Chapter Text

The house has quieted again.

The firepit outside has long since gone to embers, its smoky scent clinging to my hoodie. The laughter from earlier feels like it still echoes off the walls, soft and golden.

Everyone else has drifted to bed.

Billie passed out in the armchair halfway through a movie.

Tré conked out on the couch with an open bag of marshmallows in his lap.

Mike went home but left a note that just said: “Don’t forget how far you’ve come. Love you, kid.”

Adrienne kissed my forehead as I head upstairs, whispering, “Get some rest, sweetheart. You deserve peace.”

But I don’t sleep yet.

I sit cross-legged on my bed.

A journal open in front of me.

A pen in my hand.

The window is cracked just slightly, letting in cool air and the faint sound of crickets.

And here, in this still moment, it hits me.

I’m still here.

Not because the pain disappeared.

Not because everything is suddenly perfect.

But because something deep inside me whispered: Stay.

And I listened.

I look down at the page.

The pen hovers.

Then moves.

Not fast. Not messy.

Slow.

Intentional.

“Today, I chose to stay.
Not because it was easy.
Not because I wasn’t scared.
But because I remembered love.
I remembered the firelight and music and my mom braiding my hair even if it’s too short.
I remembered Billie’s pancakes. Mike’s stillness. Tré’s dumb jokes.
I remembered that I am more than a moment of darkness.
I don’t know what tomorrow holds.
But I know I want to be here to find out.”

I pause.

My hand trembles slightly.

Then I add one more line.

“I think this is what healing feels like.”

And I close the journal.

Climb into bed.

Pull the blanket over my shoulders.

And before my eyes drift closed, I whisper into the dark. “I’m staying.”

-------

Morning light slips in through the windows like something sacred.

The kind of light that feels like a second chance.

Tré and Mike have gone home.

The house is quiet again.

It’s just the three of us.

Billie is in the kitchen in his usual morning routine-messy hair, crumpled band tee, pouring coffee with one hand and burning toast with the other.

Adrienne is by the window, sipping her tea, reading the paper, eyes soft.

I’ve been sitting at the table for a while.

Quiet.

Not like before- not afraid.

Just… waiting for the right moment.

And now it’s here.

I set my mug down. Hands trembling a little. “I need to tell you something.”

They both look up immediately.

Not panicked.

Just present.

Adrienne sets her tea down. Billie pulls out the chair next to me and sits, brow furrowed but patient.

I take a deep breath.

My eyes sting a little already, but I don’t stop. “The night before yesterday… I had a dream. It wasn’t just a nightmare. It was… more than that.”

Billie leans forward, arms on the table. Adrienne reaches across, gently takes my hand.

I continue. “In the dream… I… I didn’t stay. I didn’t survive. And I had to watch what happened to you. To everyone. I saw you find me. I saw how it broke you.”

Billie’s eyes well instantly, jaw tightening.

Adrienne lets out a quiet breath, but her grip on my hand doesn’t waver.

I blink quickly, trying to stay composed. “I visited all of you… as a soul or something. I sat beside you two on the couch. I heard you say my name. I felt your love. And I couldn’t do anything. I couldn’t come back.”

A pause.

My voice cracks. “But when I woke up… when I realized it was a dream… I knew it wasn’t just some nightmare. It was the universe. Or something. Telling me what I almost lost. Telling me what I still have.”

Billie swipes at his face, his throat too tight to speak.

Adrienne just nods softly, her eyes shining.

“I know I’ve scared you before. I know I’ve been close. But I need you to know-after that dream- I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying. Because I choose to. Not because I’m supposed to. Not because I owe anyone. Because I want to. Because I love you.”

The room is silent.

Then Billie pushes his chair back with a harsh scrape and pulls me into his arms.

Not slow.

Fierce.

I hear his voice shaking against my shoulder. “Thank you for telling us. Thank you for choosing to stay. Thank you for coming back.”

Adrienne joins us both, folding in around us, pressing her hand to the back of my head like she did when I first came home.

No one says anything for a while.

Because nothing else needs to be said.

-------

The room is dark, soft with night.

I’m tucked into bed, Billie’s old hoodie draped over my shoulders. The house has gone quiet-just the gentle hum of the night through the cracked window and the low creak of the floor settling.

My phone glows in my hand.

I scroll.

I hadn’t looked in a while-not really looked. Not beyond quick glances. Not since before… everything.

And now?

I’m curious.

About what people know.

I open Instagram.

My notifications are still insane-likes, tags, reposts, DMs. I haven’t posted in weeks.

And even now, the comments don’t stop.

I start scrolling.

They do know about Riley.

There are fan pages who picked up on the split.

Some were kind.

Some confused.

Some angry at her.

Some heartbroken for me.

“Benny deserves better.”
“Still rooting for them. Always.”
“They were so in love. What happened?”
“I hope Benny’s okay. That’s all that matters.”

I scroll further.

I didn’t say anything publicly, but somehow… people knew.

About my silence.

About my absence.

About the shift.

Some picked up on my disappearance from the stage for a bit.

Some noticed I looked tired in old photos.

Some read between the lines.

And some?

Some just knew.

“Mental health isn’t linear. Benny, if you see this-we love you. We’re here.”
“Front Row Found Me helped me choose to stay. I hope Benny knows how many lives he’s changed.”
“I don’t care if they ever tour again, I just want Benny to be alive and okay.”
“He saved me. Now we save him.”

I blink hard.

The screen blurs.

They see me.

Not all the details.

Not the pain behind the dream.

But enough.

Enough to send love into the dark and trust that it reaches me.

I whisper to the ceiling, to myself, to them. “I’m still here.”

The phone is still on my chest.

My heart is pounding beneath it-slow and steady, but loud.

I stare at the ceiling one last time before sitting up, exhaling like I’m shedding an old skin.

No more silence.

I open Instagram.

My fingers hesitate over the “+” icon for a moment- not out of fear.

But out of reverence.

This isn’t just a post.

This is a declaration.

A promise.

A heartbeat that says, “I made it.”

I tap.

The photo I choose is simple.

Taken that morning by Adrienne without me knowing.

I’m sitting at the kitchen table, notebook open, Billie’s guitar nearby.

The light hits my face just right.

I’m smiling.

Not performing.

Just... me.

I write.

Not performatively.

Not poetically.

Just real.

i had a dream that i didn’t stay.
i watched what it would’ve done to the people i love.
i woke up crying.
i’m still here.
i stayed.
not because it was easy.
not because it magically got better.
but because i realized how deeply, wildly, quietly loved i am.
and i want to say to anyone out there who feels like disappearing-
i see you.
you matter.
and i promise:
there is more love waiting for you than you can imagine.
thank you for waiting for me.
i’m here now.
i’m staying.
-Benny

I stare at it for a long moment.

Then I hit post.

And in the silence that follows, it’s like the whole world exhales with me.

I close the app.

I sit for a moment, letting the stillness sink in-my message now drifting out into the world like a flare. I know it’ll come back. But curiosity still buzzes beneath my ribs, so I open a new tab.

Google.

I type my name.

Benny Armstrong

The page loads.

And yeah, they’ve been talking.

The headlines vary.

Some clickbait.

Some compassionate.

But the tone is different than it used to be.

They aren’t calling me “troubled.”

They aren’t speculating with cruel curiosity.

They’re watching.

They’re hoping.

“From Front Row to Center Stage: Benny Armstrong’s Voice is Saving Lives”

“A New Kind of Legacy: Green Day’s Next Generation is Redefining Punk with Heart”

“After Riley: Benny Armstrong’s Silence Raises Questions-and Compassion”

“Mental Health, Music, and the Power of Staying: Fans Rally Around Benny Armstrong”

I click through.

They reference the breakup with Riley, but it's not sensationalized.

More reflective.

Acknowledging my privacy.

Recognizing the shift in my public presence-my retreat, my quiet.

One article describes the fan movement that began around Front Row Found Me like a grassroots support network. There are quotes from fans who say I saved them.

Then, almost like the universe knew I was looking, a new headline updates right in front of me.

“‘I’m Still Here’: Benny Armstrong Breaks Silence With Emotional Post, Internet Responds With Overwhelming Support”

My throat tightens.

Not because I’m scared.

But because this… is what survival looks like.

Not glamorous.

Not perfect.

But true.

I flip back to Instagram.

The comments are pouring in.

Not all of them can be read in a scroll-but a few jump out:

“crying. thank you for saying this”
“you have no idea how many of us were waiting just to hear you say you’re still here”
“I stayed because of you. Now I’ll stay with you.”
“front row still found me and now you’ve found your way back too we love you.”
“Keep going. We’ve got you.”

I breathe in slowly.

I’m not a headline.

I’m not a hashtag.

I’m not a cautionary tale.

I’m Benny.

Still here.

Still breathing.

I smile.

A full, quiet smile.

But then- I see it.

A different name.

One I wasn’t expecting.

Riley.

Her profile picture is the same.

I haven’t looked at it in a long time.

My chest tightens slightly.

I almost scroll past- but I can’t.

I read it.

“I know I’m the last person you want to hear from.
But I saw this, and I couldn’t not say something.
You saved me, too. Even if I didn’t know how to hold you right back.
I’m so sorry for everything I broke.
I’m proud of you.
And I’m so, so glad you’re still here.”

I stare at the words for a long time.

They don’t sting like I thought they might.

They don’t undo my progress.

They don’t rewind the healing.

If anything, they sit there quietly in my chest.

Not asking to be forgiven.

Not asking for a return.

Just… offered.

I breathe in.

And out.

And I whisper to myself. “Me too.”
