Henry’s sitting on the sofa with James in his arms, Alex has started working half-days while Henry is doing what he can from home, but there are some days when he wishes they were both still home full-time. Today is one of them, no matter how much he tries he can’t quite get James to quiet for long, he misses Alex’s magic touch.
Henry’s head pops up when he hears the front door open, he knows Alex isn’t expected to be home, for another couple hours and the number of people with keys to their home are numbered. When Alex appears in the doorway, he’s a welcome sight, an almost immediate balm on Henry’s frazzled nerves. Alex drops his briefcase and walks over to the sofa, dropping next to Henry. James reaches for him and Alex takes him, pressing a kiss to his forehead and whispering, “Dumpling, are you giving Daddy a hard time?”
“Only a little bit. What brings you home early?”
“You didn’t answer your phone either time I called, and I didn’t have much going on so I cut out early, apparently there was a pot on how long I’d make it today before heading out. Not sure who ended up winning, but I’d rather be here, so hopefully they do something good with their winnings.”
James has burrowed himself into Alex’s chest and is almost asleep already. Henry knows he was probably already wearing himself out, and he’s almost jealous of the ease with which he falls asleep in Alex’s arms. But the way they look, like everything he’s ever wanted, and so adorable he’s not sure his heart won’t burst, makes any bit of jealousy disappear.
He slides down on the sofa and rests his forehead against Alex’s shoulder. It’s not long before he joins their son in falling asleep on Alex, but before he does, he thinks that somehow he’s ended up with everything he’s ever wanted and how lucky he is to get to have it with Alex.
