Chapter Text
Kaoru Myogi was no longer a patient person.
Because Adachi was really, really annoying.
His request had been an insanely simple one. Since his boyfriend seemed to spend so much time hanging around Junes for no apparent reason, Kaoru asked him to pick up a bottle of lemonade since he’d just ran out. Just a single bottle of strawberry lemonade. That was it.
Adachi had bought the lemonade, technically. But he had also bought whatever the hell ‘brown lemonade’ was, and proceeded to drink half of the actual good lemonade on his walk home.
So maybe Kaoru snapped at him a bit. And maybe he tried his hardest to offer a genuine apology despite having the emotional and conversational skills of a rock. And maybe the asshole had decided to forgive him, under one condition.
“Just one game of Krunker, babe.”
…
So here he sat. Laying in bed and holding his phone distractingly close to his face, as Adachi sat at his desk using his work laptop to play Krunker Strike.
“Okay, I’ll dm you an invite code to join my Krunker Crew.” Kaoru instinctively sighed. It had already taken them an annoyingly long time to get him signed up for… Dicecord? Dimecore? Whatever it was. And he didn’t particularly feel like having to go through all of that again. “My display name is I Hate Women.”
“Of course it is.” Right on cue, he received a dm from I Hate Women, who, upon clicking the link in the message, Kaoru learned was only part of his profile. His real username was sexymisogynist69, which made him want to throw his phone at Adachi’s face. “Okay, I clicked it. I think I’m in…?”
“Nah. You gotta accept the server rules first.” Server??? What the hell was even happening? Sure enough, apparently Adachi had invited him to a server within the Krunker link. The server was named ‘The Bois’ with about a hundred ugly emojis. Kaoru wished he could be attracted to quite literally anybody else. He accepted the server rules, which he didn’t actually bother to read, and was then placed into a voice chat with Adachi as ‘Krunker Strike’ popped up on his screen in bold letters. He muted his phone so he wouldn’t have to hear more Adachi than necessary, then looked over at him for what to do.
“Press play when I do. We’ll get out in the same match.” Alright, simple enough so far. A bit disconcerting that there was no tutorial, though. He clicked on the play button at the bottom right of the screen, and within less than a full second, he was placed into a match.
Even looking at this thing was enough to give him an aneurysm. It looked like something one of the Investigation Scooby Gang or whatever members would’ve designed in a class period. Bright colors everywhere, usernames with a thousand numbers, and enough buttons to make him feel like a 90 year old man staring at a phone screen for the first time.
Kaoru wasn’t very good at video games, but he assumed that the small button in the bottom left with a bunch of bullets on it was the shoot button. And, in a game Adachi had described as a ‘shooter,’ he assumed that was a good thing. Though, nothing happened when he pressed the button.
“How do I shoot?” He asked, immediately getting shot and killed by someone from the other team with the beautiful username of BigFatPoop.
“Just press the shoot button,” he answered, which didn’t help at all. “What’s your username, babe? I’ll come protect you.” He wasn’t sure he wanted Adachi’s protection, but, hey, it was better to be safe than sorry. He couldn’t even figure out how to shoot, after all.
“I’m, uh…” he looked at the top of the screen for his automatically generated username. “AwkwardKoi7865.”
“Alright, on my way. I’m BurnTheGays420.”
“You are literally bisexual.”
“That makes it funnier.”
“Can you just come over here and krunk on these guys or whatever the fuck.”
“On my way, Kao.”
Within a few seconds, BurnTheGays420 showed up and shot a member of the enemy team dead fairly quickly. Kaoru tried to figure out how to actually shoot, but all he managed to do was accidentally jump off of the map.
“This is a flat map, Kaoru,” Adachi seemed equally impressed as he was disappointed. “How did you even do that?”
“No clue.” He sighed. “Now how do I shoot?”
“The shoot button!” He yelled, slamming his (Kaoru’s) keyboard as he died to someone named KrunkerKranch.
“The shoot button doesn’t do shit.”
“Well maybe you should play on PC.”
“I would if you weren’t fuckin’ hogging it.”
“I called dibs.”
“You can’t call dibs on my laptop.”
“Yes I can.”
“No you can’t.”
“Yes I can.”
“No you can’t.”
“Yes I can.”
“No , you c—Oh.” Kaoru cut himself off as the game read ‘DEFEAT’ in giant gray letters.
“Good job, Kao,” Adachi said sarcastically, rolling his eyes. “You made me lose my winning streak.”
“Your streak of what, exactly?”
“One.”
“Yeah, that's about what I expected.” Kaoru turned his phone off and set it down, taking a deep breath. “Do you forgive me for snapping at you now?”
“No.” Just as Kaoru was about to throw his phone at him, he continued. “Just kidding. Not sure I can forgive you for being so bad at Krunker, though.”
“I can live with that.” Despite everything, he found himself smiling. Just slightly. “Oh, yeah, can I have my lemonade now?”
“Of course.” Adachi grabbed the plastic Junes bag off of the floor and pulled his half-drinken strawberry lemonade out of it. “Catch.” He tossed it to Kaoru, who thankfully managed to grab it mid-air.
“Thanks.” He went to remove the cap of the bottle and down it all in a single gulp before he took a closer look at the outside of it. “…This is my favorite brand.” He turned the bottle around in his hands. He hadn’t asked Adachi to get him any specific brand of lemonade, only that it was strawberry flavored. Had he remembered something so specific about him, or had it just been a lucky guess? “How’d you know?”
“Lucky guess,” Adachi answered, though Kaoru had his suspicions. This brand was more expensive than the others, and was usually closer to the back of the shelves from what he remembered from his limited trips to Junes.
Well, whatever. He took the cap off and started chugging, ignoring that the idea of Adachi remembering his favorite lemonade brand made his heart skip a beat in his chest. Once he had finished drinking he went to ask Adachi another question, but found that he was back to playing Krunker.
Kaoru sighed again. But lovingly this time.
