Chapter 5: Krosty The Snowman (Deleted Scene)

Notes:

Surprise!

To celebrate the release of season two of Arcane, I will be releasing one deleted sub-chapter from each of my stories in the Arcane Collection every Friday. These do not affect the main plot of the story (think of them as deleted scenes in a movie) but do serve to flesh out some of the characters and scenes.

I wrote, rewrote and ultimately deleted many sub-chapters across the stories. However, Krosty The Snowman is unique in that it remains the only deleted sub-chapter of Of Faults and Fathers (which goes to show how clear the idea was when it came to me).

This was the first sub-chapter I wrote, but was ultimately cut because it disrupted the flow of Act II and did not match the tone I was going for (it is very light hearted and besides the nods to Silco's mortality and the war, can almost pass for a separate story) although some of you may recognise some elements I recycled (the winter setting in "If it can be fused, then it can be split (II)" and the miniature shark bomb which reassembles itself which Jinx shows Silco in Act IV).

The style I have used here is quite different from the style I ultimately adopted in the main story. This was my proof of concept to see if the idea I had could stand on its own as a story - in this case, it very much did.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Krosty The Snowman

Christmas. Silco never expected to last this long. Perhaps his ploy had worked. That there really was a God.

And then he wondered why he had dared to hope and when he had turned into a child.

Still, he reaches for the snowflakes falling through his open window. The blizzard in Piltover was worse than expected, for snow to fall so deep into Zaun. He vaguely makes a note of this. Should they press forward and break the ceasefire? Was there an advantage in doing so?

PLONK! A bomb dropped on his desk, disturbing his thoughts. A new design with the face of an unhinged snowman.

"Do you like it?" Her voice drifts from the rafters. Silco picks it up. It breaks apart under his touch, releases odourless gas.

"I didn't know Krosty was a favourite of yours."

"He is! And he can refreeze himself. Like in the song!" The snowman bomb automatically reforms into a bomb in Silco's hand, flies back towards Jinx in the rafters.

Silco reaches for an almanac buried in his desk. Flips through it to check on today's blizzard.

"He doesn't refreeze himself at the end. He dies."

"No he doesn't!"

Silco pulls a piece of paper towards him. Starts making notes from the almanac.

"Yes he does."

Jinx appears on his desk. His papers fly around them. Silco pulls the almanac away from the mess, continues making notes.

"He doesn't die! Where did you learn to read?"

Silco stops writing. He needs to impart this message on Jinx before it is too late, but he wishes he knew how. "Death comes for us all, child."

"You're telling me?" Jinx aims a finger gun at the ceiling and pulls the thumb trigger. Silco grabs her wrist. This is important, why can she not see?

"You know, but you don't. Nobody is immortal, Jinx. Nobody." Even me, he wants to say, but cannot bring himself to. Because he doesn't want to hurt her, or worse, himself.

Jinx jerks her hand away, annoyed. "I know, I know. Gee, lighten up why don't ya? It's nearly Christmas."

Jinx disappears back to the rafters. And the moment is lost. Silco gathers his notes and a map of Piltover.

"We need to mobilise the War Council. The blizzard has presented us an opportunity to strike."

Jinx suddenly appears beside him. They leave together.

Jinx drops the act, grabs his hand. "I know everyone's gonna die one day. It's like Science or something." Silco glances at Jinx, barely believing. Did his message actually sink through?

Jinx pushes an unhinged snowman bomb in his hand. She disappears as the bomb breaks apart and releases a scent of rotten eggs in the air. He raises his head and sees Jinx at the bottom of the staircase. The snowman bomb flies out of his hand towards hers, reforming itself in mid air.

"Except Krosty. Krosty refreezes himself."
