Chapter Text
Tommy awoke to the sunlight from the windows hitting his face, and the cool air wrapping around him as he lay on the couch. Great, his blanket had fallen off.
He could hear some shuffling from the bedroom and the sound of an alarm. Suddenly a Tubbo stumbled out of the room halfway into a yellow hoodie and just.. stared at Tommy. He held the eye contact for a moment before Tubbo spoke.
“Get up”
“What?”
“It's your first day of work! Get up!”
Tommy looked at his roommate for a moment as he walked over to the bathroom before he leaned over to grab his phone lying abandoned on the floor. He turned it on as he sat up and stretched, checking the time and feeling the stress and anxiousness build.
As he waits for Tubbo to finish in the bathroom so he can go get ready, he walks over to the bedroom door that's slightly opened and looks in to see if Ranboo is asleep. He is not.
“Morning Boob,” he says as he opened the door completely and walks towards the single dresser that holds all their clothing. The clothes may be overflowing and one of the drawers may be permanently open since they broke it, but it works, and he's not complaining. It's much better than having to keep their clothes on the floor.
There were a lot of clothes on the floor though, maybe they should fix that sometime.
“Good morning to you too,” Ranboo says from where he's sitting scrolling on his phone in the bed. “You getting ready for work?”
“Yup, is a hoodie proper work attire?” Tommy asked as he opened his drawer and picked up one.
“Most likely not, but it's not like any of us has anything better,” he answers as he eyes the slightly faded red hoodie Tommy is inspecting for holes.
He had a point, none of them had anything better to wear, hell, none of them probably had anything fitting the “work attire” label.
Ranboo got out of bed and walked to the dresser to pick out his own clothes for the day. Tommy let him be when he heard the bathroom door open and he saw a slightly less tired-looking Tubbo walk past the bedroom door. He made his way into the bathroom.
He started changing into the clothes he'd picked out for his first day. A red hoodie that he was sure had a hole, but he couldn't figure out where, and a pair of dark blue jeans with a very visible hole on the ankle. Definitely not work attire.
He moved to the mirror and started fixing his hair, trying to make it look slightly more presentable and a little less like a thin bird's nest.
“You sure everything will be okay?”
Tommy could hear Ranboo talking through the bathroom wall. He was brushing his teeth when the conversation took his focus, and he pressed his ear against the wall to hear.
“Probably.”
A pause. He took his toothbrush out of his mouth.
“Hopefully, I'm not sure really. It depends on how he reacts.”
That was Tubbo. They were talking about him behind his back! Who would do this? Were they really his friends anymore if they spoke about him behind his back?
“It’ll probably be okay, Tubbo. He seemed super excited about the job when he got it, so at least he's not dreading it.”
False, Tommy was terrified. He may, you could say, be dreading it.
“True, maybe hell be oka-”
“Stop talking about me behind my back!” Tommy yelled through the wall.
A pause.
“We're not talking about you behind your back! We're talking about you on the other side of the wall!” Tubbo yelled back even louder.
“Bitch! Stop talking about me behind the wall then! And stop worrying about me, ill do amazing and incredible!”
“You definitely won't!” Rambo added.
“Shut it Boob! I wi!-”
A knock from underneath him cut off his loudest yell yet.
They had neighbors. Oops.
Who were probably victims of this conversation.
Tommy finished up and saw his two roommates now in the kitchen preparing lunch and breakfast as he walked out of the bathroom a couple minutes later. Hopefully, their neighbors wouldn't completely kill them.
“Seriously though, I'll be fine. It'll be a piece of cake,” Tommy said calmer than previously as he walked over to them and sat down.
“You sure about that though? You've been chased by SBI a couple of times already, are you sure you won’t get flashbacks and die on the spot?” Tubbo asked with a caring yet slightly sarcastic tone.
“Yes, Tubbo. I'm sure they're much easier to handle when they're not chasing me across rooftops trying to kill me,” Tommy replied just as sarcastically.
He was pretty sure that he'd be fine, and he meant what he said! They must be easier to be around when you're not being chased by them.
Hopefully.
Okay, maybe he was screwed. Maybe he'd end up getting terrified the moment he laid eyes on one of them and then he would get fired on his first day.
That was for sure a possibility.
“You'll be fine, Tommy,” Ranboo said patting his shoulder.
“Hopefully,” he replied.
“Okay enough of that, we have to leave in like 15 minutes, Tommy, so-” he turned around and picked up two plates, and sliding them over to them both, “Eat up.”
—
“Hurry Tubbo! We're gonna miss it!” Tommy yelled as he sprinted towards the bus that was just about to leave. He has absolutely no plans on missing the bus and being on his first day of work. Not happening.
“I am running! You're the slow one!” Tubbo yelled back as he caught up with Tommy and panic waved at the bus in hopes that it wouldn't leave.
It thankfully didn't. They got on the bus and spent a good 5 minutes just trying to catch their breaths.
“If I had ended up late because you couldn't find your fucking keychain, I would have moved out and blocked you.”
“Oh no, Tommy please don't block me and move out, I beg, I most definetly want to talk to you every single day and see you every single morning,” Tubbo replied and took a deep breath, still trying to catch his breath.
“Fuck you, Tubbo.”
“No thanks!”
Tommy looked out the window of the bus to see the streets of 16th, 4th, and eventually 3rd rolled by. The ride to the tower was pretty long, compared to the 20-minute ride to the cafe. About 40 minutes, give or take depending on traffic.
As they got further into the country, the districts got more and more powerful. The tower was in the middle district, 1st. It was both the biggest and wealthiest district, and you'd have to be pretty damn rich if you wanted to live there.
Despite the circumstances, there were a lot more people who worked there than in any other district. 1st had a lot of offices and government-related positions, and most of the country's government was situated there.
Because of this, the streets were packed as the bus rolled over the border that was between 1st and 3rd, a big river. There wasn't a big change in architecture between the two districts, 3rd was still a pretty powerful district, but there were a lot more people out on the streets in 1st.
Skyscrapers lined the roads, all of them rising higher than any building in 17th. The bus stopped every other minute to let passengers on and off, and by the time Tubbo leaned up to press the stop button for their stop, the bus was so full Tommy was worrying about whether they'd be able to get out at all.
The bus stopped and luckily they got out of there just fine. They did have to squeeze through a bus filled to the brim though, which was not the most comfortable thing to do.
They stopped right outside of the tower, Tommy looking up with dread.
“Will I ever figure out why this tower is so stupidly tall?” He asked Tubbo as they started towards the entrance of the building.
“I think you'll figure that out soon enough after you start working. You're probably going to be going to every single floor at least once,” Tubbo said as they walked inside.
Tommy groaned as his eyes followed the tower all the way to the top, almost falling when he didn't look where he was going.
The entrance was just as pretty as last time. The big floor-to-ceiling windows in the front let in enough natural light.
Kristin was the only one sitting at the desk today. She waved at them as she spotted them, and a big smile appeared on her face.
“Good morning, both of you! Ready for your first day, Tommy?”
“Good morning, I think so yeah,” Tommy smiled back.
“Good morning Kristen!”
“Hey Tubbo, nice to see you again. Had a good weekend?”
“Absolutely! I don't know about Tommy though,” Tubbo leaned over to Kristen to whisper in her ear, “I don't think I've ever seen him this stressed, and that man worked in customer service!”
“Hey! I can hear you, y’know?” Tommy said as he lightly punched Tubbo. “I'm doing great, thank you. I'm not that stressed.”
“That's good to hear, I'm sure this is a new experience for you, so I'll help you by saying that most people are worried for their first days here, but once you get used to it you'll be fine,” Kristen smiled at him before turning to her computer and clicking a few times.
She opened a drawer behind her and took out a convolute signed with his name.
“Here's a keycard and some keys to your office. You need a keycard to get into the elevator, and to get into some of the rooms in the building, but most rooms are open all day long. You can lock your office if you ever need to with the key.”
“Thanks,” Tommy said as he took the convolute and opened it, observing the contents. There was a white card, almost identical to Tubbo's, except Tommy’s had a blue line across it, while Tubbo had a green one.
There was also a key, as well as a company keychain hanging onto it.
“No problem. Now there's not a lot more info I can give you. For now, just go up to floor 75. That's where you'll find SBIs, and the rest of the team’s offices, as well as a kitchen area for the floor,” Kristen said, before turning over to Tubbo who had been listening in on them.
“Sam wants you on the lowest basement floor today, but you're free to follow Tommy up to his floor if you want to.”
“Fuck yeah, we're working with explosives today!” Tubbo yelled as he enthusiastically turned to Tommy. “The lowest basement floor is specifically for explosive weapons and sorts. It's the best part of my work.”
“That actually makes a lot of sense considering your personality. Thank you, Kristen, we’ll see you later!” Tommy said as he and Tubbo turned to walk to the elevator.
“Do you want me to join you?” Tubbo asked once he got in. Tommy took out his keycard and scanned it, before pressing the 75th button.
“I'll take that as a yes then,” Tubbo said as he looked at Tommy. They stood like that for a moment as the elevator started to move.
“Are you okay?”
“Yup.”
“You sure, Tommy?”
“I'm absolutely okay.”
“Really?”
“No. Im stressing the fuck out,” Tommy whispered aggressively. “Sorry, Tubbo, I'm slightly stressed.”
“Hey, it's okay! I understand, but you'll do great. It's an easy job, and I'm pretty sure they already like you, considering they hired you.”
“I know, I don't know why I'm stressing so much. I think I'm more worried about
the other thing
, I’ll be okay.”
The elevator doors opened and the thing Tommy saw was the worst first impression Tommy had ever experienced.
—
Tommy turned away from Tubbo as the elevator doors opened. There he saw three things.
One: A table had been pushed over on its side, and one of the legs was broken off.
Two: There were two people laying on top of the side of the table. One was being brutally hit with something the other guy was holding. Aka the table leg.
And three: The Guardian was standing to the side, his wings laid out majestically behind him like a veil, looking like he was trying - and failing - at stopping the fight in front of him.
“Will stop, you're gonna make more of a mess than you already have!” The Guardian said as he tried to move over to the two people fighting without being hit by the table leg that was being swung around in the air.
“Never! Phil, he disrespected me so I'm disrespecting him! Is that not allowed?” The man with the table leg, Will, yelled as he kept hitting the man he had just pushed over the table so they were both lying on the floor now.
And holy shit that was a sight. In front of him were all three of SBI. Panic rose in his chest as realization hit him. Okay, maybe it wasn't such a good idea to accept the job if he reacted like this at just the sight of them.
From beside him, he heard Tubbo cough, before all three people in front of him froze and turned to look at the elevator.
“Uh.. Hello,” Tommy said after a moment with an awkward wave. Tubbo also waved slightly, before pushing Tommy out of the elevator and pressing one of the buttons.
“Wait, Tubbo!” Tommy said as he realized what had happened.
“Youlldogreathaveaniceday!” Tubbo exclaimed as the doors completely closed.
He kept his eyes on the closed elevator doors for a moment before turning around and facing his new reality.
“Hello, Tommy,” The Guardian said with a strained smile. As Tubbo had left, he had moved closer to where Tommy was and away from the pile on the floor.
From the pile came a “Morning,” but he didn't get to see who it was as The Guardian put his hand on his shoulder and started leading him away into one of the hallways to the right.
“Let's do the introductions with those two later when they're not acting like children ,” The Guardian said, yelling the last bit slightly to make a point to the pile. The Guardian turned his head to Tommy and smiled, “Had a good morning?”
“Uh, yeah, it was okay,” Tommy said, still slightly unsure of how to act. He turned his head around slightly to watch as the pink-haired person on the ground pushed the table leg guy off of him before The Guardian spoke again.
“Right, sorry about that. They've still not figured out how to act in the workplace. That was Wilbur and Techno, you know them as Icarus and Blade. I promise they're not as bad as they look, they just had a slight disagreement,” Phil said.
“It was not ‘just’ a disagreement, Techno blatantly disrespected me so I took revenge!” Wilbur, Tommy assumed, yelled from behind them.
“Revenge is not the answer Will!” Phil yelled back, making Tommy laugh slightly. Phil joined him a moment later.
They kept walking for a couple more seconds before Phil stopped them at a door.
“And this here is your new office!” Phil said enthusiastically as he opened the door for Tommy to see.
The office was decently big, big enough to do anything an office worker may need to do in the office, that's for sure. There were floor-to-ceiling windows on the furthest wall, and in the middle of the room was a big desk with a computer on top, as well as a white box next to the screen.
There were bookshelves lining the left wall, most of them empty, save the couple of fake plants or other small decor pieces that had been left, and two comfortable-looking chairs were sitting in the corner.
He walked into the office and took it in. The window was slightly open, letting in a nice breeze so as to not make the office too warm, and the room was just generally very nice.
“Is this entire office for just me?” Tommy asked after he had taken it all in. It was much, much bigger than he had expected. It couldn't be just for him.
“Yup, all for you. Sorry it's so bland right now, we didn't have time to decorate much before you got here. For now, you can bring in your own stuff, or order stuff from the computer. Anything for the offices is paid for by the company, so feel free to order anything you may need, within reason of course,” Phil explained as he walked over to the computer.
“The computer is new, as the previous one had been here a couple of years. The login for your work account is on your keycard, as well as your work email. I have some work to do for now, so I'll give you a couple of hours to just get settled into the office. Login to everything you need, move stuff around if you feel like it, and stuff like that.”
Phil pats the box sitting on the desk. “There are some supplies you may need in here, including a list of all the programs you're gonna need for the job,” he said.
“I'll come by later before lunch to give you a tour of the rest of the floor, as well as the other floors you'll be on.”
“The kitchen is always available, so feel free to go snooping in there if you want a snack. It gets stocked weekly with a bunch of stuff, and we have a collaborative shopping list where everyone can write down what they want.”
Phil turned back and walked over to the door, stopping right outside it.
“My office is at the end of the hallway, so just knock if you need anything. The bathrooms are at the other side of the hall,” Phil said as he motioned towards where he meant, “Feel free to pop into my office if you need anything, I don't mind.”
Tommy looked around one last time and thought over all the information he had just gotten. There was a lot.
“Sorry if it's too much at once, don't worry about remembering everything, you'll get used to the place eventually. I think that's everything for now though, just log onto the computer and get set up, move some stuff around in here if you want to, and do whatever makes you feel comfortable in here, this is your space from now on.”
“I think I've got everything, thanks, Guardian,” Tommy said as he moved to the door to stand closer to his boss. Boss? Was Guardian his boss?
He'd have to ask.
“Call me Phil, mate, and no problem. I'll talk you you in a couple of hours, okay? Have a nice first day, Tommy,” Phil said as he backed out of the room.
“Thanks, Phil,” Tommy said with a mile. “I'll see you later,”
Phil then left and he was alone.
He stood there for a moment, watching the door as he closed and shut it completely, before he turned around and walked around the desk. He collapsed into the office chair and spent a couple of minutes recollecting himself.
From now on he was officially working for SBI.
That’s a sentence he never thought he'd have to think.
“Okay then, let us get started,” he said to himself as he booted up the computer.
It was a big thing, there were two screens on the desk and the computer sat underneath, next to some drawers. The screen lit up and he went to log in.
He fished the convolute out of his hoodie pocket and opened it upside down, letting its contents fall onto the desk. He picked up the keycard, scanned it for some email and login, and found an email, a username, and a temporary password on a sticky note stuck to the back.
Pulling the keyboard towards him, he typed in the username and password, carefully so as to not get it wrong, and then he was in.
He was met with a plain, unused account. The home screen didn't have anything on it, except the recycle bin and some programs he hadn't heard of before, presumably something he needed for work.
He picked up the box sitting next to the computer, opening the lid slightly and peeking in. Inside were a couple of notebooks, some pens and pencils, but on top sat a white paper, with a list.
The list consisted of all the things he needed on his computer to actually do his job, so one by one he read off the list and downloaded or logged into everything.
There were some programs he recognized, like PowerPoint, Google Docs, and some news sites that the list deemed useful enough to be there, but at the end of the list ‘Tetris’ was listed as the final thing he needed.
Why? Tommy had no idea.
After an hour or so of this - yes, a literal hour he spent downloading a couple of programs, it took that long - he finally finished up the last one and pushed the chair away from the desk.
He rolled the chair over to the window, so he was almost leaning on it, and scanned the room, eyes stopping on the giant desk in the center of the room.
“I don't like that,” Tommy said as his eyes narrowed on the desk still not moving from the middle of the room.
It didn't look too heavy. Sure it was big and it may be a hassle to move, but it probably wasn't that heavy.
And so Tommy rose to his feet and started pushing on the desk, trying to move it so it was against the wall. Something just felt wrong with it being in the middle of the room. And it was the perfect l shape to put against the wall! Who could blame him?
Plus, it felt strange to have a big desk in the middle of the room. Made him feel like him.
He didn't want to feel like that.
The desk was pushed up against the wall on the opposite side of the bookshelves, and, Tommy sat down in the chair and rolled over to the door to inspect the room.
It looked better now. He would have to get some curtains though, the sun was shining right through the windows and making the room a bit too bright. He put that on a mental list of things to get for the office.
Some other things Tommy put on the list consisted of some cushions, because his ass was getting stiff from how hard the chair was getting, and some form of pen organizer because the big box on the desk was not gonna cut it.
As he was spinning around in the chair, making up this list, he heard a knock at the door behind him. He wasn't sitting far from the door, and out of laziness, he opted for rolling the last few feet and opening the door sitting.
“Hello, Tom-.. Tommy,” Phil's voice said as he spotted the boy sitting, adjusting his face after realizing he was sitting.
“Hi, Gua- Phil, how are you?” He said as he eventually stood up and pushed the chair with him further back to let Phil into the room. “What's up? It's not lunch already is it?”
Phil followed him into the room, but as Tommy turned around to look at him, he saw another person enter behind him, looking slightly less energetic than Phil.
“No, it's not lunch yet, Tommy,” Phil said as he settled into the room.
“Sadly,” came from the pink-haired man behind him. Phil turned to look at him, chuckling a bit as he gave him a look.
“Techno here,” he motioned to the pink-haired man Tommy now recognized from the interview as Blade, “has some reports he's behind on, and I thought he could teach you how to do them so you can work on them together!” The hero said with a smile on his face and way too much energy for it still being morning.
Tommy then noticed the stack of papers in Techno’s grip, most of them seemingly with the same layout. Techno walked forward and put them on the desk for Tommy to see.
“I uh.. There are less than it looks like..? Most of them are almost completely filled out,” Techno said with a monotone voice.
Tommy looked up at the man, noting the tired and uninterested look in his eyes. Like, not just a ‘it's early I’m still waking up’ uninterested, but a ‘I would rather die than do this’, unintrested.
Ah yes, let Tommy's work life as an assistant begin. His first task, do other people's work.
“Techno, you're going to help him fill them out, he's not just here to do your work,” Phil said sternly. “He's not a big fan of reports, it's why he has so many piled up. They're all recent, as in the past 2 months or so.”
“I have some reports to do myself, so I'll leave you to it. Tech’ll teach you how to fill them in and all that stuff, Tommy,” Phil then said, before walking towards the door and leaving the two.
Alone.
In an extremely awkward silence.
Techno looked back helplessly as Phil left the room, standing still for a moment before slowly grabbing one of the chairs in the corner and pushing them over to the desk. As he sat down, he looked at the papers, sighed, and locked eyes with Tommy.
Now, Tommy would say that he is good at filling in silences, even awkward ones. His loud and explosive personality helped with that, but for some reason, he wasn't able to get a single word out as he held the eye contact.
They sat for several seconds like that, before Tommy blinked and a “Hah, you lost,” came out of Techno's mouth in that same monotone voice.
“I- What?” Tommy laughed unsure, looking up at Techno. “I didn't even know we were having a stare-off.”
“Would you rather have us still sitting in silence not doing anythin’?” Techno said as he leaned over the box and fished out a pen. “You should get a pencil case or something for these.”
Tommy leaned over and grabbed one for himself, before replying, “It's on the list, big man.”
“Uh-huh, I sure hope so for your sake,” Techno replied, as he grabbed the paper on top and looked it over. “So uh, basically what you have to do, is uh, fill in the blanks. Like a.. Test?”
Tommy narrowed his eyes at Techno as he grabbed the next paper and scanned it.
It was actually kind of laid out as a test, at least a tiny bit, with the questions being paired with a dark gray box with lines to write on.
“You just answer the questions, and write ‘em down in the box,” Techno said as he quickly read over what was already written on the papers. Tommy looked at his own and saw that there was already stuff written down.
Firstly, the date and title were filled in. Under, he could see that a box for the question ‘What is the situation?’ was ticked. The box that was ticked was for robbery, matching the title further up the page, Civilian Robbery. Under, the line for location had been filled in, someplace in 5th, Tommy recognized.
The next few questions were about the scene. ‘Were there any injuries?’ Were authorities there when the hero in question arrived?’ and under, a box was filled in under the question ‘If there was a criminal at the scene, who? If an alias is unknown, please give a detailed explanation of their looks.’
“So uh..” Tommy started, looking up at Techno. “Were there any injuries? Cause I was, maybe to your surprise, not at the scene. I don't know what the fuck I'm doing.”
Techno looked at him, no way Tommy was able to read his eyes, before letting out a sigh. “Right..”
“Uh, right, yeah. There were no injuries to any civilian. The criminals, there were two, both got a concussion after being knocked unconscious. They were brought to the hospital right after,” Techno looked away for a moment, “I think..”
Tommy quickly scribbled down what Techno had just said, before reading out the next question on the paper. Techno proceeded to answer with the relevant information that Tommy would write down, changing the sentences a little sometimes to make them sound more professional.
They spent the next hour and a half like this, helping each other with the reports. Techno would write on his own papers while Tommy was writing on his own, and then they would discuss the next questions.
It was nice, Techno warmed up to him slightly over the time they spent together, and at the end of their session, it didn't completely feel like he was talking to a brick wall.
Techno fished out his phone after he finished writing his last report, while Tommy was still trying to reformulate the last sentence of the final question on his. As he finished, he saw the man write something on his phone, before looking up at him.
“Wilbur wants to have lunch together, wanna come?”
And who was Tommy to say no to the Blade?
“Sure!”
“Come along then, kid, I'll show you where the cafeteria is.”
“Hey! I'm not a kid? What the fuck?”
“Well you look like a kid, kid ,” Techno said as they walked into the elevator and began moving.
—
Tommy and Techno walked into the cafeteria, both immediately being hit by the loud noise of an entire building having lunch at the same time.
Yes, the entire building.
The cafeteria was big, taking up the entire floor, and there were two food stations, where people were standing in long queues to get to their food.
Tables were spread around the room, people filling them all, and as Tommy looked out over the sea of people, he started getting nervous.
“There's uhm, a lot of people here, Techno,” Tommy said as he took a step back. Techno looked back at him quickly, before scanning the room once more, seemingly looking for something.
“Tech! Tommy! Over here!” Was heard above the sound of people.
Or someone.
Techno looked towards where the yell came from, and grabbed Tommy's arm as he started making his way towards a man waving like a maniac from a table.
“We don't usually eat here, but Phil thought it would be good to show you around here in case you don't bring food some days. You can get some pretty good, cheap meals here in case the kitchen upstairs is empty,” Techno said as they walked, letting go of Tommy's arm as quickly as he grabbed it.
Tommy followed Techno through the crowded cafeteria as they made their way towards the brown-haired man, now finally sitting down from his waving earlier.
The noise was getting overwhelming, and Tommy was starting to feel done with the place already. He quickened his steps slightly.
They approached the empty - save for the man sitting there - table, and Techno pulled out a chair and sat down. Tommy followed swiftly, ducking down slightly to try to drown out the noise.
“Hey, Wilbur,” Techno greeted as he sat down.
Eight, that was Wilbur, or Icarus, Tommy reminded himself. He was a tall guy, a little lanky and his hair was a mess, but he looked friendly enough.
Tommy gave a small nod of acknowledgment as Wilbur greeted them both. “Morning, Tech, morning Tommy! Good to see you,” Wilbur said. “It's nice to properly meet you, kid.”
“I'm not a kid, dickhead,” Tommy said as he lifted his head slightly - regretting it immediately - and looked at Wilbur.
He was wearing a pair of gray glasses, and he was grinning.
“Okay then, keep telling yourself that,” Techno said from his side. Tommy kicked him lightly, techno settling a gaze on him that lasted a couple of seconds before he moved his attention to Wilbur.
“Can we leave now? I'd rather not be here much longer, thanks, and the child seems to be thinking the same thing,” the hero said to Wilbur.
“Yeah, we can leave if you want to. Do you have food Tommy, or do you wanna get something from here? The food’s not half bad.”
“I guess I'lll grab something, anything you reccomend, old man?” See? Tommy could call people out on their ages as well!
“Oh shut up! How are you calling me old? If you're gonna call someone around here old you better talk to Phil!” Wilbur exclaimed with mock offense.
“I didn't say he wasn't old, just that the two of you are both old,” Tommy replied with a shit-eating grin he knew would bother Wilbur.
“How dare you compare me to Phil in age? You little shit!”
“Okay, Wilbur, shut up, Tommy, go get in line for the sandwiches. They're the best thing in this place,” Techno said as he shoved his hand over Wilbur's mouth to shut him up.
“Okay sir,” Tommy replied as he quickly stood and walked over to the line, before grabbing a plate and waiting.
As the line moved, Tommy could hear Wilbur and Techno's conversation from somewhere behind him. He looked over his shoulder to see Wilbur wrestle free from Techno's hand, before spitting out something about how his age ‘had some advantages’ or some similar bullshit, though Tommy couldn't hear everything through the noise around him.
He could see Techno roll his eyes, before saying something that Tommy didn't catch.
Tommy finally reached the counter and ordered one of the sandwiches from the display case. There seemed to be some avocado, and some form of chicken - maybe turkey? - on some white bread.
He picked up his plate and walked over to the two still sitting at the table.
“Ah, a classic,” Wilbur noted, as he saw the sandwich in Tommy's hands. “Let’s go sit on the office floor, yeah? There are some couches there that no one ever uses except us.”
“That's because we're almost the only ones on the floor, Wil, and also because you're always there,” Techno said as he stood and started to walk ahead of them.
“Don't listen to him. I'm not always there. Just sometimes, cause my desk chair is painful,” Wilbur said as he too stood up, and both of them started walking together, following after Techno.
“Then get a new one?” Tommy replied. Surely this man was not this stupid.
“But that's such a hassle, why do all that if I can just go and sit on the couch? It's more comfortable than any chair will ever be.”
Tommy slowly turned his gaze up to Wilbur's face, giving him a look, before walking quicker to catch up with Techno.
“Oh come on! It's not that bad!”
Tommy ignored him. He figured he would deal with the dumbass later on when he had eaten and gooten the fuck out of the loud caffeteria.
The group all stepped onto their own floor a few minutes later, and the two heroes got out their own lunches from the kitchen before they all made themselves comfortable on the couch.
Some time into their lunch, Phil came out of his office and joined them with his own lunch.
The rest of Tommy's day consisted of a full tour of the building and the floors by Phil, including a tour of the now-empty, cafeteria so Tommy could see where all the different food was.
All in all, his first day went surprisingly well. He was getting along with - almost all, not Wilbur - his coworkers, and no one suspected a thing from Tommy.
As Tommy finished his day, he met up with his roommate and they both went home together, Tommy going on and on about how his day had been.
