Chapter Text
Kaito knew he wouldn't die here. That was a very silly idea indeed.
If Kaito didn’t swallow his pride and just try and call him now, as soon as Saguru found out he was missing he would activate the tracker that Kaito pretended he hadn't found sewn into his top. Saguru would show up like a white knight like he just so happened to be in the area. Kaito could probably come up with a plausible excuse for why he was wearing a KID suit so close to a KID heist, with a criminal in the hole to go with it. Probably.
The detective didn't care to unmask him anymore but Kaito still wouldn't give him the satisfaction of a solid answer. It was just a silly thing between them now.
You’re probably wondering about the use of ‘Saguru’, huh?
Kaito didn't know when he'd stopped calling Saguru insults, nor by his family name, and just called him by his name. It definitely happened sometime after he had shown up with the now redyed blue streak in his hair. A small hint that the stuck up rich boy was starting to loosen up.
He was starting to loosen up too.
Not at the current moment though, his body was starting to lock up. How long had they been in this hole for? It felt like years at this point, but it had probably only been ten minutes.
“You chose this life, Toichi. I- we… well sometimes people aren't given much of a choice or opportunity to say no.”
Kaito hadn’t given him an immediate response for that, but it seemed to echo around them. Of course, Snake was probably talking about someone else. Kaito knew plenty of people became criminals out of necessity, but he’d sounded oddly…passionate about the idea. Not like Kaito had anything else to focus on.
The criminal was seething, and if there was any room to really do it, Kaito was sure he would be pacing around like a caged animal.
Even if this was just a waiting game, and even if his body was killing him, well, what was the point of wasting an opportunity to gain more information from his enemy?
“You know, you could always give yourself up to the police. I’m sure a prison cell is more cushy than chasing your greatest enemy into holes.” Kaito smirked into his words, enjoying the grunt that Snake gave.
“I’d rather you be in one. I’d rather you be in the fucking ground."
Kaito rolled his eyes, even if Snake couldn’t see it. “I’ve never done anything wrong in my life.”
His father hadn’t done anything wrong! He’d just been trying to keep one damn thing away from these guys and they killed him-
“What about Hibiscus in Berlin?”
It had…gotten chilly in the hole all of a sudden. Snake’s tone was even chillier. Kaito suddenly felt…oddly afraid. Something primal, the deep innate fear prey feels cornered by a predator. Which was preposterous. He'd never been afraid of Snake before. A quiet “Huh?” was all he could mutter in his defense.
Snake's knuckles cracked as he clenched his hands. “I admit, Hibiscus wasn’t at his 100%, we told him that coming back onto the field so soon after popping out a kid was a bad idea, but he was always a stupid brat. Still didn’t give you the right, especially after what you already did to him.” Snake actually growled. “Thistle in Luterbach. Rudbeckia in Moraro! Violet in Saint-Viaud!!! I could go on, and you know what-” Snake stood up sharply and jabbed his foot at Kaito’s chest, close to his bad arm, making him wince. “I will!”
What was…all this. Names and places too. From before Kaito’s time as KID no doubt, but he felt frozen in place by Snake’s rant.
"Goddammit Toichi, this wouldn't have happened if you had just done your fucking job instead of thinking you need Pandora for yourself. Was it really worth faking your death? What you did to my coworkers?!” Snake’s snarl was venomous. “You literally had a god damned child and a wife and a picture perfect fucking life. Not that we knew you had a kid when we took the hit. Falcon never told me the kid existed when he came back to his seat at the show. What were you even thinkin’, settling down and having a kid?”
Kaito finally found his bite. “I’m sure I would have been perfectly content staying there if you hadn’t tried to blow me up!”
“Well, why did you never go back? Just pretend it was an elaborate prank? You knew after a year after that whole mess we weren’t going to target your so called family because not like you even gave a shit about them.” Snake punched the wall of the hole. “You know, I always wondered why you brought back the KID identity when Coreabu worked out so well for you all these years. I bet you just wanted theatrics in your life that Corbeau could never be caught dead doing- ha, dead, like you’re supposed to be, Toichi!”
Excuse Kaito for blue screening in this moment, there really was so much dropped on him in a moment. He just stared at Snake, mind whirling and somehow also stalling in the same moment, as the man panted, worked up and ready to continue-
