Never Trust a Portkey (They Aren't Always As They Seem)

Chapter 2: Victoire Explains Everything and Teddy is Confused

Chapter Text

"And then Teddy activated the Portkey, but something must have gone wrong, because, well," Victoire stumbled over her words for the first time during the whole story because she wasn't sure how to break the news gently. Finally, she decided not to. "Because you're my dad, and are supposed to be at least 20 years older," Victoire said quickly, looking at Bill. Her younger father's face paled, and he stared at Victoire with wide eyes, seemingly examining her, trying to find evidence that she was his. For once Victoire wished she didn't look so much like her mother.
She glanced at the other adults in the room. Grandma Molly and Tonks hadn't heard what she said because they and Teddy were still working on Lily. Her Grandpa Arthur was looking from Victoire, to Bill, to James, to Albus and back again, probably trying to find similarities between the four. Remus and Sirius, while not as shocked as Bill and Arthur, still looked shaken at the news, though Remus' eyes were fixed on Teddy.

"My," Bill swallowed harshly, "my daughter?" Although he was still shocked, Bill had a light smile on his face. "I like the way that sounds,"

Victoire laughed, glad he was taking it well. The group turned their heads when Molly cleared her throat.
"We've done our best. She's going to be okay," Molly promised, making eye contact with Victoire, James and Albus. Victoire saw James wipe tears from his eyes in relief. She looked over at Teddy who was getting a sleeping Lily comfortable on the couch. She forced down bile when she saw that the five-year-old was missing her arm from just below her elbow.

Victoire went over to Teddy and put her hand on his shoulder.
"It's alright, Lu," she whispered. "Lily's going to be okay,"
Her reassurances did nothing to calm Teddy down. He shook his head. "No. This shouldn't have happened. If we hadn't gone to the park this wouldn't have happened. If we had gotten out of there sooner. If you had passed your apparation test. If I had-" Victoire cut her boyfriend off.

"So you're saying this is my fault?" Victoire was hurt. She understood that Teddy was upset by the incident, but so were they all. "I mightn't be as smart as you, Teddy, but that doesn't mean this is my fault. Maybe if you had done the Portkey faster, or hadn't messed it up, this wouldn't have happened!" Victoire didn't care that her words were harsh. Teddy didn't get to blame her just because he was upset.

"I'm not saying that!" Teddy yelled back. "Do you know how much blood was out there? I couldn't think straight! And then Lily almost bled out, and that made it worse. AND, the moon is less than a week away, and my magic is going crazy. So I, unlike you, Victoire, am doing my best! Better than it," Teddy was really mad. He never called Victoire by her actual name. He also seemed to have forgotten that they had company. Victoire wasn't fazed though.

"I get it, but you can't use it as an excuse to blame me. It's not my fault, and it's not your fault. It's those Deatheaters' fault for attacking us in the first place. Who attacks kids in the first place?" Victoire asked softly, bending down and running her fingers through Lily's hair. The five-year-old didn't even stir.

"How about we move this into the kitchen and get some food into you children? Don't worry, Lily will be fine here," Teddy blinked when he saw how young his god-grandmother was and looked at Victoire.

"I'll explain later," she whispered.

They were all led to the kitchen where they got another shock. Harry, Ron, Hermione, Fred, George and Ginny were all sitting around the table playing Exploding Snap. They all looked up when the group entered the room.

"What's going on?" Harry asked, his eyes scanning the new people, pausing in shock when he got to Albus. Victoire laughed to herself when she saw how similar Harry and Albus looked. Like obviously she knew he looked like him, but Harry had changed as he got older. The father and son looked even more similar than usual.
She glanced over at Teddy and saw him looking at Harry with a slack jaw.

"Where are we?" Teddy asked. This looked like Harry and Ginny's kitchen but cleaner. And less muggley.

"Grimmauld Place?" A younger Ron answered at the same time Hermione asked,
"Don't you have to know the name of this place before you can get in?
Harry, as blunt as he is when he's thirty- six, simply asked "Who are you?"

Vicotire and Teddy shared a glance. Sure Victoire had already told the adults the whole story but did Harry and them need to know? Like out of the people she told, only one of them is still alive in their time.

"I'm James," James answered quietly. Victoire and Teddy snapped their heads around to look at him.

"James!" Teddy hissed disapprovingly. Teddy had no idea what was going on. These people could be Deatheaters.
James' lip quivered and he took a few small steps backwards, suddenly finding the ground very interesting.
Victoire glared at Teddy. James was already feeling shit enough about Lily.

"Teddy! It's okay James," the eldest Weasley said gently, squeezing her cousin on the shoulder. She turned to the younger versions of her aunts and uncles.
"I'm Victoire. The blue-haired menace beside me is Teddy, and the little black-haired one is Albus, and James is so smart he already introduced himself," Victoire smiled at her younger cousin.

"You're hardly new members of the Order," either Fred or George said in disbelief. Victoire couldn't tell because they both had two ears.
"Yeah," the other twin agreed. "But if you are, I demand to join. You two don't even look seventeen, and there's no way a four-year-old is joining before me," he added, looking at Albus. The seven-year-olds face went red.

"I'm not four!" He insisted, glaring at the younger version of his uncles. "I'm seven! Why do you have two ears? And why are there two of you? And why are you so yo-" Teddy stopped Albus mid-sentence, clamping a hand over the younger boy's mouth.
Albus struggled and kicked, and it wasn't until Victoire shot him a look that Teddy let go. Before Albus could say another word, Teddy quickly summoned his patronus to distract him.

"Moony!" Albus yelled with joy, forgetting about everything else but the wolf patronus. He went off to a corner to play with the silver shadow, oblivious to the flabbergasted looks from those in the room that knew the significance of that name.

"Albus named it," Teddy explained, not exactly looking at anyone.
Thankfully Bill stopped anyone from asking him any more questions.

"We need to call a meeting. I can go get Dumbledore, and Snape," the eldest Weasley offered.

Remus nodded. "That sounds like a good idea Bill, thank you,"

When Bill disappeared from the fire, Mrs Weasley turned to the children.
"You know the drill. Up you go. Maybe take James and Albus with you," she suggested.
Albus hadn't heard what his grandmother had said, but James did and he glued himself to Victoire, holding on tight to her arm.

"Um," Victoire looked up at her grandmother as she sat down in an empty chair. "I think it would be better if the boys stayed with us. You know, after everything that happened," she said meaningfully.

Molly didn't look like she liked the idea of James and Albus staying for the meeting, but didn't argue. Instead, she just ushered the rest upstairs, much to their displeasure.

Victoire pulled James up on her lap and squeezed him tightly. Both James had Albus had inherited their height from their dad, so were on the short side. Victoire didn't blame the twins for thinking Albus was four. He certainly didn't look seven.
"You're okay, Jamie," she whispered. "You don't have to leave," she pressed a kiss to his messy mop of Weasley hair. James didn't say anything, but he did lean into his eldest cousin's touch, indicating that he wasn't going to be leaving any time soon.

The group sat in awkward silence while waiting for Bill to get back, Albus' giggles as he played with Moony in the corner.
Teddy sat in a chair to Victoire's left, quietly changing the lengths of his fingers, something he was known to do when he was stressed. Victoire tapped his ankle gently with her foot and smiled at him reassuringly. Teddy smiled back at her, but she could still see in his eyes that he was stressed. Not that Victoire blamed him.
Victoire didn't fully know what had happened, but she had some clue after explaining everything to Bill and the others. Teddy on the other hand had no idea what was going on.
Not to mention his parents were alive. That had to be a shock to the system to anyone.

Victoire was about to say something - anything to break the silence, when the fireplace lit up green, and Bill came out of the fireplace with more grace than Victoire could ever hope to achieve with floo travel. Albus' namesakes, Snape and Dumbledore came after him, along with Mad-eye Moody.
Victoire's dad had told her all about Moody. She knew how he was the best Auror of the twentieth century.

"Ah, I see what you meant, Mr Weasley," Dumbledore nodded slowly, "I believe a meeting is wise. Let's begin, shall we?"
