Chapter 24
(Gally)
Okay, so first, we’ve got Thomas, right? The crazy Greeny who runs the Maze and acts like he owns the place. Then we have two new Greenys come up, whom both know Newt, and no one but me seems to care! Not one other person. Shouldn’t we be worried? Everything’s about to change—I can feel it.
Alby’s getting worse and everyone (Thomas in the lead.) don’t want to banish him. Look, I like Alby too, but is it really better to just let him suffer, then to let him die, so as to be at peace? And I understand that no one wants to banish their friends, I get that it ’s hard to let them go, but it’s what needs to be done.
Eh, but they can follow that Thomas all they like, making more problems than we can take, just leave me out of it.
But even though I don’t want to help them I do need answers, “Mary,” I ask, a few of the other guys are here too, it’s hard to be alone sometimes.
“Yeah, Gally, what’s up?” She smiles.
“What are you and Newt?” I ask.
“What?”
“Are you twi dating?” Everyone else leans in to hear too.
“We were. I don’t think he remembers me though…” she pauses, “Oh wait! He does!!” She says happily.
“What?” We all say, Newt’s been hiding something like that from us?!
“Yeah, a bit, a very little bit, he said anyway.” She nods.
“Did he say what he remembers?” I ask, leaning in.
“No, he didn’t seem to wanna talk about it.” She shrugs.
“So,” says Winston, “You guys were together?”
“Yeah.” She says as if she had to wait in line, and she’s proud she got a turn with him before he forgot everything.
“Ah,” Winston smiles, “Hey, something about Newt now—I don’t know about before—but, now even when he doesn’t know you that well, he likes hugs.” Everyone chuckles, and agrees.
“Really?” She says hopefully.
Yeah, I think, cuz’ we’d know that, a bunch of guys often give each other hugs. Pfft! As if.
“Yeah.” Says Winston.
“Okay,” she says, smiling.
“And,” Winston continues, “He’s been kinda down lately, so, you should give him a hug, it’ll make him feel better.”
“Oh,” Mary says, “Okay.” Everyone chuckles.
“Hey Mary,” Winston adds, “You didn’t hear it from me. ‘Kay?”
“‘Kay!” She smiles and waves, “I’ll try it, thanks!” With that she jogs away.
