Chapter 4: Extras and Questions

Chapter Text

Omake! (Extras) Links and interesting things

These are extra links to interesting sites I found while researching, plus some interesting lil tidbits I found.

🌸 Pivix Encyclopedia’s Harry Potter Series entry in Japanese. About the series from a Japanese nerd perspective.

🌸 Japanese Wikipedia articles on Fanfiction and Slash Fanfiction

🌸 Wesley C Robertson’s Regular Japanese Slang Round up This has little to do with HP but more for language learners to check out! It has lots of fan related vocab.

🌸 Honey Potter: There is a fairly popular, old original character named Honey Potter. The series she stars in is a comedy by kshaniko on Twitter (X). “The original Harry Potter is "a boy with a face and hair of James and eyes and personality of Lily," but this one is "a girl with a face and hair of Lily and eyes and personality of James" with a queenly disposition.” Source on Pixiv Encyclopedia English and on Pixiv Encyclopedia Japanese (links to the fanfic!).

🌸 Wolf, Dog, Stag, Rat and… Cat? According to this Pixiv article of HP M/M pairings, while of course the Marauders are Wolf, Rat, Dog and Stag, many Japanese fans use (or used to use? It may be out of fashion) two other animals as code for characters:

● Snape is a Cat
● Regulus is a Lion

Who knows if this is still popular?

I have also seen on tumblr the pairing tag 犬石 (Dog/Stone) to mean “Sirius/Severus” so, there are various tags.

🌸 Snames Fans of Yester-year Once Upon a time in 2002, out of 172 votes, the pairing Severus/James was second!!
Not important but… check it out here

🌸 Fanlore Wiki: Category: Japanese-Speaking Fandom is super interesting, we will have to expand it!

Here are pages I recommend related to HP or general fandom. I may make links in the future, for now just find the terms above in the main Category:

Sites:
Arcadia
Forest Page
Hameln
Niji Fan
Togetter

Other articles:
Attacker/Receiver
Bara
Combi
Coupling
Reversible <-> Fixed
Gyaku Kappuringu
Ibara
Kensakuyoke
Landmine
Must-know

Questions remain

❓ Many more questions sprung up than were answered. I hope to follow these questions soon!

Are Japanese HP fans moving away from Twitter (X) to other social media sites in recent years?

Are non-romantic fics tagged with the same sort of tags and a second tag modifier? How do I find, e.g., Ginny & Luna fics? I suspect people just use the character’s full name tag to do non-romantic fic tagging.

How are other sexual and gender representations (aromantic and asexual) fics tagged?

Will searching for character names with the GL or Yuri tag get hits for F/F fics?

Exactly how popular are Yume (Reader Insert) fics? Data!

What is an equivalent term to “multi shipper” and/or someone who loves minor rare pairings?

How are poly ships tagged? How popular are they? (I snooped around a bit, still working on it)

Are fests organised on Twitter (X)? Or, where?

Are there Japanese Discord Servers?

Is HP fanfic culture spreading in Japanese on TikTok?

Are BBS still useful for HP fanfic fans? Is there gold in old threads?

Fan comics are self-published (known as dojinshi); are there also lots of printed self-published fanfics ? Is it still common?

💬 If you have any hints to these answers, let me know! As I investigate I will probably add to this Meta series.

Notes:

Thank you for checking this out! Be sure to read the whole series, subscribe for future updates. I cannot wait to continue research and exploring the Japanese HP fanfic sphere.
