smart with math but stupid with love

Chapter 6: Enid meets her in-laws when Wednesday doesn't know they are dating

Notes:

my brain rot is back!
basically everyone in this chapter thinks that Enid and Wednesday are dating except Wednesday herself.
the chapters have such stupid titles so that you understand what timeline it is on. Even so, I have made an outline in the initial notes of the fic just in case

(Set somewhere in the events of chapter 2, before Pugsley’s chat and before Enid and Wednesday talk about the misunderstanding)

Chapter Text

“My parents are coming this weekend. Would you like to come with us?”

That was the last thing Enid expected to hear on a random Thursday when she came home from class. Wednesday Addams, her roommate, her best friend, and for an undetermined amount of time, her girlfriend, was inviting her to spend the day with her family.

“Do you want me to go to dinner with you and your parents?”, she asked in disbelief.

“Why would I ask you otherwise?”, Wednesday replied with a confused frown.

She crossed her arms waiting for a response, while Enid bit her lip nervously.

“But is that okay?”, asked the blonde, “Introduce me to your parents and stuff”.

“How were we going to have dinner together without introducing you first?”, Wednesday huffed, rolling her eyes. “Honestly, sometimes you have the most unlikely ideas”.

Wednesday grabbed her things and left, leaving Enid stunned in the center of the room. Okay, okay. She was only going to meet her girlfriend's parents, her in-laws. It wasn't a big deal.

Everything was fine.

Everything was not fine.

Enid had washed her hair twice, changed her clothes three times (even after considering at least fifteen suitable options), and was now desperately searching for her gold eye shadow, which she was sure she had left on the bathroom shelf, but it wasn't there, and why did she have to be such a mess right now-

“Enid, what is all the fuss about?”, Wednesday asked with her arms crossed from her desk.

She had been ready for a few minutes and had decided to sit down, seeing that the blonde still had a while left to be ready to go out.

“I can't find my gold eye shadow, have you seen it?”, asked Enid, anxiously rummaging through the bathroom cabinet.

"It’s at your desk," the brunette replied unimpressed.

Thank goodness her girlfriend was a functional being.

"You're more chaotic than usual", Wednesday said, leaning on the bathroom threshold as she watched Enid finish putting on her makeup. “Why is that so?”

“I'm super nervous, duh!”, Enid sputtered as she applied the shadow. “I'm going to meet your parents!”

“I understand that they are complicated people”, the shorter girl sighed. “If you don't like their company, you are free to leave at any time”.

“Your parents are great!”, Enid whined while she smoothed her hair once more, “What I'm afraid of is that they won't like me ”.

“Why wouldn't they like you?”, Wednesday scowled.

“Because, well, you guys are cool and smart and, I’m just, uhm, me, and well, I dunno-”, the blonde mumbled, walking past her and picking up the purse she had on her bed.

“Enid, first of all, I have already told you a hundred times that you think too little of yourself”, Wednesday responded with an intense look, following her to her room. “And second, there is nothing to worry about as they already love you”.

“How do they love me if they don't even know me?”, Enid scoffed.

“From the first moment I mentioned you, they have been nothing but eager to meet you”.

“What?”, Enid squeaked. “You’ve told them about m-?”

Wednesday couldn't answer because a notification rang from her phone that was on her desk.

“They have arrived”, she announced looking at the screen.

Oh God.

Wednesday put the phone in her pocket and walked over to Enid, taking her hand in hers to stop the anxious blonde from fidgeting.

“Does this help?”, she asked.

“Hm, yes”, Enid hummed. “A lot, actually”.

Wednesday shifted position to intertwine their fingers.

“Then I won't let go of your hand the entire time”.

They met the Addams in Jericho Square, where they were waiting for them to go to the restaurant all together. Everything they wore was black and extremely elegant. Enid felt self-conscious of her outfit for the umpteenth time that evening.

“Mother, Father, this is Enid”, Wednesday deadpanned.

Morticia and Gomez shared a look as they saw their intertwined hands.

“Um, hi, it's very nice to meet you”, Enid said shyly, letting go of her girlfriend's hand to offer Gomez a firm handshake.

“It's splendid to finally meet you, pequeña!”, the man said with a wide smile.

“Are you okay with hugs, dear?”, Morticia asked Enid, smiling softly when she approached her. “If not it’s fine, just wanted to check first”.

“Yeah, I love hugs actually”, Enid smiled back, as she accepted the woman's soft, motherly hug.

“Why didn't you say so sooner?”, Gomez asked, giving her a big hug and pats on the back.

“I-I was trying to be, uhm, formal?”, Enid said with a sheepish smile.

“There's no need!”, the man laughed, “You're family!”

When the introductions were finished, Wednesday took a very blushing Enid's hand again, giving her a reassuring squeeze. They walked to a cozy bistro at the outskirts of town.

“And what is your visit due to?”, Enid asked once they were on the table. “New Jersey is not exactly close to Jericho”.

“We had some business down in Boston”, Gomez said, “and we couldn't not stop by to see our little carnivorous plant on our way back”.

Wow, Jericho was not on the way from New Jersey to Boston at all.

“Anyway, how is everything going, girls?”, asked Morticia.

“Uneventful”, Wednesday hummed.

Enid chuckled, that was such a Wednesday response. Although it was true, after everything that happened the previous year, this year was being kinda “boring”. She nodded in agreement.

The waiter came to ask them for their order and soon the dishes arrived. Enid was still nervous, but happy, it seemed like everything was going smoothly.

“We've been looking forward to meeting you, Enid,” Gomez smiled at her as he cut his steak, “Wednesday has told us a lot about you.”

“You’ve-you’ve told them about me?”, the blonde murmured as she tried not to choke con her chicken marinara.

“Of course”, Wednesday scoffed as she rolled her eyes, like it was something obvious. “You've been driving me crazy for months, I had to at least inform them of the causes of my imminent madness”.

Enid blushed heavily. Wednesday was very weird, but she could be so romantic sometimes. That she was driving her crazy? Enid had been crushing on her since she entered her room, and had been completely in love with her for months.

“Well, the feeling’s incredibly mutual, Wends”, she chuckled as she squeezed Wednesday's hand under the table.

The brunette narrowed her eyes briefly but didn’t say anything. Neither did Morticia and Gomez, but they shared another look.

The rest of the dinner passed normally, Enid telling them about what she did in the many clubs she was signed up for, and Morticia and Gomez telling her what life was like in Nevermore when they were students.

After dinner, they left the girls back at school and they said goodbye with another round of hugs, getting in the hearse right away, so that the trip back to New Jersey wouldn't be thatlong.

Wednesday didn't let go of her hand the entire way.

“Your parents looked at each other a lot, like, in a very specific way at times, was that because they were judging me or something?”, Enid asked a little nervously as they climbed the stairs of Ophelia Hall.

“No, I know their judgmental looks”, Wednesday replied.

Wednesday was an observant person, and after so many years with her family she knew each of the tell-tales of each one, including the secret and conspiratorial language with which her parents sometimes spoke, only with looks.

“So what did they mean?”, Enid insisted. “You saw those looks too, right?”

Correction: Wednesday knew every one of her parents' tell-tales and secret language of looks, except those looks. She had never seen them before, directed at anyone else, much less at her.

She decided that like the rest of the things that concerned her parents, she didn't care in the slightest. Besides, racking her brains trying to figure out what those looks were about wasn't going to reassure Enid, which was the current task she had at that moment.

“Stop second readings and accept that my parents have been completely enthralled by your presence. I assure you there is nothing for you to worry about”, Wednesday huffed, taking off her coat as she entered the room. “It was meant to happen, you and my parents getting along, so when you come to my house in the summer you will be able to stop having tachycardias like you seemed to have this evening before going out”.

Enid almost tripped as she took off her shoes.

“Do you want me to come to your house in the summer?” Enid asked, perplexed.

“Of course”, the brunette frowned, “I thought it was implied”.

“You hadn't told me anything and I thought you were enjoying your time alone there”, Enid pointed out, sitting at her desk to remove her makeup.

“While that's partly true, I have to admit that after torturing Pugsley for a month can get monotonous”, replied Wednesday from the bathroom, where she emerged in record time with her braids combed again and her pajamas on. “And… you're the only presence I tolerate”, she added with a huff.

Enid stopped mid-wipe, and turned around mid-removing her makeup (which must have been a stupid image, but she didn't care)

“Sooooo is that your way of saying you like spending time with me?”, she asked with a singy voice and the goofiest grin on her face.

“You can read between the lines whatever you want”, Wednesday replied, rolling her eyes.

Her girlfriend had just invited her to spend the summer with her and her in-laws adored her. Enid felt like the luckiest girl in the world.
