Chapter Text
It’s all too easy.
The boy was basically gift wrapped by that naive muggle mother of his. He’ll need to remember to thank her in person later. Helpful idiots are hard to come by after all.
Fenrir had his doubts that this little get together would ever happen, had lost sleep over it even. But here Remus is, small and cautious and perfect in his arms. And its all thanks to the kid’s parents.
Lyall is currently screwing around in Albania thinking he has the trail of something big (he doesn’t, but Fenrir has taken extra care in making the bastard think he does). Fenrir would never have been able to see Remus let alone hold him if Lyall was still in the country.
And the pup’s mother, Hope… well, Fenrir admits he tried too hard with her. He was under the impression that she was just as sly, just as fiendishly capable, as her husband. He was wrong and overdid it with the owls. He could have just waltzed into the Lupin household and walked right back out with his pup. The whole diagon snack and grab was unnecessary.
“You won’t take me away, will you?”
….What a thing for his pup to say.
The hairs on the back of Greyback’s rise, alerting him to what is about to happen.
OURS. MINE!
Fenrir almost chokes on his wolf’s voraciousness as it attempts to consume him and his child.
You brainless beast, shut up, you’ll scare him!
They can’t fight here, not now. Not in Diagon alley in a public shop with Remus in their arms. He didn’t think that he’d need to explain the intricacies of this meeting with his wolf as they’d been planning this for months, but apparently he had. Fenrir grits his teeth and wrestles with the brute as it claws for control of their limbs.
This is why we gave him up in the first place. Losing Remus was your fault. Fenrir snarls inwardly, viciously.
Just a quickly as it had attacked, his wolf sinks back into the recesses of his mind. Back where it belonged.
Fenrir has to take a moment to get heart rate back under control back before he can assure his pup that no one will be taken today.
“No, son. No one is going missing today.” He glances at the clock hanging by the front door of the shop. Immediately he wishes he hadn’t.
Three minutes. Only three minutes until the carrier owls come to their natural senses.
Unwanted emotions swell in Fenrir’s bowels, making him sick with the foreign feeling, “I hate to go, pup, but-“
“You’re leaving?” Remus sounds disappointed.
And isn’t that just gutting?
“It’s not forever, puppy.” Fenrir can’t help how he squeezes the boy just a little too tightly. He’d been waiting for this reunion for so long he regrets not planning this moment to last longer.
Reluctantly, the older werewolf places Remus on the ground and points him toward the door. “Go on. She’s waiting for you.”
“Okay,” Remus takes a few steps towards safety then stops to look back, his eyes wet and unsure, “But I’ll see you later?”
“Later, I promise.” Fenrir despises how his voice cracks on the last word. “Go now.”
Remus stares for just a moment longer. “I won’t forget you.”
And then he’s off and out the door. Fenrir watches him walk out into the street and embrace a disheveled and sobbing Hope Lupin.
Tch, weak woman. Fenrir will use her weakness to its fullest in the months to come.
“Are you done, sir?” The young woman running the shop materializes from behind the front counter.
“Yes.” Fenrir doesn’t so much as blink, eyes still glued to his son’s retreating form. “Did you get what I asked for?”
“Yes, sir.” The slip of a girl hands him a sealed envelope. She is careful not to let her fingers brush against him. “It’s all there.”
Remus is no longer in sight and it pains Fenrir. “Good, your payment is under the bench across from Fortescue’s. Don’t pick it up until closing time.”
“Understood, sir.”
Fenrir heads for the door, envelope in hand. “Oh, and Cindy?”
“Yes?”
Fenrir turns to give her his best smile. “Tell anyone and I’ll bury you in a shit pile on some godforsaken muggle farm.”
She doesn’t reply this time, just gives him a shaky nod. Fenrir takes in a deep breath, inhaling her pungent fear and savoring it, before making his way outside.
If Cindy did her job right then today marks the beginning of the end of Fenrir’s problems, and the start of Lyall Lupin’s.
