Chapter Text

The two weeks leading up to the Singapore Grand Prix unfolded with a newfound rhythm in Amelia’s life, a cadence largely dictated by Daniel Ricciardo’s unwavering support. Daniel's presence became a beacon of stability amidst the turbulence, providing both practical assistance and profound emotional comfort.

Each day, Daniel seamlessly adjusted his schedule to accommodate Amelia’s unpredictable work shifts. Whether her shift was during the day, evening, or night, Daniel was always there, his punctuality a small yet meaningful anchor in Amelia’s chaotic world. Their fleeting moments together were transformed into cherished escapes from reality—impromptu dinners at cozy local bistros and tranquil walks in the park infused their lives with a semblance of normalcy and joy.

Margaret, the elderly nanny, was visibly relieved by Daniel’s consistent help. “You’ve been a true blessing, Daniel,” she would often say with heartfelt sincerity. “The assistance you’ve given us is invaluable.”

Daniel’s days with Leo were filled with light and laughter. They embarked on playful adventures, crafting elaborate forts from blankets and engaging in spirited games of hide-and-seek. One sunny morning, as Daniel and Leo were deeply immersed in a game of pretend—Leo as a fearless explorer and Daniel as his loyal sidekick—the unexpected sound of keys turning in the lock interrupted their play.

Curious and slightly alarmed, Daniel went to answer the door, only to find Max Verstappen standing on the threshold. Max’s expression registered a mixture of shock and discomfort as he took in the scene before him.
“Max?” Daniel said, his surprise evident.

Max, momentarily taken aback, stepped inside hesitantly. “I didn’t expect to see you here,” he admitted, attempting to mask his unease. “Is Amelia around?”

“No, she’s at work,” Daniel replied cautiously. “What are you doing here?”

“I wanted to see Leo,” Max said, glancing around the apartment. “Is that okay?”

“Of course,” Daniel said, stepping aside to let Max in. He watched as Max knelt down to greet Leo, a smile breaking across his face. The sight of Max playing with his son brought a mix of emotions for Daniel—he was glad to see Leo happy but also aware of the tension that had built between them.

Max spent a good amount of time with Leo, tossing him in the air and making him laugh. The little boy was overjoyed to have his papa back, his giggles echoing through the apartment. Daniel couldn’t help but smile at the sight, but he also felt the weight of the unresolved feelings between Max and Amelia.

However, as time passed, Leo began to sense that Max was leaving soon. “Papa!” Leo cried out, reaching for Max with tears in his eyes. “No go!”

Max’s heart twisted at the sight of his son crying. He knelt down, pulling Leo close. “I have to go, buddy. I’ll come back soon, I promise,” he said, his voice thick with emotion.

Leo continued to cry, his little face scrunching up in distress. “No go, Papa! Stay!”

“Leo, please,” Daniel chimed in, trying to soothe the situation. “Let’s not upset Papa, okay? He’ll be back to see you.”

Max felt helpless, watching Leo struggle with the emotions of separation. He pulled him into a tight hug. “I love you, Leo. I’ll be back before you know it,” he whispered, placing a gentle kiss on Leo’s forehead.

After a few more moments of comfort, Max reluctantly stood up, his heart heavy. “I should really go.”

Daniel tried to lighten the mood. “Why don’t you come with me and pick up Amelia after work? It could help with Leo’s transition.”

Max shook his head. “No, I’ll just... I’ll figure it out. Thanks, Daniel.” And with that, he turned to leave, glancing back at Leo one last time, who was still sniffling.

As Max closed the door behind him, Daniel looked down at Leo, who was now looking more upset than ever. “Hey, how about we go pick up Mommy? That might make you feel better,” Daniel suggested gently.

Leo, still tear-streaked but hopeful, nodded. Daniel took his hand, and together they set off for the hospital to collect Amelia. He hoped that the outing would offer a small respite from the day’s emotional upheavals.

At the hospital, Daniel held Leo securely in his arms as they waited. When Amelia finally emerged, her tired eyes brightened at the sight of her son.

“Mommy!” Leo called out, reaching eagerly for her.

Amelia scooped him up, her heart swelling with affection. “Hey, my love! Did you have fun with Daniel today?” she asked, her eyes briefly meeting Daniel’s.

“Leo missed Papa,” Daniel said quietly, his tone reflecting the gravity of the earlier visit.

Amelia’s expression softened as she looked at Leo. “Oh, sweetheart,” she murmured, rubbing his back soothingly. “Let’s head home, okay? We’ll spend some quality time together.”

As they made their way back to the apartment, Daniel sensed the underlying sadness in Amelia’s demeanor. He wished there was more he could do to help her navigate the complex emotions surrounding Max’s presence.

Later that evening, after a quiet dinner, Amelia and Daniel sat together in the living room, Leo playing contentedly with his toys. Amelia looked over at Daniel, a look of quiet gratitude on her face.

“So, Max came by today,” Daniel began cautiously. “He wanted to see Leo.”

Amelia’s eyes widened in surprise. “Really? What did he say?”

Daniel nodded. “He mentioned that after a tough start to the season, he felt compelled to see his lucky charm—Leo—after his podium finish in Belgium. It was an emotional visit for him.”

Amelia’s expression softened, a mix of relief and melancholy in her eyes. “I’m glad he came, even if things are complicated between us. It’s important for Leo to see his father, even if only briefly.”

Daniel nodded in agreement. “It was a tough moment for Max, but I think it meant a lot to both him and Leo.”

Amelia sighed, her gaze drifting to Leo, who was now happily absorbed in his toys. “Thank you, Daniel. Your support has been a lifeline for us during these difficult times.”

Daniel offered her a reassuring smile. “Anytime, Amelia. I’m here for you and Leo, no matter what.”

As the evening settled into a comfortable quiet, Amelia felt a renewed sense of gratitude for the support surrounding her. With Daniel’s steadfast presence and a small measure of hope, she faced the uncertain days ahead with a sense of resilience and calm.
