Chapter Text

After a few minutes of watching Daikoku lashing out against Yato, she noticed that Yukine had emerged from the attic. His hair disheveled, like Yato’s from earlier, and he had a glare on his face. He looked tired like he had woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

Offering a friendly smile, Hiyori nodded towards his way as he sat at the table. “Good morning, Yukine-kun.” she greeted.

He propped his elbow on the table and leaned his head against the palm of his hand. “Morning.” he responded a bit quietly.

It was understandable since all of them did spend all night awake and partying. They were all bound to be tired. Especially the ones who had drank throughout the night. Luckily Hiyori and Yukine weren’t old enough so they were hangover free.

“Morning, Yukine-kun.” Yato also greeted yet he didn’t receive an answer.

For a couple of minutes they exchanged small talk about miscellaneous things. It all was paused as Kofuku had suddenly sat right in between Hiyori and Yato.

She looked the opposite of how everyone around Hiyori looked. Instead of distraught and tired, she was refreshed looking and well rested.

“Good Morning!” She greeted happily as everyone greeted her back the same way. “Hiyorin, won’t you get us some coffee?”

With a nod and a smile, Hiyori got up from the table and walked herself into the kitchen. As she arrived, she decided to take her time to regain her composure.

It wasn’t as easy as it looked staying in the same room where her newfound crush sat next to her. Especially when acting as if she didn’t have these feelings. They were confusing, her feelings, since she couldn’t tell what exactly it was.  Even worse so that she realized these special feelings while staring at Yato’s face while thoughts of their shared kiss, from the night before, ran through her mind.

Yet she knew that she had to take some sort of action. Although it might ruin their friendship she wanted to get these feelings off her chest. The fear of not knowing what may happen was greater than her fear of being rejected.

So she decided that she would tell him. She would do it with the passion she felt and no fear stopping her from doing so.

After sorting things out in her mind, she decided to go back. To not worry them any longer and so that they could all have their coffee to wake them up.

She grabbed the coffee pot and a mental note to come back for some more mugs. As she was about to head out of the kitchen, something caught in her ear. A word from Yato’s mouth and it stemmed the memory of last night.

Not moving from her spot, she decided to eavesdrop some more.

“Yes, Yatty, how was the kiss with the Hiyorin? Did you like it?” She asked, using a childish, mischievous tone.

A few moments of a pause. “Uh, I, uhm.”

Kofuku giggled. “C’mon, Yatty! I know you love her.”

The only thing that sounded afterwards was a bang on the table. “Me and Hiyori are just friends.” Yato replied, a little defensive sounding.

However, that sentence got stuck inside Hiyori’s mind. Repeating the last two words over and over again. She leaned against the wall as her heart pounded against her chest and soon her hold on the coffee pot lessened dramatically. Causing a crash on the ground.

She had only realized what had happened as she heard the sound of glass shattering. In that moment, she was surprised in more ways than one.

Soon she hurried to the ground getting onto her knees to pick up the broken glass. Her heart beat increased and her emotions were getting the best of her.

At that exact moment, Daikoku had ran in with Kofuku just behind him. He walked upon the sight of Hiyori on the kitchen floor picking up the shards and crying silently. He was about to ask what had just happened but soon Kofuku had spoken the words.
“What happened, Hiyorin?”

Hiyori leaned back up so she could pick up her head to look up. Her cheeks stained with wetness and her eyes a slight red. “N-Nothing, my hand slipped.” she said, a smile soon adorning her once saddened expression.

No questions were asked despite everyone knowing that she was clearly upset. So Daikoku went to fetch a broom. He calmly told her that she didn’t need to clean it up since it wasn’t her fault.

She got up from the floor and wiped the tears away. She walked silently out of the kitchen and heard a worried Yukine talk after her.

“Hiyori, are you okay?” he asked. His eyebrows pinched together as he talked.

Not once did she look at him. “I’m alright, Yukine. I just feel a little sick. I should go home.” she stated with a slight wavering voice.

Hiyori immediately grabbed her coat and while Yato barely uttered the words “Wait.” she had left. She walked herself home on her usual route.

Many times she had walked this same route from school or to home. All the time wanting to, or waiting to, see Yukine and Yato. This sidewalk held such happy, and sometimes dark, memories. And now she was staining that with sad ones.

Since she was alone now she could let her tears go down freely. Silently and not a single sound was made from her. She didn’t cry a lot, but when she did it was very concealed and about important things.

After the long tedious walk, she had finally gotten home. Her parents had been gone to company party hosted by her father at the hospital he worked at. So she was home alone and she was glad that she was.

She didn’t want anyone to bother her or ask why she looked the way she did. It would be embarrassing and humiliating to share these feelings since she found them to be silly. Although it was quite important to her, but her family wouldn’t understand that.

Heading up the stairs, she turned towards her room and closed the door behind her. She shook off her pink colored jacket and set it neatly on her chair at the desk.

As she got herself comfortable, she plopped herself onto the bed. Her tears still flowed down at the sides of her face gathering slightly at her ears. The corner of hers stung from crying so much and a lump in her throat started to form.

At that moment she decided to make a promise. One that she was determined to keep. To distance herself and get rid of these feelings. Only then she could forget that all of this had happened.

This was her new year’s resolution.

“Wai-” Yato barely warned as he saw Hiyori shut the door behind her. Leaving the house of Kofuku’s without saying any sort of goodbye. He could only watch in awe and his hand in mid air as he was trying to stop her.

Putting that hand back at his side now, he took a deep breath. He couldn’t understand what had gotten into her. He was confused for the most part, but there was no denying that he felt incredibly worried. Perhaps more worried than he should be.

A slight growl snapped him out of the shocking moment and he quickly turned his head to hear Daikoku barking orders at him. However, he wasn’t going to listen so he got up from the table and walked up towards the attic.

As he walked inside, he immediately plopped onto the futon he usually slept on. The same one that he and Hiyori had slept in last night. He couldn’t help to have his heart tense up a bit.

In his mind, he had a guilty conscious. He felt bad for practically hiding his feelings from everyone. He also felt responsible for the way Hiyori reacted. Perhaps she knew what he had said. That was something he thought about, but dismissed since he didn’t want to even think about the idea of him hurting her in that way.

All of this was suddenly knocked out of his mind as he heard someone come in. He propped himself up and saw Kofuku standing there. Her face looked worried and one hand was on the doorknob as the other was raised to her face.

“Yatty?” She asked, a tone matching her expression. “Are you okay? You seemed upset. So did Hiyorin.”

Looking away, Yato answered, “I think Hiyori will be okay. She did say she felt sick.”

He soon scooted himself off the futon and walked past Kofuku. “Me and Yukine have a job to do.”

As he walked downstairs, he called his shinki’s name and he followed him outside. The two left Kofuku and Daikoku wondering where they were going. It seemed as if everyone had been leaving that day and it was a mystery as to why. So they both just exchanged confused glances before dropping the thought.
