Chapter 3: New beginnings, Same endings

Chapter Text

Gi-hun was going to die. It wasn’t surprising, nor was he regretting his decision. In fact, he finally felt at peace. Being tormented since 2020, he was more than glad to finally rest. The endless nights of hallucinations, sleep deprivation, and nightmares would finally come to an end.

He let his eyes wander, staring at the bottom of the pillar. Lee Myung-gi. His body was waiting for him at the bottom. His eyes were open, blank and glassy. Just staring. Once again, he had been the sole survivor. At least, one with a functioning mind. If it wasn’t for the baby, Gi-hun would’ve won yet another competition. And what was he to do with the money? That’s another 45.6 billion won, and he hadn’t even spent all of the money he won previously.

He walked over to the baby, picking her up and cradling her in his arms. Unfortunately, he was never a good father to his biological daughter. He tried, but he couldn’t support her. In these games, that didn’t matter. These girls put their trust in him, and he delivered what he could. Those were *his* girls, biologically or not, and he did everything in his power to try and protect them.

He stepped on the button in the middle of the platform, officially starting the final segment of the game. He would sacrifice himself, and the baby would live a debt and trauma free life — one that her parents fought for here.

He gently sat the baby down, giving her one last glance as tears welled up in his eyes. He may not have been her father, but he loved her like he was. And he always would. He slowly backed away, stopping at the edge of the platform. He looked up, looking at the VIP’s. Them in their gold plated masks and well designed suits. It was disgusting what they would do. Bet on the unfortunate like they were horses racing on a track.

He closed his eyes, allowing himself to fall back. As he did, time felt slower as he was falling. In his last moments, he thought of everyone he had met in his lifetime. All of the people he had watched die throughout the years. Good friends like Ali and Jung-bae. His girls, like Jun-hee and Sae-byeok. The friendships, the teamwork, it all started to flow back to him.

As he hit the ground, there was one thing on his mind. A thought that would stick with him, even through death. Sang-woo. Now, he’s come to peace with it. What happened wasn’t his fault. All of those nights he spent suffering, blaming himself. He offered the chance to leave together. Sang-woo was just himself.

And Sang-woo was stubborn,
And Sang-woo was a hidden weapon — his intelligence and such, and then he considered it;

Sang-woo wanted to be dead,
and honestly? So did he.
