Aegis Maxima!

Chapter 4: Aegis Maxima!

Notes:

A/N:
The word Aegis is Greek for “shield,” with roots in mythology. Since most spells are Latin-based, I thought it was a fitting blend. What do you think? Leave a review if you enjoyed the chapter!

 Chapter 4: Aegis Maxima!

Present Day

Ron was determined, and nothing anyone said could change his mind.

He straightened his shoulders, looked directly at his sister-in-law, and said, “Let’s try a control test. I want you three to intentionally broadcast your Veela magic toward me.”

There was a pause. Mr. Delacour, standing beside Bill, stepped forward and spoke with quiet authority.
“Let zee young man do as he wishes, mes amis. After all, eet eez a matter of honor for him. I, for one, understand his predicament.”

Fleur shot Hermione an apologetic look, then turned to her mother and sister. With a subtle nod, the three witches faced Ron, smiling brightly as they consciously projected their Veela magic toward him.

As expected, Ron’s eyes glazed over. He stared at Fleur in a hypnotic trance — but then, his body language shifted. His gaze sharpened from dazed to predatory. Without warning, he broke into a run, charging toward the three witches.

Bill moved instinctively to intercept him, but Mr. Delacour was faster. With a swift flick of his wand, he stunned Ron mid-stride.

A Few Minutes Later

Ron sat up groggily, ears burning red with embarrassment. But his resolve hadn’t wavered.

“Well… that’s the control,” he muttered. “So it obviously works. Now let’s see if the next step does.”

He glanced at Hermione, and though no words were exchanged, the look between them spoke volumes. Then, as if preparing for battle, Ron turned away and locked eyes with Gabrielle. He saw the flicker of fear in her expression — and hated himself for being the cause of it.

Hadn’t he and his friends shed blood on the hallowed grounds of Hogwarts to eliminate that fear?

Fleur leaned in and whispered something soothing to her sister in French, calming her.

Mr. Delacour, noticing Ron’s stricken expression, clapped him gently on the back.
“Worry not, young man. Eet is good for ma fille Gabrielle to understand zee negative effects her Veela magic can have on those around her. She is young, but growing fast into a beautiful woman. And while she has been slow to grasp this truth, I would rather she learn it in a place where we can control the outcome.”

Ron’s posture relaxed slightly. The words settled something inside him.

With his mood lightened, he offered Gabrielle an apologetic smile, then raised his wand and pointed it at himself.

He shouted, “Aegis Maxima!”

A golden-orange light burst from the tip of his wand, striking his chest and face. His skin shimmered with a soft, ethereal blue glow.

Ron turned to Fleur and the others, grinning.
“Alright, ladies — let’s see whether this works or not. And let’s pray it doesn’t blow up in my face, yeah?”

This piece originally began as a one-shot called “Aegis Maxima" on FF.net (Under the same username) and has been reshaped and expanded for AO3. The details may have slightly changed to fit my current writing style, but the heart is still the old me.
