the room. She was in all honesty surprised that her son was leaving early today after all she doesn’t recall his job interview being so early.
“No mother, I am running late. Sorry” Wilbur said as he slammed the door and ran across the now hot steaming pavement of the road.
Both his parents were confused.
Very confused.
“Isn’t his interview at 10?” Phil asked with a voice full of confusion and hesitation.
“That’s what I thought too!”
While Kristin replicated the same confusion as her husband Phil, Techno and Tommy looked at each other slowly and as their eyes met they both let a choked giggle. That was enough to answer Phil and Kristin's wonders.
“Oh, you guys” Kristin sighed.
Again, Wilbur was running late. I always run late, shit. He thought as he rode the bus. He sat on the first seat next to the window and looked outside at the still houses and the tiny figures of people that were moving across the street. Not many people were in the street only 10 or maybe 15. It was honestly predictable as it is summer vacation or at least the very first weeks of it and no one would leave their house at such time… not likely at least. The bus began to move to its next destination. “The Dreamland square”. That is where the new school Wilbur will apply in. He was a geography teacher and considering that he probably worked in every single school in the capital, L’manburg was honestly impressive. Pft- if Sally would see me now she would laugh at how desperate I became. That was true “The Dreamland national school” was the last school Wilbur would have searched for jobs in. It was where they first met, in high school but back then none of them knew each other… well… it wasn’t till they went to college that they actually started talking. Those were the days Wilbur would say, and Sally would have to eventually agree with him. The first years of college were lovely, and Sally made them even better. All the weird dates they would go to. Unlike normal people who would have their first date at a dinner, or a café, Wilbur and Sally decided to climb the snowy mountains of Snow-Chester just outside the outskirts of L’manburg. It was a lovely date if we excluded the part where they were freezing to death but that’s what made Wilbur and Sally special. It was their common Craziness that made them fall in love in the first place and Wilbur will be forever grateful for such a gift. A noise snapped Wil from his thoughts and back to the real cruel world.
“Arriving at the Dreamland square, Arriving at the Dreamland square.”
The bus reached its next stop and was waiting for its riders to leave and for new riders to arrive. Wilbur couldn’t escape now he was literally there. And by there it meant one of his hellish nightmares.
“Here we go.” He whispered under his breath looking very uncomfortable and disgusted as he left the bus and kept running to his destination. By that time Wilbur figured out he would be 30 minutes late and he would have to pray for them to still accept to interview him, but he was rather surprised when he arrived at the school’s reception.
There above his head hanging from the wall in front of him was a large clock reading
“8:35”
Bastards. Wilbur whispered in his head. He figured out that his own brothers pranked him and made him panic thinking he was running late. In all honesty, Wilbur wasn’t all mad because he knew that was a clever way to wake his deep sleeper self up, but he was rather mad at himself because he didn’t check his watch that was wrapped around his left hand all that time.
“Sir, may I help you?” A woman’s voice called to him. Wilbur removed his eyesight from the clock and turned to face the lady sitting at the large reception desk in front of him. She was a young fine lady Wilbur would guess at the age of 18 maybe. Her long stripped golden hair dangled from her shoulders resting on her dark green shirt. If Wilbur had to guess she wasn’t the receptionist in the first place, but he knew who she was… he knew why she was there.
“Uhm.. yes please,” Wilbur muttered. “May I meet the school principal? Miss Puffy?”
Cara Puffy was her full name and she was in fact… Wilbur’s aunt… now you see why he was bothered about his whole thing? His aunt, his mother’s sister had opened this school before even he was born and he was doomed to get educated here each and every single day of his school’s academic life, and that young lady sitting at the front desk was…his cousin, Drista.
“And why would you like to see my mother Mr. cousin soot?”
“I have a job interview”
“As far as I am aware your job interview won’t happen until 10, so why are you here?”
She was right… but he was losing patience and he really would rather not stay 1 hour and 30 minutes in the school reception to meet his aunt, especially considering there was none there. Except for him of course.
“Just…eh.. call aunt Cara”
While Wilbur was talking with Drista trying to convince her to call her mother so he can talk to her, a voice came from nearby…
“Well, Well look who came back”
…
