Heather Kasuga, Alejandro Burromuerto's wife, woke up to the sound of rain hitting her window. The feel of the pink silk sheets gave her a moment of relief before she felt the familiar emptiness beside her.
She stared mundanely at the ceiling, not really thinking about anything, when the phone rang. Heather considered letting it ring and not answering, but the continuous beeping quickly wore down her patience. She reluctantly took the phone, but spoke in a relatively cordial voice. "Yes?" A female voice (unnecessarily loud, Heather seemed to say) answered. "Heather? Oh dear, is that you?" She frowned. "Yes, who's speaking?" "I'm Sierra, Alejandro's cousin."
Heather didn't respond. Alejandro never mentioned having family other than his siblings, who hadn't spoken to him in years. Before she could question her, Sierra continued. "I have terrible news. It's Alejandro... He's passed away." "WHAT?" The phone almost slipped from her hands. "WHAT HAPPENED?" Only panicked murmurs came out of her mouth. "Calm down, calm down. I'm just as confused as you are. A local funeral home has taken care of everything; he's at his parents' house. Go there as soon as possible."
"But—" She couldn't finish when the supposed cousin hung up.
Heather didn't know what to do. On the one hand, was she going to believe someone she didn't even know existed two minutes ago? But she also couldn't ignore it; she hadn't seen her husband in three days; he was supposedly on a business trip.
She got out of bed, and while she was getting ready, the exact same thing was happening three other times.
Courtney Satella received a call while she was in her living room. She was knitting a jacket for her unborn child. She dropped it and placed her hand on her belly as she received the news.
Tyler Kenard received a call in Burromuerto's office. He was doing his best to organize his boss/lover's schedule and answered the phone nonchalantly. It was brief, of course; he hung up immediately and rushed to the scene.
And finally, Noah Mudaliar received a call in his own office. He quickly answered the phone, still reviewing the documents on his desk. "Yes, this is him... Yeah, I'm his lawyer." Then he paused. The same pause everyone else took before receiving the news.
There was silence, and after what seemed like an eternity, he finally said, "I'm on my way."
