“Gah!”
Subaru quickly sat up with an afraid expression as he began to look around frantically as if looking for his killer.
His eyes widened in surprise when he realized that he’s in an empty void, ‘Where the hell am I?‘
He swiftly looked down at his clothes only to notice that the slice and blood on his tracksuit had disappeared, he sighed in relief before beginning to ponder where exactly he was.
‘Have I… died?’ Subaru thought to himself as he continued to look around at the void he had ended up in.
He recalled his short isekai journey and thought to himself ‘That could have been a dream, but wouldn’t I have woken up if I died in a dream?’
He decided to test that so he pulled the sleeve on his tracksuit up and pinched himself, causing him to wince in pain, ‘So this part definitely isn’t a dream’
After a few minutes of catching his breath, he decided to stand up to search where exactly he had ended up before quickly being startled by a blue screen appearing next to him.
[You have died.]
>
‘“You… have died…?”’ Subaru croaked out in disbelief before clicking on the arrow underneath the text. ‘Does that mean that I’d really been isekai’d?’
[The requirements for your skill have been met. You may now use your skill]
“Skill…?” Subaru whispered in surprise.
[A skill will be copied from ‘Elsa Granhiert’ at random]
“So it seems that’s the name of my killer huh…” Subaru mumbled before clenching his fist in anger, ‘Elsa Granhiert…’
[Generating Skill Cards…]
‘Those are Skill Cards?’ Subaru thought to himself as he looked upon the cards floating in the middle of the void.
[Please select a skill card.]
“2 Bronze, 3 Silver, and 1 Gold…” Subaru muttered to himself, ‘Purely based on the video games I’ve played, Gold seems to be the most obvious choice…’
Subaru quickly grabbed the Gold Skill Card out of the sky before shielding his eyes with his other hand as a bright light began shining from the Skill Card.

“What the hell was that…?” Subaru muttered to himself as his eyes opened up to the marketplace he had found himself in earlier.
‘So does this mean I’ve actually been isekai’d?’ Subaru thought to himself in excitement before remembering his death, ‘But…’
He quickly slapped himself in the cheeks before starting to run towards somewhere, ‘Get a hold of yourself, Natsuki Subaru! Satella needs your help!’
The sound of wind quickly reached his ears as he began running towards the Slums, ‘Wherever I was, it said that I had died…’
A glimpse of the sunset is viewed by his eyes, ‘… which I can’t deny. After all, I woke up after losing so much blood…’
The sound of his beating heart became louder, ‘… But I woke up back in the middle of this marketplace which makes me wonder how exactly it works…’
The sound of another blue screen opening caught his attention causing him to quickly slow down, with him sliding for a bit on the brick floor.
[To view your Skill Cards, recite the phrase ‘Skill Card Open’]
“Skill Card… Open?” Subaru repeated out loud causing the blue screen to expand and change text.
[Returner’s Clockwork Watch]
[Rank: EX]
[Activated automatically on death. You will return 24 hours back in time from the moment of your death. Your memories and stats are preserved while returning. However, there is a greater penalty the higher your rank.]
‘Yeesh, what a mouthful… I’ll think of another name once I see my other Skill Cards’ Subaru thought to himself as he tapped on the screen. ‘Though I wonder what the penalty is…’
[I Want to Become Just Like You]
[Rank: S+]
[Activates automatically upon death. After being killed by an enemy, copy one of their skills and make it your own. Skills can be copied from targets who have killed you before. The copied skill is randomly selected.]
“Seriously? A copy Skill that requires me to die?” Subaru muttered in annoyance and a hint of fear, ‘That sounds like it would be very OP though…’
[Super Regeneration]
[Rank: S]
[Original Owner: Elsa Granhiert.]
[A skill born from a curse carved onto the user. Grants you immortality in the form of rapid regeneration of lost or damaged body cells. However, there is a limit to the damage you can sustain.]
“Wait, wouldn't that just prevent me from using my other Skills?” Subaru complained before closing the menu.
“Hey, kid! You’ve been staring at nothing and mumbling to yourself for awhile!’” The man in front him shouted to him, startling him before widening his eyes as he recognized the man.
‘Huh, seems like I was checking my Skills in front of the Appa stand’ Subaru thought to himself before greeting him with surprising familiarity, “Hey Appa man!”
“Do I know you?” The Appa Salesman questioned with a raised eyebrow.
“You wouldn’t have remembered me…” Subaru said sheepishly before asking him, “Quick question, was there a fight of any kind near here?”
The Appa Salesman sighed deeply before replying, “Besides a few thugs that the Astrea kid dealt with a few days ago, everything’s been running just fine”
‘Does that mean I’ve been sent further than my arrival in this world?’ Subaru thought to himself, raising his eyebrow. ‘Though I wonder if this ‘Astrea’ person could help me…’
“Thanks for answering… Sorry about standing in front of your store by the way” Subaru apologized before deciding to walk away.
“Just buy some Appas for compensation” The Appa Salesman demanded with his scruff voice, doing a ‘pay-up’ gesture with his hand.
Subaru began to back away with his hands held up in surrender, “Sorry, but I’m broke beyond compare”
“Then get out of here! You’re scaring away potential customers with that muttering!” The Appa Salesman shouted at him.
“I’ll make sure to buy your Appas when I see you again!” Subaru said while waving goodbye as he ran away towards the Loothouse.
“D-don’t worry, she shouldn’t be here yet…” Subaru reassured himself as he began knocking on the door of the Loothouse.
The sound of a peep hole opening startled Subaru, with the sound of an old man asking, “For a rat…”
‘Shit! Is this one of those secret codes!?’ Subaru panicked in his mind before replying unconfidently, “… a mouse trap?”
“For a white whale?”
‘A whale huh… aren’t they hunted using guns? But guns don’t exist in this era so the closest thing would be…’ “A harpoon”
“To the noble dragon lord, we are…”
‘’Noble dragon lord?’ Makes it sound like the nobles are treated much more like royalty here so I’d guess…’ “Peasants?”
“2 out of 3… that’s pretty good” The rough voice of the man behind the door complimented.
The sound of the door slamming open surprised Subaru with the man who opened the door asking him, “Get in, kid”
‘A giant?’ Subaru thought to himself as he walked in and sat down on a chair, whilst the giant started to clean some beer glasses, “So what can I do for ya?”
Subaru contemplated for a bit, looking at the glass of water the man had prepared for him before asking, “Have you… died, recently?”
The giant looked at him with disbelief for a few moments before laughing out loud. Subaru felt the blush on his face appear before shouting, “I’m being serious, old man! Have you or have you not died recently!?”
The old man quickly shut up. Noticing the conviction in Subaru’s voice, he decided to answer, “Ha! I admit I’m an old man at death’s door, but I’m not dying yet”
‘So that confirms it, I’ve really been sent back 24 hours before my death…’ Subaru thought to himself as the grip on his seat tightened.
The giant raised an eyebrow when he noticed Subaru’s grip tighten and decided to ask, “Hey kid, what are you doing running around this late anyways? Don’t ya have someone looking for you?”
“Ah, actually… I don’t really have a place to stay” Subaru said, looking down as he recalled his parents.
Rom doubted that, but he assumed the kid might have run away or got into some trouble. Either way he shouldn’t care, but… he saw the kid’s face. He might not have realized it himself, but he was trembling slightly, looking like a startled animal.
And the kid’s eyes… As someone who used to be a part of an army, he can tell when somebody has faced death, and this kid had that look.
So with a heavy sigh, the giant decided, “You can stay here, kid”
“Wait, really?” Subaru asked in surprise.
“Yes, really” The old man said as he threw a pair of keys towards Subaru.
“Your room’s over there, number 02, alright?” The giant explained while pointing at the room with the numbers 02 written on it.
“Thanks old man! I’ll make sure to pay you back later!” Subaru had a small smile on his face as he walked towards his door.
“I’ll hold you to that, but just call me Old Man Rom, will ya!?” Rom shouted at Subaru as he closed the door.
Subaru was lying in bed, looking at his outstretched palm, 'Skills, ranks... it's all so… game-like.'
He thought back to the blue screens that had appeared in front of him. Just a few hours ago, Subaru would be extremely excited at the prospect of it. Getting transported to another world, with OP skills at that! But… 'It felt so real.' He clenched his hand.
'I still remember the sensation of dying, my blood pouring out. Even if this all seems like a game, it isn't fake in the slightest.'
The fact that he woke up in this city even after going back only cemented it. There was no going back anymore. Subaru stared at the ceiling, his face showing conviction.
‘This is my reality now. Satella! I swore I'd save you, and I intend to keep my promise! I'll deal with this 'Elsa', and no one will have to die!'
Having such thoughts, Subaru slowly drifted to sleep.
Subaru woke up with a yawn as he stretched his arms, ‘Thank god I didn’t have a nightmare…’
‘… I don’t think I’d have the balls to do what I plan to do later if I did’
It didn’t take long for Subaru to bathe himself and wear his clothes. And in all honesty, despite what the surrounding area may show, Rom’s Loothouse wasn’t that dirty… it was actually quite cozy and the bed he had slept on felt great.
‘Maybe it’s because they sell some goods here?’ Subaru thought to himself as he went to go open his door, ‘Though it’s not my problem if a noble were to lose their wallet or clothes’
“Hey Old Man Rom!” Subaru greeted Rom with a smile as the giant was preparing a drink.
“Heya kid,” Rom replied with a rough voice, obviously showing how he had just woken up.
Subaru then sat down and asked, “Can I get a glass of milk?”
Rom passed a glass of milk towards Subaru before asking, “So, could ya tell me you’re name?”
Subaru almost spit out his drink when he realized he completely forgot to introduce himself like an idiot and decided to stand up, “My name is Natsuki Subaru. Not only am I homeless, I’m also broke beyond compare! Nice to meet you!”
“What a… great introduction” Rom replied with a sarcastic tone as he continued to clean his cups, “Homeless, huh? Where exactly do ya come from?”
“Ah, somewhere far from here… I don’t think I could go back even if I wanted to” Subaru explained with a sad tone as he looked down.
‘I wonder… Do other people here have Skills as well?’ Subaru thought to himself before deciding to ask, “So, Old Man Rom, what Skills do you have?”
Rom raised an eyebrow at the question, “Skills? The hell’s a Skill?”
‘So Skills are really only available to me, huh…’ Subaru pondered to himself.
“You mean what kind of Magic I can do?” Rom asked in clarification, “If you’re asking about that, sorry kid, but I don’t use Magic”
“So do you guys have Elements here?” Subaru asked as he laid his head on the counter.
“What faraway place did ya have to live to have to ask these questions…?” Rom questioned in disbelief, “But anyways, there are 4 basic elements…”
“Fire, for temperature control. Water, used for healing. Wind, used mostly for cutting, and Earth, used for controlling the earth and defending yourself”
‘So Satella used Fire magic to freeze the air and shoot it? That sounds impressive!’ Subaru thought to himself, recalling the magic that Satella had used to save him in the alleyway.
“But there are 2 other elements that are much rarer,” Rom continued to explain, putting up two fingers on his hand, “First being Yin or Shadow magic, it can only be used to weaken enemies”
‘An Element only used for debuffs? Hopefully I don’t get that one’ Subaru silently hoped.
“And then finally there’s Yang or Light magic, which is the opposite, you can strengthen yourself and allies with it”
‘Why is it that the 2 rare elements are for support characters!?’ Subaru complained in his mind while pinching the bridge of his nose, “So, Old Man Rom, do you know where Felt is?”
“So that’s why you went here huh…” Rom mumbled to himself, “Felt already left to do a job somebody hired her to complete”
‘Damnit! So she’s already gone to steal Satella’s insignia!?’ Subaru quietly panicked to himself.
“What do you want with her anyways?” Rom asked with suspicion, “Felt told me she’s stealing an insignia so what do you want to do with it?”
“Ah… I want to return it to its owner, a girl called Satella” Subaru asked with a smile.
‘This kid...’ Rom almost dropped a glass in shock of what Subaru said, “Kid… Satella’s not her actual name”
Subaru raised an eyebrow at his statement and asked, “Why wouldn’t it be? We stayed together for almost an entire day, why wouldn’t she give me her real name?”
‘Seems like the girl’s a good kid if that’s what she was trying to do…’ Rom closed his eyes and sighed deeply before explaining, “She probably did that to protect ya from her”
“Protect me from her?” Subaru questioned in confusion.
“That’s right, based on what ya said earlier, you’re ignorant of everything in this kingdom so I’ll explain. Satella’s basically a taboo name here,” Rom explained, “It’s taboo because the name comes from a silver haired half elf that destroyed half of the world 400 years ago”
‘So even then, she tried to protect me…’ Subaru thought to himself with a clenched fist, ‘I’ll make sure I find her real name!’
“Thanks for the info, old man. I have to go out for a while!” Subaru said as he stood up from his seat and began walking to the door, “I’ll be back by around sunset!”
Rom saw the determined look on Subaru’s face as he left the building and thought to himself, ‘Looks like the kid’s more interesting than I thought’
“So according to the guy I asked, Elsa’s hideout should be just around…” Subaru muttered to himself.
“Here!” Subaru said as he pointed at an abandoned building.
“Phew! I thought I’d go crazy with how long it took to find this…” Subaru talked to himself aloud as he sat down on the ground, leaning on a nearby wall, ‘That guy must’ve had a good memory if he could recall somebody suspicious sneaking in here last night’
‘I even managed to steal a knife for self defense!’ Subaru thought to himself as he touched the tip of the dagger stuffed in his pocket.
The sun’s bright glow quickly caused Subaru to put a hand above his eyes to block some of the sunlight, ‘Is it noon already? … Seems like the search took longer than I expected’
“While I’m here, I might as well think of a new name for Returner’s Clockwork Watch…” Subaru muttered to himself, “Skill Card, [Returner’s Clockwork Watch], Open”
[Returner’s Clockwork Watch]
[Rank: EX]
[Activated automatically on death. You will return 24 hours back in time from the moment of your death. Your memories and stats are preserved while returning. However, there is a greater penalty the higher your rank.]
“Let’s see here…” Subaru mumbled to himself as he began prodding around the menu on the blue screen, ‘Settings, Skills, Profil— Ah there it is! Rename!’
Subaru touched the [Rename] button on the menu, prompting the blue screen to show a pop up.
[What would you like to rename Skill {Returner’s Clockwork Watch} to?]
I__________________
[Insert your desired name here!]
‘Hmm, what should I call it?’ Subaru thought to himself, ‘[Returner’s Clockwork Watch] is way too much of a mouthful so I’ve gotta think of something more catchy and short…’
‘Return is short enough so I can keep that, but what could go well with it..? The ability involves death so I’d probably put it in there, but that leaves an empty space in the middle…’
‘… Aha, I got it!’ Subaru thought to himself with a smile as he began typing it into the screen’s prompt, “I’ll call it, [Return By Death]!”
[Skill {Returner’s Clockwork Watch} has successfully been renamed to {Return By Death} by User Natsuki Subaru!]
Subaru began to stretch his arms before speaking, “Now that that’s done, I can start piecing together what Elsa’s capabilities should be”
‘Based on what I copied from her, she’ll have [Super Regeneration] as well. And given her speed, she most likely also works as an assassin…’
‘Her physical strength is most likely also much stronger than mine since she was able to overpower Old Man Rom when I first got to the Loothouse…’
‘In all honesty, she outclasses me in everything. But that won’t stop me! Even if she kills me a million times, I promised Satel— No, that elf girl that I would save her! And I’ll find out her name in the process as well!’ Subaru thought in conviction as he looked upon his clenched fist in front of him.
’No matter what I’ll— Eh?’ The sound of footsteps entering the house he had been watching interrupted his monologue.
Deciding to follow from behind, Subaru quickly looked through the doorway, only to find a blue haired child with a pink flower ornament on her head, walking towards the stairs leading to the exposed roof of the house.
Subaru continued to follow her, noticing how she was holding some wood on her. When she got up onto the exposed roof, she quickly dropped the wood that she had been holding on to a fire that had almost been fully extinguished.
When the girl sat down near the fire, Subaru decided to climb up further up the stairs to reach the top floor and asked, “Hey kid, what are you doing here?”
“Hm? I should be asking you that, mister” The girl responded with a slight tilt of her head.
“I’m just here to try and find a criminal, but what are you doing here? The residential area is over there, this is just a random abandoned building…” Subaru said while pointing at a direction which he had passed while searching for Elsa that had residents there.
“Oh, me? I’m waiting for my sister” The girl replied as she began to poke at the fire with a stick next to her.
“Really? What’s she doing all the way out here?”
“She told me to wait here while she finishes her job…”
‘What kind of job warrants having her sister wait out in the middle of an abandoned building anyways?’ Subaru thought to himself, “So kid, can I get your name?”
“Oh… I don’t think that will be necessary” Meili responded as she looked up towards Subaru.
“Why’s tha— Grhk!” The feeling of a blade entering Subaru’s body from the back made him cough up blood.
“Oh~ Looks like you found a new friend here, Meili~” The sound of a sultry voice from behind Subaru prompted him to look at the source.
Standing there was Elsa Granhiert, slowly walking up the stairs as she licked her lips upon viewing Subaru’s bloody back.
Subaru pulled out the kukri knife from his back, coughing up more blood before glaring at her with hatred and asked, “Are— Are you Elsa Granhiert…?”
Noticing Subaru’s glare towards Elsa, Meili decided to run towards the corner of the room to hide and wait out for Elsa to call for her.
“Hmm~ I’m surprised you’re even still talking,” Elsa said, continuing to walk slowly towards Subaru’s location. She quickly prepared her stance before declaring, “I’ll send you to the angels quickly~”
‘Just like before— she’ll lunge at me while aiming for my stomach!’ Subaru quickly thought as he pulled out the dagger from his pocket, ‘I just have to counter it!’
Elsa quickly lunged at Subaru with her kukri knife in hand. Aiming for Subaru’s stomach, she slashed the area, with Subaru quickly jumping backwards, dodging the slash.
Subaru then spun around and kicked her in the face while throwing his dagger towards her. Elsa’s face as she was knocked back shifted to surprise when she noticed the knife heading in her direction, causing a small cut on her face.
‘Let’s go! I can do this!’ Subaru thought to himself with a small smile at the fact that he had been able to damage Elsa.
Elsa landed with a clean stance, further away from Subaru. She touched the small cut on her face with a finger before licking the blood and saying, “Looks like you’re quite impressive~”
“However… it wasn’t enough~” Elsa continued.
Subaru’s small smile at the damage he inflicted on Elsa quickly turned into horror when he looked down onto his stomach and realized that Elsa had cut it. ‘No no no no no—‘
Elsa’s voice sprang out from in front of him, causing Subaru to look in her direction, “Are you surprised? I cut open your belly when was passed by each other~”
With conviction on his face, Subaru took the kukri knife that Elsa had previously thrown at him and prepared his stance.
Elsa was taken by surprise when she realized that Subaru had not yet fallen even after being cut open like that, “Oh~ Your tenacity is quite impressive—“
“—Well, I’ll finish you off now~” Elsa quickly lunged at Subaru, with Subaru attempting to block it. However, he was unsuccessful and Elsa managed to cut open yet another gash on his stomach.
‘Damnit!’ Subaru thought to himself as he landed on the floor, ‘If I continue like this, I won’t be able to damage her and will just die after hitting the limit!’
‘That should be the end of him for now…’ Elsa thought to herself as she began to walk towards where she had seen Meili hide herself.
Elsa’s expression turned into shock once again when she noticed by the corner of her eye that Subaru had begun standing up again, ‘How did he— Wait…’
Elsa licked her lips in anticipation, ‘Looks like he can heal just like me… Now that’s interesting~’
“Were you blessed just like me?” Elsa’s sultry voice called out, surprising Subaru, “Were you given a blessing just like how I was?”
‘The fact that she’s asking if I’ve been ‘blessed’ must be sarcastic’ Subaru thought to himself as he prepared his knife, ‘The description from the system specifically said it was a curse’
“If you mean I’ve been cursed like you, then yes,” Subaru said as he prepared his stance, “I’ve been ‘blessed’, just like you”
“Then I’ll need to ask you some questions~” Elsa’s voice rang out, her stance changed and became more serious, startling Subaru ‘It’s fine, I can just push through the pain and beat her, it’s fine…’ Subaru began to repeat in his mind as the conviction on his face became more intense, ‘I just have to beat her once…’
Subaru quickly lunged forward, slashing his knife in a matter of directions. Elsa quickly blocked all of them and slashed the stomach of Subaru again.
As Subaru tried to stand up, Elsa lunged faster than before at him, his eyes widened in surprise at the speed of his opponent and he attempted to block the slash.
A metallic screech came out from the two knives colliding as they both held onto their knives while pushing forward towards the opponent. Subaru’s grip onto the knife quickly loosened from the force exerted by Elsa’s knife with Subaru’s knife getting knocked back soon after.
Subaru, without a weapon, resorted to using his fists, and tried to send a punch towards Elsa. However, his punch was intercepted by Elsa’s quick slashes and his fingers were cut off.
“Ahh!” A cry of pain came out of Subaru’s mouth as his fingers got cut off and Elsa used this momentary distraction to switch to a reverse grip and stab Subaru in the stomach.
“Guh!” The force behind the stab caused Subaru to crash into the wall with a painful thud with his head turning his gaze downwards.
“Let me ask you this,” Elsa said as she walked towards Subaru and crouched down to face him, “Where did you get your healing?”
Subaru looked at her with surprise at the seriousness in her voice before answering, “I’m not answering…” Subaru’s voice, being out of breath, wavered for a moment before continuing, “… that question…”
“I’m sure I killed the rest of the curse dolls… so who did you get your healing from?” Elsa asked with the same seriousness as before.
Subaru looked at her silently, with Elsa taking that silence as a sign that he would not speak of who gave him that power.
“Then let me do this~” Elsa switched to her ‘normal’ voice as she sent another slash towards Subaru, cutting parts of his arms and his stomach, “Will you answer now?”
Seeing Subaru continue to look at her silently, she continued, “I’ll take that answer as no then,” Elsa sighed deeply before sending another slash towards Subaru.
Then another.
And another.
And another.
And another.
And another.
And another.
And another.
And another.
‘Neck’ The sound of blood spurting out like a balloon disgusted Subaru.
‘Chest’ The knife rushed towards Subaru’s ribcage, shattering it and causing the bones to spread in his chest.
‘Fingers’ Subaru’s fingers were quickly cut off, as if they were small sausages.
‘Legs’ A handful of cuts were inflicted into Subaru, he stayed silent.
‘Neck’ Blood continued to spurt out despite the first gash being healed.
‘Stomach’ Subaru’s intestines started to leak out from his stomach.
‘Ears’ The sound of his blood spurting from his neck was no longer an issue.
‘Arms’ More cuts, yet Subaru stayed silent.
‘Stomach’ Some intestines leaking from Subaru’s stomach got cut.
‘Chest’ More parts of his ribcage were shattered, with the previous small bits moving, causing discomfort.
‘Neck’ Subaru’s esophagus had collapsed.
‘Fingers’ His fingers healed quickly only to get cut once again—
Elsa continued slashing. Subaru’s pained cries from each slash caused Elsa’s smile to widen each time.
When Elsa had been a kid in the everwinter land of Gusteko, she had constantly starved and had to fight other people for food and those who tried to take advantage of her weakness.
The only moment of respite that she had during the constant winter was when she had managed to procure some food to stop some of the starvation. However, that was until she killed a man.
The man tried to take advantage of her small body and malnutrition to commit a crime against her, and in an act of self defense, she had stabbed the man in the neck.
The warmth of the blood seeping from the wound off his neck enraptured her, which is what caused her to be a killer, and eventually being recruited as an assassin by Mama.
And now that Subaru had the same regeneration as her, he could bleed for her as much as she wants, and her ecstasy would never end.
‘Shit shit shit shit! Just Let me die let me die let me die!’ Subaru’s thoughts began repeating that mantra in his head as he continued to be cut, ‘How the hell do I disable my regeneration!?’

Elsa immediately noticed the healing that was previously stopping Subaru’s wounds from becoming too bad had stopped doing its job, ‘It seems that he really is just like me…’
“Goodbye, my dear… Say hello to the angels for me~” Elsa muttered to Subaru, as she licked some blood off his face.
Subaru felt his consciousness fading as the world around him turned black till there was nothing left. He was in peace as he realized that he was almost dead, and thought to himself:
‘Thank you… for letting me die…’
