Summary
He repeats it like a mantra, “Hockey players don’t like boys.”
Ilya squints, brows furrowed with fury. He challenges, “Who cares?”
“Well, do you—like boys?” Shane asks, then. It’s so earnest, his bottom lip trembling like he might cry again. Ilya doesn’t know how to answer, because he doesn’t know the answer, but he would move Heaven and Earth to make those tears go away.
Ilya turns his chin up, resolute, “Who cares? I like you.”
At eleven years old, Shane realizes he’s not like other boys. Naturally, his best friend is the first person he tells.

Summary
“You greet me in Russian?” the boy finally said.
“Yes! I, um, I called the dormitory director in June and convinced her to tell me where my roommate was from and-" Shane was cut off when the boy stood and started making his way towards him. Suddenly, Shane was wrapped in a hug. The taller boy, only by an inch or two, ducked his head to rest on Shane’s shoulder.
They stayed like for another few seconds before, to Shane’s surprising disappointment, the boy pulled away. He looked down at Shane and held out his hand. Shane stared at the wide palm in front of him before taking it and shaking.
“Thank you.” The boy said, barely above a whisper, “I am Ilya.”
Shane smiled at him again, “I am Shane” he replied, and for the first time in a long time, Shane felt himself take a long and steady breath of fresh air.

Shane and Ilya meet at boarding school in Canada in 2003. They would die for each other, they are best friends. Everyone else seems to see what neither one of them can, which is that they are totally in love with one another and are both just too stubborn to admit it out loud.

Summary
“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-”
Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.
“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”
“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.
“Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”

Summary
Shane flushed. They were out, now, and that meant they could engage in some light PDA when they were in public. But they both knew that that came with substantial risks, and that it couldn’t ever be like when they were alone. And in their house, their home, they were completely alone.
Ilya and Shane have spent their entire adult lives waiting to be alone together.
Or; five times throughout their relationship that Ilya and Shane were alone together, and one time they weren’t.
