Ruby looked at the piece of paper that Louise...her mum had given her. It was the location of where her father lived. It was a rundown trailer park next to a boxing gym. She was nervous because of what she may find behind these doors, but it had to be done. Thankfully she had also packed a panic alarm button that The Doctor had given her. So that if she was in danger, he would come in moments. No matter what he was doing.
*Knock knock*
Ruby stepped back and waited a moment until a guy in a tank top and jeans with facial hair that hadn't been shaved in about a week opened the door. He looked rough like he'd been woken up.
"Yeah what's up? You're not some Jehovah are ya?"
He really did have a strong Irish accent like Louise said.
"Uh no I’m not. My name is Ruby Sunday. Nearly 20 years ago you...were together with a woman called Louise, I think she contacted you last week on Facebook. She fell pregnant and didn't tell you. In fact, she told nobody. As soon as I was born, she gave me away to a church and I was adopted. I'm your daughter."
Ruby was sure she spoke too quickly due to being nervous, but how else could you tell this news to someone. William looked at her dumbfounded and it seems there were a mixture of emotions going through him.
"Wait what?! You mean that bullshit Lou told me was true? That stupid bitch...sorry not you luv. Louise. She should have told me back in the day. Then again her circumstances were fucked up if I remember."
"Sorry to give you news like this and i'm really hoping you're called William or Bill or however you go by."
Ruby didn’t know the exact wording her mother had told him and was doubting she had told him much at all. At least she was over 18 now so that there wouldn’t be drama about money.
William must have realised where they were standing and got out of his shocked state, at least enough to let Ruby in the caravan. It was a mess, but then again he wasn't expecting any company. Ruby hated how she was giving excuses like this.
Ruby stood there for a few minutes while William tried to make things habitable, at least in a space where they could sit and chat. He then motioned for them to sit at the dining table, only moments before having last nights dinner and beer cans on it.
"Call me Bill luv. You claim you're my daughter and everything, but i've seen no DNA te.."
Ruby was prepared and gave him the document that U.N.I.T prepared, including a DNA test packet which gave results in moments thanks to alien tech, also DNA results from her biological mother. The full works..
Bill looked at what his daughter had given him, drank some beer from the bottle and then laughed. "Yeah ok you're my sprog but to be honest Doll, I don't know what you want from me. I live in a caravan fighting for money. My family life is shit."
"I don't want anything from you. Just to get to know you."
"You really don't wanna know me love. I'm a prick who has fucked up all my relationships. My anger kinda means that girls get hit ya know. I mean it’s their fault in the first place when they say certain things to me, ya know."
Ruby started to get emotional and could feel a tear go down her face. She shouldn't have tried to do this, he had too high expectations and thought that all family reunions would get happy endings. Ruby got up and put a piece of paper on what Bill called a dining table.
"I'm going to go. If you want a relationship with me, here's my email and other details. Sorry for intruding."
Before she was able to hear any excuses, Ruby rushed out of the caravan and into her own car. Then drove off. Once she was a mile away, she pulled up in a Tesco car park and let the tears fall. What felt like hours later when actually it was about 15 minutes. Ruby texted Carla.
“I need my safe space and your best hug. Thank you for being my mum.”
