Chapter Text
For the first time since the Solstice,
I sleep soundly through the night.
You are here, in my arms, and you know.
You know that you are loved and that
My heart beats for you, and with
My cheek pressed to your chest,
My ear to your own pulse, it feels like
Yours beats for me, too, dearest.
What will tomorrow bring? Will we live,
Or will I lose you, like we’ve lost so many others?
Cyrus. FCG.
Derrig. Will.
Can my heart ever recover if it must
Be broken twice? And do I dare subject you
To such agonizing grief?
The thought scares me more than losing you.
He told me to live outside of his shadow,
To be happy again, to love.
You asked me how the Wildmother felt,
And all I could think about was him,
Smiling, my blossoms twining between us,
Giving me you, giving me back some of my heart,
So I could give it to you, and taking the guilt,
So I could lie here and know this is okay.
My heart has longed for you all the while,
So much I thought I would awake some days,
To flowering vines reaching, reaching,
From my fingertips all the way to you,
Wherever you had laid your head.
Some mornings I wished they would,
So my buds would guide you home,
Or else lead me across the world to you again.
Some nights it was all I could do
Not to fall asleep with the sending stone
Pressed to my face, to my lips,
Wishing it were your skin,
For fear some of my thoughts, the ache
In my chest, would somehow find its way
To your ears. What difference would it make,
To have given you more to worry about?
The world is between us, love,
Even now that you’re in arms’ reach again,
With death or victory nipping at our heels,
As morning breaks into what could be our last day,
Simply hold me a little longer, dearest sun in my sky,
Keep my hand clasped in yours, your lips
To my hair, the thrum of your heart
In pace with mine, until destiny drags us into battle.
From the moment I met you, my heart sang
Your name, like a song I had once known
And forgotten, like a flower bursting open
In the first thaw of spring, like air in my lungs.
If we survive this, if you’ll have me,
I will follow you like morning glories follow the rising sun,
Like you once followed me, steadfast and true.
Wherever you go, I will go, too.
