Chapter Text
Shadow was standing on a cliff looking at the broken moon. It was one of those nights where the breeze was just right and everything was quiet. Shadow liked these nights they reminded him of the home he had lost.
His peace was soon ruined by the arrival of the one person (or hedgehog), he didn’t want to see.
“Hey Shads. I brought you some food. We had steak!” This idiot said holding a small glass container.
“Didn’t I tell you I don't need to eat?” The black and red hedgehog rolled his eyes.
Sonic chuckled then replied, “oh yeah…I forgot! but you should still try it!”
Shadow shot him a glare and looked down at the steak. He had known vaguely what steak was but he’d never tried it because Maria couldn’t have it.
“no,” Shadow spat.
“Awe come on, just try a bite!” Blue begged. His begging vaguely reminded him of Maria and his heart softened a little but then he remembered who it actually was and he stiffened right back up.
“No,” Shadow continued.
“Please?!”
“No,”
“For meeee?”
“No”
The two continued back and forth for a bit before sonic finally gave up and sighed, “More for me I guess.” The colorful, more charismatic hedgehog pulled out one of the pieces and proceeded to try and shove the whole thing in his mouth though ended up choking.
Shadow snorted(the closest thing to a laugh you could get). “You’re so chronically stupid I wonder how you're still alive,” Shadow's tone was a bit harsh(mostly to hid the fact he wanted to laugh).
Once the blue blur managed to save himself from a long painful death he shot back with that annoying smirk, “I am deeply offended! I’m just brave and sometimes people mistake that for stupidity.”
The darker hedgehog just shook his head in disapproval and went back to staring at the moon.
“The moon is gorgeous tonight, well minus the fact that it’s split in uneven halves; isn’t it?” Sonic was leaning over to catch Shadows' attention back. He had a smile on his face and it made the ebony hedgehog roll his eyes in annoyance.
The silence fell back over for a moment until the blur continued. “Hey wanna race?” Sonic asked, “but you know, without trying to kill each other this time.”
Shadow was slightly taken aback. He hadn’t really expected the question but he gave a slight nod once he at least half processed what Sonic said.
“Great!” the other hedgehog clapped his gloved paws together. “We’ll race from here, all the way to uhm- that peak over there and back!” He pointed to the top of the biggest mountain.
Shadow grunted with a nod and Sonic set the container with some food still left in it, down by some bushes and he got in a running position. “On the count of three. One. Two. Three!”
The instant Sonic shouted "Three!" he was gone, a blue streak tearing through the forest.
“Tch, typical impatience from someone like him.” Shadow rolled his eyes and caught up with the blue streak that was already a third of the way there.
Sonic smirked as he noticed Shadow beside him. “What? Does your brooding slow you down?”
“You wish,” Shadow scoffed before speeding up.
Sonic smirked and sped up to match his speed. The two alien hedgehogs wisped through the trees and boulders. They bounced off of obstacles to gain advantages they only held for mere seconds before the other caught back up. The mix of blue and red could almost look purple when they were bouncing around.
The wind howled as they cut through it. Shadow was actually enjoying the moment surprisingly and fought hard to keep a small smile off his face.
“Keep up mk,” Sonic shot up ahead and broke the sound barrier. Shadow slowed down a moment as he watched the blue streak shoot up the mountain.
Shadow shook his head and began running faster since the blur was already about a mile away from the supposed ‘finish line.’
Shadow made it up about a minute later. He looked around for the blue hedgehog who was nowhere to be found but he did see a small pond reflecting the moonlight. As soon as he approached the water he was immediately jumped by a streak of blue.
Shadow skidded into the dirt and his back hit a rock. The emo hedgehog quickly recovered and looked up at the blue hedgehog on top of him.
“Ha gotcha!” Sonic chuckled with a triumphant grin.
Shadow in one swift motion switched the roles and was now holding down the Sonic insead of it being the other way around.
“What the hell was that?!” He growled but had to admit that Sonic looked really pretty now that he was paying a bit more attention but he quickly shook the thought away.
“That my friend was a perfectly executed victory!” The blue hedgehog smirked, “Now can you get off me.”
Shadow got off the other hog and dusted himself off with an annoyed grunt, “God you're, by far, the most irritating and idiotic, person I have ever met!”
“Flattered really,” Sonic waved his hand and looked away pretending to be embarrassed by the insult.
“I loathe you,” Shadow narrowed his eyes and grumbled.
“I heart you to buddy!” Sonic grinned with a small wink. The blue hedgehog pulled out his phone to check the time, “Anyways I have about 5 minutes before I should be back. What do you wanna do?”
“Anything but be around you,” Shadow quickly shot back with a scowl.
“Owch, your words hurt,” Sonic said dramatically.
“You're fine,” Shadow folded his arms and stared off into the distance.
“Rude much,” Sonic rolled his eyes and smiled. He also folded his arms and stood next to Shadow, “No but seriously, what do you wanna do? or do you just wanna brood the whole time?”
“If you’re bored you can go away,” Shadow grumbled and didn't even look at the other.
“I coulddd, but annoying you is more entertaining,” Sonic grinned and rocked back and forth on his heels.
Shadow gave the blue hedgehog a side-eye glare, “Humph.”
Sonic smirked and leaned forward to get into the other view, “I'm not hearing an insult.”
Shadow huffed and looked away but he didn't say anything else.
Sonic pulled out his phone to check the time once again and the time and sighed, “Welp, that's all the time I have. I gotta head back since I want a few hours of sleep but I'll bring you breakfast mk.”
Shadow grumbled in acknowledgement and in a quick flash of blue Sonic ran off. Soon after Sonic left the edgehog left as well, not without admiring the beauty the annoying blue menace had been distracting him from.
