Chapter Text
It seems that as as late as the time during the early days of the Period of Ancient Sorcery in one particular world, it seemed that the people in some other worlds were wondering where the almighty one had went. Then, as a few stories go, one person got the fortune of entering a conversation with Marle, the deity speaking to them through telepathy. She told this person about Squares and that she had stopped traveling to tend to him. That was the last anyone heard of her...for a long time, at least.
It did not help that by the time it was late into the Period of Ancient Sorcery, prior history in that world became prehistoric, most of it lost to time.
Marle's relationship with Squares...wasn't quite the best. Sure, she really loved him and wanted to raise him, but she was rather ill-prepared to take care of a young deity she brought into existence. She was duty-bound into watching over the worlds for hours at best to days on end at worst. She had very little time to spend with her younger brother. It did not help that, among the other things she taught him, she never got to elaborate on his role - something that might have helped in the long run.
At this point, one of the worlds Marle was interested in was in the middle of changing times. That world, in particular, was in an era of legends and ancient magic. Possibly one of the busiest eras at that moment: one new part of that world was created (albeit, on accident), and people in a technologically advanced city for its time have took notice of a demon that had suddenly appeared.
Marle figured she needed to change too...but she really wasn't sure about how, or what to change.
But then she noticed something. Particularly with the clothes the people there were wearing.
She could have sworn that most people were wearing simple-looking outfits. Now a good chunk of them had more complex clothing. She had always wondered about the concept of change, a concept she has seen many times over.
It has been ages since she's been wearing that dress. It might already be time for a change.
So, one day, she headed to "the Far Edge" where Squares rests while he isn't attending to his duties. She knew he didn't like the idea of change, so it would be rude of her to just go change things without his knowledge, especially when it comes to his things as she would need his approval...something she never often gets with him.
It might not hurt to ask anyway.
The Far Edge of Two Worlds, in spite of its sole resident having no desire towards change, looked quite different from when he was first created. The most notable thing was that there was some sort of floating throne now. The conservative boy was sitting on the edge of the platform, admiring his new throne from a distance. He had not yet realized that a throne was like a chair just yet.
Marle made light steps as she approached her brother, the boy feeling her presence and turning around with a curious look.
"Please excuse me, Squares..." Marle began. "But I have something to ask of you...b-but I know how you feel about change, so I just wanna make sure if-"
As she spoke, he simply gave a disappointing glare and turned back around.
"Wait, please hear me out!" She shouted.
Squares gave a sign of annoyance as he glanced his sister again. "What is it...?"
"So...I've been seeing people with different-looking clothes recently..." The girl began. "And I figured I could change our clothes. I just wanted your permission."
He simply stared fora while, before asking her, "What do you mean?"
"We've been wearing the same outfits since our individual creations. It has been a long time, and..." Marle was getting nervous as she went on.
He only tilted his head in confusion. He had not seen as much as his sister did. "...You said people had been wearing different clothes, right?"
Now quite curious, Squares followed Marle out into the main part of their realm. He wondered what she meant by changing their clothes. It was when they reached a certain point in the realm when she began to prepare.
"Ready?" She asked her brother. He gave a slight nod in obligation.
Marle raised a hand, a light appearing in its palm. Soon, the two of them became enshrouded in a light that was so blinding, it would have rivaled the time light first entered this realm. The brightness only lasted for several hours.
When the light finally faded, the duo looked radically different from how they once were. Marle now wore a cyan short-rimmed dress with a white, interconnected ring pattern at the rim of the dress' skirt. What appeared to be either stockings or tights covered her legs, colored white with some cyan dots placed in a few places on the piece of clothing with dark lines connecting them, and black shoes with a magenta dot on the tongue. White gloves were now on her hands, and a white cloud adorned her head, the cowlick that was peeking out of it having been curled up. Her hair tendrils on the sides have also been raveled in the same fashion, and the back of her hair was now a segmented ring of interconnected spheres that somewhat resembled braids.
Squares' outfit had changed too, now wearing a black robe with purple square patterns on the sides, as well as another pattern on the front. The inside of his robe was red, and the bottom had square-shaped holes alongside patches of cloth floating very close to the rim as if defying gravity. His gloves felt different, there were white bands on his wrists that had a castle pattern on them to which he could not tell if they were the cuffs of his gloves or the ends of his robe's sleeves. He now had white pants and heeled shoes that just seem to be fused with his new pants and tipped wit a black square pattern with a purple square in the middle. Around his neck is a white gorget, which appeared to be made of cloth and had the same castle pattern as his wristbands. His once messy hair was straightened and shortened into what looked to be a choppy pixie cut, although his cowlick looked no different from before.
Marle beamed at Squares as she asked "Well, do you like it?"
He was trying to get used to the feel of his new outfit. "Well..." He stated, before pausing a little. "It...It's something." He adjusted the neck of his gorget to make his mouth more visible.
Following this moment, the duo remained together in peace. They had discovered things together througought the course of milenia. New languages, including English to which they now speak to this day. New worlds, and new things within the worlds they already knew. Particularly, the game now known as "Puyo Puyo".
They were content with each other. They coexisted.
Until one particular day...
