The home that almost closed its eyes

Chapter 4: Happily Ever After

Summary:

A nightmare, a shock (or three) and a trial of fire

Notes:

Still in the hospital.

Chapter Text

That long bleep was the soundtrack of his worst nightmare. He jolted, feeling arms pull him away from the hospital bed. None of the words people said around him registered, all that mattered was that his love had flatlined. He was gone.

Dead.

Bleep–

That horrid noise signifying his death. Doctors charged up a defibrillator and tried to restart his pulse.

Nothing.

Bleep–

Shock two came, and Hao Ting waited with bated breath.

Nothing again.

Bleep–

Shock three, and-

Bleep–

Bleep. Bleep. Bleep.

He was alive. His heart was beating again, Yu Xi Gu was alive again.

Bleep. Bleep. Bleep.

Hao Ting finally stopped fighting against the arms that held him back and fell to the ground again, the second time since the accident. He had a feeling deep in his heart that Yu Xi Gu would be alright. They’d have their happily ever after, even if they had to go through multiple trials of fire to achieve it.

Notes:

I wrote this needing to vent lots of feelings. The idea came on a whim, and I've written it primarily over 3 hours while falling half asleep, with an idea from two nights ago. It's my first time posting a story online.

I'll admit this was originally meant to be a sad ending. Both leads were going to die, with Xi Gu not surviving his accident and Hao Ting being so heartbroken he committed suicide. I was fully committed to that end. But I desperately felt like I needed to finish this off as a happy ending after someone died early in the morning as I wrote this. I changed where the story was going in Chapter 4.

The title is modified from a phrase my mum often says in our language. To explain, it refers to how the warmth and love from a family member will illuminate a household beautifully, but when that family member dies, the home will darken and feel lost - just like it has closed its eyes.
