Chapter Text

Stella was sat lounging in the common room, music playing over the speakers. It was the radio station that always played 2000’s hits and she was too lazy to change it.

She was scrolling through her phone, waiting Peter to get back from Ned’s. She was nodding her head to the beat, her leg hanging over the side as she tapped her foot.

She was humming along to the familiar tune, unsure of the words but her distracted mind didn’t really care.

She heard the elevator ping and she refused to turn around in her slothful state, but she could tell who it was from the nagging tut.

She smirked, knowing the words and the actions that were coming next. Bucky walked up beside her and threw her foot off the back of the couch.

“How many times do I have to tell you to keep your dirty feet off the couch?” Bucky asked, an annoyed tone to his voice. “You’ll mark the leather, idiot.”

“Oops,” Stella quipped back, not looking as she continued to scroll through her phone. “My bad.”

“Rude and antisocial,” he replied, shaking his head. “That’s a bad look.”

“You’re a bad look,” she retorted, repositioning her legs. “So, hah.”

“God, you’re irritating,” he sighed, heading towards the kitchen. “What happened to that sweet girl I met all those years ago?”

“When was I ever sweet to you?” Stella snorted, refusing to look at him. “You said the other day that I’ve been irritating since the day I met you.”

“And I was right,” he called over his shoulder, and she laughed. “You want anything to eat?”

“Please,” she replied, smiling. “I just can’t seem to move off the couch.”

“The only reason I’m not dragging you off that couch is because you worked hard in training this morning,” Bucky said, exasperation clear in his voice. “Lazy shit.”

“That was both uncalled for and hurtful,” she laughed, sitting up in her spot. “It’s called resting, you should try it sometime.”

“Hilarious,” he added, and Stella could hear him rifling through cupboards. “I’ll make you a sandwich.”

“Thank you!” Stella smiled, shuffling to get more comfy. “I love you.”

“Whatever, doll,” he said, and Stella could hear his eye roll. “I love you too.”

She grinned, settling back in and lightly singing to the words playing over the speakers. It was Avril Lavigne’s ‘Sk8er Boi’ and she was whispering the lyrics as she scrolled, not paying full attention.

That was when she realised she wasn’t the only person singing, a second voice filled her ears and with a broad grin and wide eyes, she sat up.

Her head turned to the kitchen, watching in awe as Bucky sang along to the lyrics, spreading mayonnaise on some slices of bread.

She was silent, her eyes twinkling with joy as she looked at him, she felt her skin start to glow as she observed him.

Seeing Bucky so at ease, and singing to modern songs that she didn’t even know he would know. He was so content- so happy, and she couldn’t stop smiling as she gazed at him.

He perked his head up, seemingly feeling her eyes on him, he met her eyes and rolled his. His face flushed and he shut his mouth, shaking his head.

“No!” Stella cried, standing up. “Don’t stop singing!”

“Shut up,” he mumbled, blushing.

“No, Buck! Please!” Stella pleaded, putting her hands together and begging. “I’m sorry, I’m not embarrassing you! It’s just nice to see you so happy.”

“Don’t make it weird!” Bucky stated, laughing.

“But it’s so nice to see you so smiley and happy!”

“You made it weird,” Bucky snorted, shaking his head and finishing the sandwiches.

Stella pouted, and instead, turned her head to the ceiling.

“Friday, turn it up the volume,” she called.

“Stella, no!”

Stella laughed as the music blasted loud enough to hurt her ears, but she immediately started to scream the lyrics. Bucky shut his eyes, shaking his head as he laughed.

She grabbed his hands, jumping around as she sang wildly off-key. He winced and scoffed, before opening his mouth and started to sing the lyrics along with her.

He twirled her under his arm, smiling wildly as she laughed and shined. The sandwiches lay forgotten on the counter as they danced around, both unbelievably out of tune.

They heard the elevator arrive, and stopped for a second, and as Sam and Steve walked out, they smiled.

They immediately started up again, and Steve and Sam winced, covering their ears. Stella and Bucky laughed, running over and dragging them by the hands and jumping around them.

“You two are so weird,” Steve shouted over the music, rolling his eyes with a smile.

The song changed and ‘Unwritten’ by Natasha Bedingfield started to play, Stella laughed and immediately started to sing along.

Sam joined in and Stella grinned, and then to her immense surprise, Bucky picked up the song in the chorus.

“How do you know these songs?” Stella asked, her voice raw as she yelled.

“Well, you told me to learn more music, and I like the 2000s,” he smiled, as he grabbed Steve’s hands.

“That’s the decade you decide you like the most?” Sam sighed, stopping his dancing.

“I’m educating myself,” Bucky replied, frowning. “You should be happy for me.”

“We are,” Steve called, kissing his forehead. “Now, can someone turn this music down?”

“Okay, old man,” Stella snorted. “FRIDAY, turn it up even more!”

“Stella!”

Steve sighed, and then with a loud laugh, took her hands and spun her around and around. She laughed, and Sam and Bucky danced around each other, moving wildly with no rhythm.

She loved her strange family, she loved them all so much.
