Chapter Text

~World of Legacy~

August 15, 1993/Diagon Alley, London England

Harry sighed as he entered the lobby of the bank, and Lord and Lady Evans spoke to each other while Malachi and Marcus watched them. Part of him wanted to tell Marcus that they were brothers, but the goblin had made it clear that that wasn't ideal. Marcus would be told by the goblins next summer; until then, Harry couldn't offer any proof of his words, and the official members of House Potter were so well known that the chances of him being believed were slim. Besides, he should give Marcus a normal year to learn magic before pulling him further into the mess that was his life. Suddenly feeling mischievous, he snuck up behind Marcus to ruffle his hair, causing the boy to start and quickly turn to talk to Harry. With less ease than he would have liked, Harry caught the scowling first year before smiling at Malachi and the now laughing adults.

“All ready to go, Harry? She asks.

“Yes, ma’am,” Harry answers. Ignoring the first year, he is now trying to climb him.

“I call dibs.” The first-year shouts as the family and Harry start making their way out of the bank.

“Dibs on what?” Harry answers, slightly tickling his brother's sides.

“Dibs on the first store. Malachi said you’ve never been shopping outside of Diagon Alley. So I’m calling dibs on where to take you first.”

“Alrighty then, my fearless tour guide. Where are we going first?” He asks, glancing at Lord and Lady Evans.

“The puzzle shop!” Marcus exclaims, grabbing Harry’s arm to drag him down the street. Malachi is quick to catch up with them.

“Mum and Dad said we can walk on our own, but we can’t go into the shop until we catch up. Turning left instead of right at the bottom of the steps of Gringotts, they pass the few shops Harry recognizes from previous visits before they pass a couple he doesn’t. Beyond the 3rd shop Harry doesn’t recognize, the entire street seems to open up in front of them. He glances at Malachi to make sure he’s not dreaming all this up and sees the boy smile. “Welcome to the center of the Great Square. The heart of Wizarding shopping in London.”

Harry turns around, trying to take it all in as Marcus and Malachi watch him wordlessly. “This is amazing!” he declares. At 11, Diagon Alley had screamed magic at him. Now after a week it seems a bit bland, but this was true magic. The shop to his right was 3 stories tall and had a personal thunderstorm raining down over top of it. Next to it stood a shop declaring Divination remedies for the lost witch or wizard. The top of the building seemed to be one giant glass-looking ball that sparkled and spun, changing colors every couple of minutes. Shops that changed colors, stands that told you their wares, a chocolate store made out of actual chocolate. All this and more surrounded Harry as he looked around.

“Are you done yet.” Marcus asked finally interrupting his awed wonder.

He smiled even as Malachi roughly poked Marcus in the side. “Why don’t you lead me to this puzzle shop it sounds exciting.”

“It’s the best!” Marcus exclaimed, "the whole shop is one giant puzzle, you never walk into the same store twice.” Harry glanced up and shared a smile with Malachi as Marcus rambled on about the puzzle shop.

“So, what is the great square?” Harry asked.

“It’s the wizarding largest shopping area in Britian, that’s not in a physical Realm, or on a private hundred.”

“I see,” Harry said walking past a pet shop whose front took the chance to morph from a kneazle to a crup in front of him.

“So there’s Diagon Alley running from northeast to southwest, about halfway down the street Between the North East Corner, and the square we just passed through is Visionary Street. Halfway between it and the center is Knockturn. Halfway between Knockturn, and Visionary is the Leaky Cauldron entrance.” Malachi said quickly.

“The Northeast Center side of Daigon has all the main Hogwarts shops for the muggleborn walkthroughs. It usually takes a few years before they explore any further than that. The Northeast Corner side of Diagon has the factory district Honeydukes has their main factory over there. The Northern End of visionary street is dedicated to Divination and its various methodologies, Mom picked me up my tarot cards from over there. The Diagon Vision junction is fun, it has a bunch thing to do. A couple of parks, a playground, the huge games center, the public flying area, a branch of the public library and one of the underage casting arenas is over there.”

“Public casting arena?”

“Yeah, the wards around Diagon prevent the trace, but officially if you’re caught casting outside of the regulated areas you can still get in trouble. But the square has eight casting arenas where you can cast spells all you so long as they aren’t harmful, they have practice rooms with dummies to practice your defense spells on. And starting the last week of June after all the schools let out the eight Arena’s run 3 summer long dueling competitions.”

“Malachi won the Emerald Arena’s Mid-summer competition.” Marcus chimed in.

“Oh, does the specific arena matter?”

“Yep,” Marcus interrupted Malachi before he could speak. “Emerald is the hardest, Azure is the second. Saphire is the third, and Topaz is the 4th.” he said excitedly.

“Well, I’ll have to check them out then.” Harry smiles back. He glances back up and sees a giant box in front of them. The way it’s painted, and it moves, makes him think of that rotating muti-colored cube puzzle that Dudley had broken within 2 hours of getting it.

“Are we all ready then.” Lord Evans excitedly says from behind them.

“The puzzle store is great fun. It can just be a bit confusing to get out sometimes, if you have a problem press the red button.” Lady Evans explains. As they exit the shop sometime later Harry has to agree, that had been tremendous fun. The entire store was one giant maze, that one had to complete different puzzles to access different areas and floors.

“Unfortunately, we do have plans with my parents for lunch, but we should be done about 2ish if you’re interested.” Lady Evans stops him after they leave the shop.

“That’s fine,” Harry said “do you happen to have a map? I can get some of my own personal shopping done. I’ll meet you back at the Leaky say at 3.”

“Wonderful” she says and with a quick flick of her wand a map lands in Harry’s hand. “Have fun and stay out of trouble.”

Harry nods as he watches the family walk away before looking down at the map. He instantly understands why it is called the Great Square; the entire shopping district is shaped like a square. The map is very cool with all the streets labelled, and everything. If he presses a finger to a certain street section, it will enlarge itself, and Harry can see the various stores, and vendors along the street. Nodding to himself, Harry heads back down Pheonix Boulevard where the Evans’s had left him, to the Center, once there he headed southwest down Diagon until he reached High St. Once there he was quick to locate a clothing store.

Entering the store, he is greeted with a call of “Merry meet, I’ll be right there.” Harry stays where he’s at next to the door for a few minutes until the sales witch enters the main room, she looks him, up and down and frowns. “What can I help you with young sir?”

“I just got full access to my trust fund,” he starts to explain and the woman nods, her face instantly loosening.

“A wardrobe more your station?” She asks, before he can continue. “A common occurrence the goblins must have had more activity in the heirs vaults this summer than they’ve had in years.” She mutters, the last bit.

“What do you mean?” Harry asks.

“I mean that you are the fifteenth Noble orphan of the last war that I’ve seen this summer, you’re the twelfth that just turned 13 and got access to your trust vault. House Rank?”

He hesitates a moment. “I’m not sure.” He answers, the woman looks at him in dismay for a moment before he quickly continues. “My parents were a triad and I inherited from both my sires.”

“Aah, both ranks then.”

“Most Elder, and Most Ancient.” She looks startled for a moment.

“Where is your steward?” She asks. He doesn’t answer, just looking at the door to the back room. “Very well then, colors, and styles?”

“No, idea, the ministry sent me to live with muggles, so I’ve never done this before.” She shrieks in surprise for a moment jumping back.

“What do you mean muggles?”

“Amanda,” a man snaps entering the room from one of the back rooms.

“Sorry, sir.” She mutters.

“Explain and then go on break, perhaps a calming potion will calm you down.

She nods. “Yes, sir. Muggle raised, full wardrobe, dual inheritance Most Elder, Most Ancient.”

“Very well then dismissed.” The man turned to focus on Harry. “Merry Met, young Heir.”

“Merry met, Sir”

“If you will follow me to the back room we will start on a full workup. Oberon, or Tatiana?”

“Hogwarts,” the man blinked, “usually the Hogwarts students go to the Diagon Store, it’s been ages since one entered via High Street. Regardless lets begin.”

The man who Harry discovered was Mr. Twilfit started with finding Harry’s preferred color palette. Greens, Blues, and Purples, Reds were alright provided they were a deeper burgundy style color. After tsking at him over his weight and his frame, the man settled on a slim built robe. At the end of the visit Harry left with 3 stain resistant shirt in both Black and White, and two each in a deep Red, dark Purple, Dark Grenn, and a Navy Blue. Three pants in each Navy, Black and Tan. Along with that he got a set of beginners dueling robes, and nine blue, purple, and dark Red Robes. One in each color in the open front style, and a winter and summer set of the robes in the closed front style. Though tremendously out of fashion he also got the closed front version of the Hogwarts robes, after he changed into one of the closed front summer robes. An Autumn cloak, and two Winter cloaks, with underthings finished out the order.

Mr. Twilfit also informed him that his measurements were on file, so that if something happened, and he needed to order more robes he could through Owl Order. He slipped the catalog prefilled with his account information into one of his ledgers. Then to his dismay mr. Twilfit had left the shop and walked him down to the shoe store two shops down, handing the man who greeted them a single card before he left. “Well then Merry Met, it seem Mr. Twilfit already did half my work, you ready to find some proper footwear?”

“I guess.” Harry said slightly confused.

Now between the two shops Harry left the shoe shop G100 poorer and three pairs of shoes heavier. But with clothes that not only fit but made him feel warm, and shoes that he didn’t have to worry about walking out of Harry was happy.

“Hello Wizard.” A squeaky voice said as Harry started walking Down High Street with his bags. Harry looked around for the voice. “Mipsy be helping little wizard with his shopping.”

Harry finally looked down to see a house elf. “What?” he asked.

“Mipsy be a square elf, Mipsy be taking you’s bags back to you’s room.” Now that Harry looked up and down the Street Harry noticed other elves popping to and from the street some had emblems of houses on their little tea cozies, but most like Mipsy had the same emblem as the map on theirs.

“Alright” he relented hesitantly not wanting to give up his brand-new clothes.

“Where’s little Wizard be staying?” the house elf asked, taking the bags from Harry.

“Room 4, the Leaky Cauldron.” And with that the House elf popped away before popping back. “On the bed, little Wizard, you be needin anything else.”

Harry shook his head and the elf popped away, pulling out the map Harry scanned it for his next shop, heading further up High street, he turned left to Horizont Alley and head West down the street.

Upon spotting the luggage shop he slipped inside. Stepping onto the show room floor, he was instantly captivated by the many trunk types, styles, and sizes. Just as the shopkeeper finished up with the other customer. Harry found the one he was pretty sure he wanted.

“aah, the crafter’s trunk, a masterpiece in the waiting are you certain that’s what you want?”

“Yes,” Harry answers.

“Very well, it’s a nine-compartment trunk with…”

“The Jr. scholars edition actually.” Harry interrupts.

“Oh, alrighty then, so we have the Jr scholar’s edition of the crafter’s trunk. Crafted House, eh?”

“Mastered,” Harry answered making the shopkeepers eyes widen a fraction.

“May I recommend the Sr. Scholar’s edition then. It still has the 1st compartment set aside for all your school essentials. You can even sort them according to subject, excellent for keeping all those notes together for the elective subjects. The second compartment is still the same for all your clothes and other such necessities. The differences come in the 3rd 4th and 5th compartments.”

“In the Jr.’s the 3rd compartment is an office, the 4th is a library, and the 5th you can select one of any of the prebuilt crafting spaces. In the Sr’s addition the 3rd compartment is a small studio apartment with kitchenette, for those times when you just lose track of time. The Fourth is also a library however, the base library for the Sr’s edition hold about 2500, while the Jr edition’s base library only holds 1000. While the Jr edition can be upgraded to the 2500, or 5000 book libraries, they are not linked to the crafting rooms. The Sr’s library is expandable to 250,000 books, and said expansion comes with auto sorting, auto shelving, and a search feature. The 5th room of the Sr trunk is an office and crafting space wherein you can choose 4 crafting options beyond the office.”

“The upsell is nice Andrew but he’s going to need the Master level scholars crafting trunk.” A man says interrupting the shopkeepers, explanation.

“Master level?” Harry asks.

“Don’t you think that’s a bit much Sir.” The shopkeeper stammers.

“Nope,” the man answers before focusing on Harry, “You may have your fathers look, but your stance is all Charlus. Except your eyes you have your mothers eyes. Fleamont brought your father in on his fifteenth birthday for his trunk, as Charleus had brought Fleamont. When Charlus was 13 he bought the jr size. It didn’t even last him till Christmas. He packed out the library enchantments. So, he came back and bought the Sr lv. The magic was too strong, he and his father brought it back over Ostara, the forge compartment couldn’t hold all the magic and it had exploded. After that I custom built the master level trunks specifically for the Houses that have gained the Masters Rank or higher. I received the order for it from your father just after the announcement of your birth.” The man says motioning Harry towards the back room.

“Nothing’s different in the first two compartments. The room, while still a studio, has full kitchen walk–in cold box, and pantry. Your pa sent me a couple trunks of books to pre-register into the library compartment. The compartment is set to hold 1 million tomes, sort and register them and all that jazz. The final compartment is my real pride and joy.” He says opening the trunk and motioning the stairs down. Harry is amazed as he steps into a full hallway. To the immediate right is the door to the studio compartment and to the left is the door to the library compartment. The second door on your right is a potions room. The third door on the right is an office space. The shelf links to the library, any pages stored in the desk will be linked to both the library and the school compartment. The fourth door on the right is empty. To the left we have the library, as I said, and three empty crafting spaces. At the end of the hall is two doors the right is to the primary enclosed forge, the door two the left leads to the secondary open-air forge.” Harry nodded going to the last doors and opening first the primary forge then the secondary forge door.

“I don’t see anything wrong with them, however I don’t have my first lesson with the goblins until Thursday.”

“Well if they’ve got any complaints you have one of’em bring the trunk to me and I’ll have it fixed to what they are teaching you before ya leave the bank.”

Exciting the trunk Harry asked. “How much do I owe you?”

“Not a knut, just step over to that wall along the north side out there and select yer four additional crafting rooms. The trunk can’t hold another forge, but any of the rest of ‘em it should handle fine. Yer pa paid for it in advance.” He closed the lid and Harry could see the emblem of house Potter one the front glancing at the other trunks Harry’s eyes fell on two additional trunks with the same emblem. “right shame what happened I had just gotten the books yer pa sent for them trunks all loaded in when I got the news. It was a sad day in the alley it was. Some places were celebraten, but others of us, we was mournin, your father was a good man, he should be with ya today.”

Harry blinked to keep the tears out of his eyes, before glancing at the trunks again. “Are they paid for?”

“Yeah, your father already knew the cost after payin for yers and ordered theirs just the same.”

“Either I’ll pick them up on Thursday or when the goblin comes to have mine fixed, could you have those one’s fixed to.”

“I suppose I jus might look after for a couple a kids bringing right similar trunks back as well.” At Harry’s look he stopped him from replying. “Suspicion is one thing, it’s more than my life’s werth to have that kinda info. There are lords who would kill to have such power over ya.”

“Thank you,” Harry says before heading to select his crafting rooms. After looking over all of them, Harry chooses to leave one as a storage room and having it linked to the other 3 crafting rooms and the potions room. For a small additional fee Harry has alternative doors installed into 2 of the three remaining doors, and a greenhouse into the 3rd crafting, being right next to the outside forge, the greenhouse can have both the outdoor and indoor option simultaneously. The other two crafting rooms alternate between a pottery/ceramics shop, (he already has a kiln in the forge area so doesn’t have to sacrifice another space for it), a sigils practice arena, an Arcane magics workshop, and a dueling room.

Harry leaves the shop feeling hungry but satisfied with his purchases. The man in the store, had recommended a place to eat off of Mystic alley, supposedly across the street was the best secondhand store in the entirety of the great square. After stopping for lunch, he heads on over to the secondhand shop.

“And what have we here?” The man behind the counter asks.

He instantly feels a tug on his magic and follows his instincts in his answer. “I’m not sure yet.”

“Hmm,” the man studies him. “Tell me little heir what do you wish to be? Hmm.”

“I want to be all that is required of me by my blood and magic.” Harry answers.

“Perhaps, perhaps you will be, or perhaps like the last it will consume you. Anything that does not have a price tag marked in red is open to your perusal.” The man says ominously, handing Harry a basket, and a small folder. “The trunks sets are display only, the one you receive is not guaranteed to have anything other than what is specified on the tag. If you wish to take the chance and purchase one, bring the tag to the front of the store, the folder is for you to store them in, price is accounted for on the tag, amount can be decided at the register no need for additional tags. The store is not responsible for the legality of anything purchased within.”

Harry nodded not quite understanding, before pushing beyond the front desk into the depths of the store. The store was a cross between Borgin and Burke’s and the secondhand shop the Weasley’s had shopped at last year. Near the back of the store Harry’s interest was caught by a series of glass cases. At the bottom of each glass case was an open standard trunk. On the shelves of the glass case was an assortment of books hanging in little sleeves onto the front of the case was five stacks of cards, the top card of the first pile read.

Book Box 1

250 randomized books

The second was much the same -

Book Box 2

500 randomized books

The third contained 750 books and cost G38. The fourth contained 1000 books and cost G50, the last option contained 5000 books and cost G150. Before Harry knew what he was doing he grabbed the Book Box 5 ticket. Harry sighed this store was messing with his magic. Half an hour later as he handed the small folder back and passed over the basket full of odd and in things his magic had made him grab he simply said don’t ask.

“Very well for four book box 5, 2 weapons box 2, 3 artifact box 4 and 5 miscellaneous box 5, comes out to 1558, and the miscellaneous artifacts com out to and additional G5 S7 and 3 knuts. For going with your instincts, it’ll cost you G1250 for the lot.”

Harry just held his hand out for the receipt that he pressed into the back of his trust vault ledger. It now read G35620. The man handed him a small bag. “They are currently shrunk; they will unshrink in about an about an hour. It takes about a half an hour from here to get back to the Leaky, our other location at the corner of Knockturn and Phoenix, may interest you in a few days. It’s a quarter after 2.”

Harry just sighs, resigning himself to having the weirdest day ever. Making it back to the leaky barely ten minutes before he’s supposed to meet with the Evan’s he drops the trunks onto the stairs of the fifth compartment and closes the lid, he’ll have time to sort them later.

The rest of the day and the next three is spent getting to know Malachi and building a relationship with Marcus while having fun all over the great square. On Sunday he went to see the Jr. dueler’s competition stage 1 finals for the Azure Arena. He couldn’t believe those were 3rd and 4th years, he was so trying to compete next year.

That evening in the Emerald Arena, he got to see Malachi compete in the Jr LV2 (4th and 5th) competition stage 1 finals to defend the title he had won in July. Marcus was pouting over the fact that as the league placement went off of the year you had just finished, he wouldn’t be able to compete for a whole 3 years. “2 and a half, 2 and a half years Harry.”

They went to the small magical amusement park that sat in the Square center every Sunday and Monday of the summer From 10 Am-10 Pm on Monday. Tuesday morning was spent signing hm up for a library card, the afternoon was spent exploring the various museums on Tranquility Lane. Wednesday was spent touring several of the various factories and warehouses along the edges of the great square. It was a sorrowful Harry who hugged Marcus as tightly as the boy hugged him back on Wednesday evening. “Can’t Harry come with us.” The boy asked for the 3rd time.

“I can’t.” Harry answered him finally letting go of Marcus before kneeling on the floor and pulling the boy into his lap. “You have to go to Oberon and I have to go to Hogwarts. But how about I make you a deal.”

“What deal?” Marcus said finally perking up.

Harry held out his arm, and Hedwig landed on it. “This is Hedwig, she’s my owl.”

“She’s pretty.” Marcus said. Hedwig looked at the boy, looked at Harry and started preening Marcus’s hair.

“If you write me a letter, I promise you Hedwig will find me or you to deliver it. So, here’s the deal.” Marcus looked at Harry. “I want to hear all about Oberon. I want to know all about what classes you love, and which you hate. I want to hear about your favorite teachers, and I want to hear all about your new friends. I want to hear about everything, after all how else, am I supposed to check up on my new little brother.”

Marcus gasps. “I’ll be the best little brother in the world, right Malachi?”

“I’m sure of it. Now head to bed or you won’t want to get up for the portkey in the morning.” Malachi answers. After one more hug the boy heads back to his parents’ room.

“Thank you, the age gap can be difficult sometimes. You bridged the gap nicely.”

“It was no problem, and the same thing I said to him goes for you too. Just because we go back to school doesn’t mean we have to stop being friends.”

“Gotcha, I’ve got a new little brother who’ll throw a fit if I don’t right.” Malachi says eyes laughing.

“You betcha,” Harry says before he tackles the older boy again.

After Malachi had headed back to the family’s room, Harry laid back on his bed thinking over the last few days. They had been some of the best he had ever had, with melancholy he had to admit it had been even better than last summer at the Burrow.a

Notes:

Well, here we are. It may not look it, really may not look it, but this started as a rewrite of POAM. Once I really started writing, however the ideas and guidelines I had for POAM sort of faded. This chapter and the next one seems to just be one huge info dump, and in all honesty, it sort of is. When I go back and edit later that may change, but these first few chapters begin to set up the greater worldbuilding we will see in this world and help me flesh out the world overall. World of Legacy is one of 3 fics set up in relatively the same sort of political, economic, and geographic world. As they are posted I will mark them as the same world. The general idea of magical levels and ranges are pretty com in the HP fanbase, but the idea for the specific ranges and level specifics, was taken from a Windsor at Hogwarts. While many of the other ideas you see going forward such as the hundreds, will come from various other fics such as Herukane’s Avalon series, The Avalon Seven, The Pendragon Family, and several other such fanfictions. Others are present but not mentioned due to a loss of name, and or authors for the individual fics. Rereading my POAM fic now my biggest issue was the speed in which I moved things and my shoddy explanation of how and why things were happening. The introduction of so many OC’s that where there but I never built the relationship that suddenly appeared. Which is part of the reason it was so difficult to finish, as several of the events that where to happen going forward just felt wrong, as the relationships that triggered them, or that they were the result of never happened in the text but in the ephemeral off-screen way. It didn’t really work. As a first writing it is good, but it certainly has taught me a few things. With that being said let’s take a journey into an idea that has culminated from three different fic ideas and merged into one massive expanding world.
I hope you like and enjoy the story. I'm going to try and Publish every two weeks for this one but make no promises as my goal for the month of November is just to write as much as possible of this fic. If I reach 20,000 words in the next 2 weeks (or sooner), I will post but I won't promise any else.
