Chapter Text
The next day of school started with Sally meeting Amy at her locker. She was definitely a morning person, being just as energetic as ever. It baffled Amy how someone could be so excitable in the morning.
Amy placed her bag in her locker and turned to Sally as they headed off to the cafeteria.
"So, have you made any other friends since you've got here?" Sally asked as they walked down the stairs to the first floor. Amy shrugged "I think so, her name is Rouge. She seems nice I guess." Sally smiles "that's great! Rouge is one of the cool girls here, she's really blunt and says it like it is. She's also a bit of a party animal so expect to be invited to some of her house parties."
"Parties?" Amy laughed "I don't know if its obvious but I'm not super into big crowds, so parties probably wouldn't be my thing." Sally gently elbows Amy in the side laughing while they step into the cafeteria "oh come on! Don't knock it till you've tried it! I used to think parties were dumb and reckless before but after a friend brought me to one, I was hooked!"
Amy waves her hands in front of her "alright, alright, IF I get invited to any parties, I'll try it at least once, but you'd have to come with me." Amy finished her sentence pointing her finger at Sally. Sally laughed and put a hand on her shoulder "sure! If that's what'll get you to try something new."
Amy had a small smile on her face as the girls went through the breakfast line. The girls continued to talk while grabbing a blueberry muffin and a carton of milk each and going to sit at the same table they sat at yesterday, except this time there were more people there.
Around the table was a silver hedgehog sitting next to a purple cat, a red echidna, whom she'd seen on the bus yesterday talking to Sonic and speak of the devil himself, Sonic was sitting next to the echidna talking about something funny.
When Sally and Amy approached the table, Amy felt a little nervous being in front of all these people she didn't know (minus Sonic). Sally held Amy by her shoulders as if she'd run away and presented her to her friends. "Hey guys! This is the new girl I told you about! Her name is Amy!" Amy waved her hand nervously.
Everyone at the table waved back awkwardly except for Sonic who had a smirk on his face. "Oh hey stranger! Nice to meet you!" Sonic said playfully. Amy grumbled a bit and sat down with Sally. She sat next to the purple cat and Sally was next to Sonic.
The cat next to her turned to her and held out her hand "hello, I'm Blaze, nice to meet you Amy." Amy nodded and shook her hand. Then the hedgehog next to her piped up with a smile "hey! I'm Silver! I just moved here last year so I get what its like being the new kid, true me its not so bad." Amy gave him a faint smile.
"The only reason it wasn't so bad for you was cause' you had Blaze to protect you! If she wouldn't have been here, Jet would've drowned you in a toilet already." the echidna belted out with laughter as Silver's face went red with embarrassment. "HEY! I CAN HANDLE MYSELF PERFECTLY FINE!"
The echidna rolled his eyes "yeah right, Blaze how many times have you had to save his ass?" Blaze held her same blank expression and didn't answer. The echidna huffed and dropped the subject, then turned to Amy. "Oh hey, sorry, my name's Knuckles" he said as he held out his hand to Amy, who in turn shook it.
Sonic was next to introduce himself, though he did it teasingly since they already knew each other. "Miss Amy Rose, tis an honor to be in your presence." he said with a medieval accent.
Amy held back a laugh and rolled her eyes while Sally looked between the two curiously. "You act like you know each other." Sonic smirked "yeah, we do, she walked into my garage at midnight last Sunday." Amy's face went red and she gave Sonic a death glare "you don't have to make it sound like that." Sonic tilted his head innocently "make it sound like what? I wasn't implying anything." Amy growled "you're making it sound like I walked in without permission when I didn't."
Sonic smirked and put fuel to the fire "but you didn't have permission." Amy was so red with anger now, she was practically fuming. "YOU DIDN'T TELL ME I COULDN'T COME IN!" She looked like she was about to bite Sonic's head off and he was practically rolling on the floor with laughter at how mad he got her. Sally patted Amy's shoulder in an attempt to calm the girl down and with a sigh she stopped her growling and looked the other way, pulling her hood over her head.
"Okay Sonic, you can stop laughing now, I think you did enough." Sally said giving Sonic a disapproving look. Sonic wiped a tear from his eye as his laughter subsided "alright I'll stop, but don't take it seriously Amy, I was just teasing, no hard feelings?" He held out his hand to Amy to shake it just as the others had. She looked at his hand, then at him. He had a sincere smile on his face and it was sweet. If it weren't for him practically humiliating her just a moment ago, she could've melted in his eyes.
She puffed out a breath of air and shook his hand, then immediately retreated her hand back and turned away again. Sonic just shrugged. He'll get her out of her shell sometime.

Amy's schedule said she had gym class for 4th period every Tuesday and Thursday. She packed a change of clothes that morning to wear for class since Vanilla told her she'd need a change of clothes and put them on along with the other girls in her class. She wore a basic pair of red shorts with white trim and a frilly pink tank top. She stepped out of the stall she used to change and just as she did so did Rouge. She was glad she wasn't alone in this class, especially since Fiona was in this one too.
Rouge put her arm around Amy's waist as the two walked out. "Did you see that nasty look on Fiona's face? If she isn't careful it'll get stuck like that." Rouge said with a roaring laugh as Amy laughed a little too. "Yeah, she's been giving me those dirty looks all day." Rouge snickered "well she looks like she's out for blood, I'd watch your back girlie." Amy scoffs "I'll be fine, I've dealt with feral alley cats scarier looking than her."
Just then a whistle was blown and all the girls headed to the middle of the gym. The coach stood in front of all of them, she was a short but stout corgi with a uniform on and a whistle around her neck. She had a stern look on her face and she spoke with a loud booming voice almost like a drill sergeant. She commanded everyone to do some stretches first before they get into the main stuff. The whole time Amy could feel Fiona's eyes burning a hole through the back of her head. It was almost beginning to make her uneasy.
As they finished their stretches, the coach announced that they'd be playing dodge ball. All the balls were lined up in the middle of the court and the teacher assigned team captains.
"ALRIGHT STUDENTS, I'M PICKING TEAM CAPTAINS, WHO WANTS TO BE CAPTAIN?" Fiona immediately raised her hand "me! Me me me! I wanna be captain coach!" The coach gave her a thumbs up and she went to stand next to the coach. "OKAY, WHO'S THE OTHER CAPTAIN?"
All the students looked at each other nervously before Rouge grabbed Amy's hand and held it up "Amy can be the other captain!" Amy looked at Rouge with disbelief as she just smirked in return. "OKAY, NEW GIRL IS THE OTHER CAPTAIN, NOW PICK YOUR TEAMS!"
As the girls picked their teams, Amy made sure to have Rouge be her first pick. The teams gathered on opposite sides of the court and readied to leap into action. "READY," the coach counted down, "SET, PLAY BALL!"
Immediately Amy bolted to the middle and grabbed a ball. She aimed for a white tiger on the other side and hit her in the shoulder, counting her out. Fiona countered this with getting one of Amy's team members out. Rouge came up beside Amy as the battle went on. Amy looked to Rouge "are the games here always this chaotic?" Rouge laughed "no, just dodge ball. I think it brings out the worst in people." Amy laughed as she dodged a hit and grabbed a ball, hitting the person who aimed for her.
Now it was just two against two. Fiona and a pink jerboa were all that was left on her team and Rouge and Any were the last ones standing on her team. The game was getting even more chaotic and dodge balls were flying everywhere. Amy was having a hard time seeing all of them pass by and came really close to getting hit multiple times.
Fiona was getting tired of how long it was taking and decided to put all her might in one shot. Just as Amy was distracted, she aimed and threw a ball towards her with all her might. Rouge saw it hurdling towards her but was too late to warn her and it socked her hard right in her gut and knocked her to the floor.
Amy cried out in pain and the teacher blew her whistle and walked towards Fiona "PUT THE BALLS DOWN NOW!" Rouge went over to her friend and tried to get a look at the damage. Amy began to get up off the ground and Rouge caught a glimpse off her pained face. She coughed and winced at the pain in her abdomen.
"ROUGE," the coach yelled "TAKE AMY TO THE NURSES OFFICE." Rouge listened and helped Amy up and walked with her to the nurses office. The coach then turned to Fiona "AND YOU," she said pointing her finger, "ARE GOING TO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE!"
Fiona grumbled and stomped off with the coach. At least I gave that pink pin cushion a hell of a hit she thought.

Amy laid in the nurses office with an ice pack on her stomach whilst staring at the ceiling. Maybe Rouge was right, this girl IS out for blood. What's her problem anyway? All Amy did was ignore her, that wouldn't warrant Amy nearly having her stomach thrown up from her throat by a dodge ball.
Amy turned on her side. Even with all these nice people around her, she could never really feel safe, could she? Even when she leaves the city and gets taken into a loving home, she still has other peoples' bullshit to deal with. Would she ever get a break?
Tears began to fall from her eyes. She felt hopeless and helpless. It seemed like everywhere she went, trouble and pain would follow. When she left the burning forest she thought she'd find safety in the city, when she met her old "friends" she thought they'd keep her safe, and even now when she meets all these nice people and has a safe home to go to, she still has something, someONE out to get her. She'd have to keep fighting, keep guarding herself, she had to be tougher.
Next time Fiona gives her troubke, she'll be sorry.
Amy was brought put of her thoughts when she heard footsteps and a groan. "That's the last time I try to skateboard down the school stairs." It sounded like Sonic and Amy tensed at his voice. She hoped he wouldn't notice her there since there was a curtain dividing her from the rest of the room but she sniffled. It was loud enough to alert him and she cursed herself for it.
He walked up to the curtain and pulled it back revealing Amy laying on a cot in the fetal position with an ice pack on her stomach. She had tear stains on her cheeks and Sonic could tell she's been crying. He looked at her with a genuine worried look "Amy? Are you okay?" Amy shook her head and turned away from him, clutching the ice pack.
Sonic placed a hand on her shoulder "hey, its okay, you can tell me. I'm a good listener." Amy shook her head and shrugged his hand off. He sighed and sat in a chair next to the bed while he inspected his own wound. He scraped his knees on the tile floor in the school.
"Well," Sonic said with a heave, "if you won't talk to me then I'll just talk to you." Amy had no response and just continued to look away. Sonic continued while placing ointment on two large bandaids "soooo, we don't really know much about each other besides the fact that we live in the same.neighborhood, guess that makes us distant neighbors." He chuckled a little. "Uh, if we got off on the wrong foot, I wanna start over. You seem cool and like you just need someone to help you out of your shell and I'd rather be a friend than a nuisance."
Amy softened a bit and sniffled again. Sonic saw her relax a bit and kept talking. "Do you have any hobbies? Anything you like doing?" Amy twiddled her thumbs and didn't answer. "Okay, still not ready to talk, that's fine. Um...I-uh, I do wanna say sorry for earlier, when I was teasing you this morning. I was just playing around but I didn't mean to make you upset."
He heard her sniffle again and she turned around, laying on her other side to face Sonic. She still wasn't talking but she wanted him to know she was paying attention. "and if it'll make up for it, I could come over to your house and help you study. Since you have trouble seeing I bet trying to get through classes is tough." Amy nodded. "Is that alright? I wouldn't wanna invite myself over if you didn't want me to come." Amy sniffled one last time and slowly sat up.
"Yeah, sure, you can come over as long as my guardian says you can." Sonic smiled and gave her a thumbs up. He stuck the bandaids he had to his knees and stood up from his chair, holding out his hand for Amy. "Guess that's a date then!" he said innocently with a big smile. Amy blushed a little at his wording and took his hand to get up slowly. "Yeah, sure."
Just as quickly as she told herself to make her walls stronger, they'd been torn down again. She groaned internally at what she'd just agreed to but knew she needed the help.
Maybe this wouldn't be so bad.
