Chapter 4: A Fresh Perspective

Summary:

This was based on a prompt to write something from the perspective of a side character! Henrietta turned out to be very fun to write, I might have to keep her around lol.

TWs: cult stuff, dehumanization

Chapter Text

It was a great honor to serve food to the Vessels, and Henrietta took her job very seriously. Some might say that she was little more than a glorified minimum wage server without the minimum wage, but they were probably just jealous. The care and feeding of the Vessels was something that leadership took very seriously, so only dedicated members were assigned to those tasks. And Henrietta was incredibly dedicated. After all, the health and wellness of the Vessels dictated the success of their entire goal!

Tray in hand, the sleeves of her humbly-cut robe rolled up to the elbows, she navigates the sloping corridors of the bunker with an ease born of a life lived in service. Her eyes were adjusted to the dim lighting of the corridors, her feet in their slippers were accustomed to the smooth stones that lined the path. Passing by heavy metal door after heavy metal door, she arrives at her destination and gives the customary knock to signal to the handler inside that she has arrived. Security is a little tighter after the…incident. Henrietta can’t blame leadership for their reaction, either. She can’t imagine how heartbreaking such a betrayal would be - and from the very son of their great Fate-Weaver! Sighing, she shakes her head and tries to clear the image of that traitor from her mind. His kind smiles and tired eyes had all been a front, after all.

The door swings open and Henrietta steps inside, lowering her eyes reverently as she lifts her hands to pass the try to the handler. Simple initiates such as herself aren’t permitted to interact with the Vessels, after all. Still, she catches a glimpse of this one as she turns to leave, hair falling in lush blond waves across pale skin, blue eyes like the ocean piercing her form as she retreats.

He looks like an Angel… she thinks, unable to hold her mind back from another connection as she steps across the threshold and back to work, But so did the leader’s son…
